Die Hard With a Vengeance: One of the Best Bruce Willis Movies?

Bruce Willis has been in the news a lot lately, with his tragic Aphasia diagnosis and then the ghoulish news that he told his likeness to a Deepfake company (which has since been debunked). In this episode of Revisited, we take a look back at one of his greatest action movies, the third Die Hard film, Die Hard With a Vengeance. While John McTiernan’s Die Hard is an unassailable classic (and Die Hard 2: Die Harder is pretty nifty, too), the third film, Die Hard With a Vengeance, is pretty damn close to being as good as the original. It helps that McTiernan returned to direct this kick-ass instalment, which takes the action to the streets of NYC and pairs Willis’ John McClane up with Samuel L. Jackson’s Zeus Carver.
While the choice to make the bad guy (played by Jeremy Irons) the other of Hans Gruber was a little silly, otherwise, this is pretty much a perfect action movie. In this episode of Revisited (written, narrated and edited by E.J. Tangonan), we dig into what makes it so good while also exploring a darker, alternative ending that would have potentially ended the series (for a time) on a dark note.
Where do you place Die Hard With a Vengeance in the pantheon of Die Hard flicks? Let us know in the comments!

The other good part of this film is it makes John McClain an everyman action hero surrounded by people who are willing to do the same. The bomb technician stays behind when he realises there's still kids in the building. The male & female detectives stay to try and rescue the kids. Even the Captain is on the ground trying to rally the squad to help. They all could be a squad of John McClains, we just happen to know Willis' character from previous movies. Sometimes I just like watching competent people be good at their job in movies.

Die Hard With a Vengeance is not only my favourite Die Hard film, it's one of my favourite action films. The hot and gritty New York setting, the bait and switch plot, the buddy cop relationship. Everything about it (except for the soft ending) is damn near perfect. I can look at a map of New York and follow where John McClain ventured. Sometimes I watch it just to pretend I'm in New York and walking around Battery Park and Wall Street. Fun film.

I grew up to watch Bruce Willis, Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Mel Gibson. I love 80s to 90s action movies especially Die Hard series. I rewatch Die Hard 1 to 4 every year. I don't count Die Hard 5 because it suck. The first one is classic. 2 is okay. 3 and 4 for me are so underrated. No one talk about how good in 3 and 4.

One of my favorite moments in the movie was when John hitches a ride with a construction worker with an encyclopedia for a brain and a relentless energy to share knowledge. It always makes me smile when John casually drops the question of who the 21st President was and the worker, without skipping a heartbeat (thanks to amazing editing), says "Chester A. Arthur" then quickly and rhetorically asks if John was aware of Arthur's professional tenure in New York. My take away from that scene and character was the epitome of never judging a book by its cover as genius and talent can exist anywhere regardless of a person's demeanor, socioeconomic background or their profession. And yes, this is far and away the best sequel to one of the best action movies ever made. I would also love to see how they shot the scene of John and Zeus driving through Central Park. Sam Jackson looked to be legitimately holding on for dear life at certain moments. Love this movie!! 😀

One problem with the alternate ending: The rocket launcher (an M72 LAW) is a hollow tube that shoots a projectile out of the front and a bunch of flames and plastic chips out of the back. This results in a "caution zone" of 40m behind the weapon and a 15m "danger zone" behind the weapon. They both would have died, or be seriously injured.

Saw the first one sometime in late '88 or early '89 and it was just one of those fun action movies like Indiana Jones meets Bond but far more realistic. This movie, I remember renting some time in '95/96 and then I saw a TV version of it on Fox I believe where they had to make the message on McClane's boards in Harlem less offensive by doing it digitally. I never knew they actually had Willis standing out there with just two blank whiteboards on and added the message in post, which surprised me. For 1995, that was good digital work for such a thing. I own this and the first movie, the second one I can take or leave. I've never seen the other "sequels" as they don't matter to me. The interplay between Jackson and Willis is on fire. You really believe what is going on and what they are saying and having conversations and arguments about. Movie isn't perfect due especially with the ending but it stands up for sure.

