I saw Kiri sing this role live at the Met several times and she was amazing. This was not an "off night" it was a typical very slightly imperfect live performance by a great artist. The fact that Kiri does not have an easy high D or perfect coloratura is because of her voice type which is what this role calls for. A dark soprano who can sing this with character not a light coloratura with an easy high D.

You know, it is very common for people who perform this role to hold out that last D, but I have the sheet music in front of me, and it is actually written as an 8th note. This version is just true to the music.

amen! Also, they had Kiri sing different german text on the Friszka and she took the popular cut in the middle- perhaps, due to the nature of this special performance & watching celebrity audience. = ) (I'm not negatively critizing this performance, singer, etc...just making the observation.) I'm studying this aria currently and Kiri is ALWAYS AMAZING and, I'm sure ,works soo very hard on everything she does! Awe-inspiring! Thanks for posting!

Yes, I think the only person I've seen not take the cut in the middle of the aria is Joan Sutherland. Good luck in your studies, btw! :) This aria is a beast, I worked on it myself this past semester.

Vitella- we get the point, you don't like it. But you don't have to be a complete bas***d about it. Yes the high D was not as present as it is in other recordings but I personally find it refreshing to hear it in a different light. It makes it sound slightly more playful. Also, I have no idea what any of you are talking about, calling this mediocre- this is a wonderful performance. Kiri did a marvellous job of tackling that gorgeous, spiralling melody.

I so disagree with you. Kiri Te Kanawa was only one of the greatest sopranos of the late 20th century. She sounds wonderful to me. Afterall, it's a live performance. Listen to her when she sings Mozart--true perfection!

I don't know. I wrote that comment 6 years ago. I love her in other Strauss roles, but it sounded to me as though she was pushing in the lower range on this recording. But I love her as the Marschallin, which is bigger. Maybe it's just preference.

WHATEVER Kiri!

Why is the role too big for her? She has a big enough voice to sing over the orchestra in Strauss' lovely operetta

This part doesn't do justice to Ms. Te Kanawa's voice. The role is just too big for her, and the strain is evident. The staging is pretty, at least. And she looks nice.

I think she's so over-rated. This rendition was so mediocre. Maybe she was under the weather. Still, that last high D, or lack thereof, rather, was so embarrassing. I'll have to listen to Renee Fleming to make up for this.
