Ahhhhhhh . . . his greatest work. I have a wonderful CD set of a performance by Karajan and the Vienna State Opera from New Year's Eve, 1960. The cast is superb, but I especially like the Orlofsky, Gerhard Stolze, who had the perfect voice for the role. Josef Meinrad was a glorious, drunken, exuberant, hysterical Frosch - I'd say most of his lines were ad-libbed. The audience must have been imbibing champagne all through the performance, because they were wild! I'm not sure any recorded performance could ever top that one!