Not only do I love the DH trilogy... I remember my dad renting this one weekend and we had two videos and I would tape films I would like. I had DH1&2 taped off the telly...ive vivid memories of watching DH2 on RTE2(irish channel) late at night in 93-94 a few days after Christmas... I stayed up pausing and starting recording when the ads were on... Anyway anyone remember the Die Hard Trilogy game? I had it for the PlayStation (and a game called Die Hard Arcade for the Saturn, but that was basically Streets of Rage 3d in a skyscraper) It was 3 games. A 2.5d overhead shooter in a skyscraper for DH... A light gun game rail shooter, like Time Crisis for DH2... And a driving game for DH3... You'd have to rocket it around the city to locations to get to bombs within the time limit. There were other mechanics too but it was unbelievably frustrating... You'd have to memorise every route and enemy, obstacle etc and you'd barely have a second left sometimes... The games definitely needed more polish, and maybe be split onto more discs to give them more depth and detail, but for the time it was amazing, novel idea and it took the best elements from each film and it was really fun to play. I never bother with 4&5, to me the ending of the series is with this film. There used to be a video of Kevin Smith talking about working on DH with Bruce and writing the 'warlock' scene and having 'Bruce Willis chicken' and tasty cake and stuff from new Jersey... He talks about Bruce having such a love for the franchise and winning a battle with the studio. While dh2 was a repeat of the first, and yea it was really well done, I am really pleased that this takes a completely different turn, but still FEELS like Die Hard. Bruce and Sam work amazingly well together and yeah it's Riggs and Murtagh at their best. I love Jeremy Irons(only last year I drove past her s big pink castle in Ireland) in anything... Hes easily my favourite Alfred... Definitely a good follow up to Rickman.

Overrated garbage and the Amazing score by Michael Kamen's that shines in 1 and 2 falls flat and feels forced in this lesser film. The score doesn't fit the scenes and feels forced esp because there is very little suspense when compared to its big brothers DIE HARD 1n2. All one can think about is how much more fitting the score works in the original . Its a lesser movie with some ok bad guys terrible visual effects that give it a b movie feel and underwhelming scenes with little to no sense of menace or danger that even one of the best action scores cannot save. When the incessant when jonnhy comes marching in was never a good theme and has aged as bad as the film itself. If it had some other title not associated with DIE HARD it would have actually been slightly better. For an unofficial DIE HARDISH sequel watch the LAST BOY SCOUT instead and having the great MIchael Kamen do the score makes you imagine even more that it could be an alternate time line Die Hard sequel.

A well-known nursery rhyme states, "As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Every wife had seven sacks, every sack had seven cats, every cat had seven kitts. Kitts, cats, sacks, wives, how many were going to St. Ives?"

"A more realistic physique" Sorry, what does that mean? Stellone and Schwarzneggers bodies are real. What people should say is a more "average" physique. Sorry, its always caused severe eye rolling. Otherwise, good vid.

Yeah I have Die Hard, Die Hard 2, and Die Hard with a Vengence on DVD because they are still some of my favorite Bruce Willis action films. I highly recommend checking out his other early action films that go underappreciated like Last Man Standing which is a action film but set more in the early days of the Industrial revolution in the US kinda of like Peeky Blinders. There is also good comedy with action in The Last Boy Scout which has great comedy as well as action. There are many of Bruce Willis early action films that go seriously underappreciated but my personally favorite is this one for various reasons. I like that you saw his character that showed how he was just this cop from NYC who was just trying to do his job to protect the innocent. This showed more acting skill from Samuel L Jackson which people don't remember it but he was in comedies for years. It was him staring in Pulp Fiction and this that changed that for him. Now he has been in multiple action films but I still remember when he would just appear in a comedy with Eddie Murphy like he does in Coming To America. Nobody seems to remember how he did spoofs of action films like National Lapoon's Loaded Weapon which is also in my personal collection. It's crazy how much as changed since this film was released and this was also the most thought provoking of the Die Hard films with the idea of puzzles being used by the antagonist. This is definitely one if not the best from his movie career from the past several decades. I still remember when people thought he couldn't cut it in action because he had only been in the show Moonlighting where the character he played was nothing like John McClane.

Die hard 3 is great. I just always hated how they wasted jeremy irons’ good villain role. Simon gruber dies in a somewhat generic and forced way. Which i Think is so anticlimactic. That is the only thing bugging me about the film though.

It's better than the alternate ending, his crew would have escaped, and, John McClane would have turned into a psychopath, I almost thought they'd escaped until the bottle sank his whole plan.

I didn't like that helicopter ending either. It felt like a video game final boss ending scene than a movie. The alternate ending was way better in my opinion with the backwards RPG scene.

What a great video! Cheers boys, really enjoyable! I love the Die Hard films but this is probably my favourite by an inch. The ending was disappointing though, we didn’t really get to see the smile wiped of the bad guys face like with Alan Rickman.

Hensleigh's script is so much better than the film. It actually explains the "water jug" scene and how the solve the riddle. Unlike the film, that just cuts to the answer. Also, Hensleigh is a good screenwriter so his script is a fun read with a more entertaining last act.

7:11 - Technically, even they didn't share any scenes together, Willis and Jackson first worked together in 1993's National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1. Then 94's Pulp Fiction, then 95's Die Hard with a Vengeance, then 2000's Unbreakable, then 2016's Split (no scenes together) and finally 2019's Glass.
