In 1972 I drove a Ford Cortina 2500cc V6 towing a Sprite Muskateer caravan down into the Hel. This was done in conjunction with Caravan Magazine and Ford Motor Company. The Cortina p/u was fitted with a automatic transmission. This was in a time when caravans were not allowed onto Prince Alfred Pass. The road to the Hel was considered only suitable for 4 x 4 vehicles. The hairpins were so tight that at one stage the vehicle and caravan were in a full Jackie situation with the left front wheel centimeters from the edge of a sheer downslope. When driving past the houses we only saw figures peering at us through partially opened curtains. A visit to the cemetery highlighted the names of only a few families who had settled ther. The trip up was in complete contrast to the one down with continuous wheels pin from the loose shale.

Thank you so much for your personal account Kingsley. It’s a privilege to hear of what it was like to make the journey back in the day.

Just become a patreon... love your work. I'm doing a lot of these as well through Africa in the last 15 years. Have 4 weeks in November exploring SA.

I’ve heard about them but didn’t encounter any this trip, where I live seagulls are the problem🤣 They HATE drones 😂
