Yes, that is exactly the problem we face in Germany right now. Many of our East-German fellow citizens think we conquered and humiliated them. I think they are partly right. What the "Treuhand" did was just brutal ... I think our "failure" to ease the transformation fuels the far right movement in Eastern Germany today ...

Honecker was a true believer, for him the Marxist-Leninist ideology was like a religion. Mikhail Gorbachev however was a reformist, who wanted to reforms the stagnating Soviet economy by introducing capitalist elements. He was in favor of Chinese state-capitalism under a single party state originally in 1985. But his reforms also led to a democratization process and this was exploited by anticommunists like Boris Yeltsin, who abandoned the Marxist-Leninist facade and embraced austerity capitalism by 1990. Erich Honecker was a orthodox believer in the system of his German Democratic Republic. He failed to see how far he and the SED had distant themselves from the actual working class. Their home was a closed compound with western household products and Swedish cars, the East-Germans called Honecker's compound: Volvograd!

The USSR would have died early if it allowed itself to not have the structures to defend itself. I would reference Engel's "On Authority" (something Marx himself supported as a publication) and The State & Revolution by Lenin. At least to just completely understand the view of Marxist Leninists. I will also recommend some videos I could scrounge up on the subject. Since a video introduction may be easier to absorb. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHiwaWxpmJaLbtU kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXTZYWecZbeLnMU I also think watching and reading things by an author Micheal Parenti may be illuminating, mainly the book "Black Shirts and Reds"

Yes, but that shows you that the CPSU wasn't as orthodox and homogenous in thought as the West said. In the first year of the Russian Federation and its unrestricted capitalist measures the GDP fell 1/3 and by 1999 it had fallen 40%, that means it wasn't about economic reasons like the USA says; the USSR fell when the party couldn't get behind a leader in 1991 and the different republics started leaving the Union. The economic policies of the Soviet Union were already towards capitalism in 1986 though, what actually fell in that year was the Supra-State of the Union, leaving behind its successor Republics; the plan back then was to reconfigurate the Soviet Union in a State called Union of Sovereign States. Of course the main reason was that some Soviet politicians wanted to gain control of the infrastructure which they did in the middle and late 90s and now basically control Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Armenia (these countries didn't become nice democratic and free after all, they are still very authoritarian)
