This theme of dancing with death is protrayed masterfully. Elisabeth dances with him, but she won't ever let him lead. She wants to dance the way she chooses. She wants to lead herself. Death can grab and drag her, but she freed herself from him. She faced him, head held high. And then you get Rudolf, who's totally taken by Death, powerless and unwilling to fight him. Death even controls him like a puppet, he leads, he pushes him across the entire stage with ease. Total control, domination even. I love this so much. The way they showed Death's utter power in this scene is astounding.

Many people critized, that he (Mate Kamaras) acted too much like a man, for Elisabeths death was originally portrayed without a sex. But the funny thing is for me he was the most inhuman in his portrayal, for death is no human creature. Let me explain: My wish when I go to the theatre is that each character makes me forget it is acting I see. So, I have seen MANY MEN in this role: Uwe Kröger, Mark Seibert etc. But I only saw ONE DEATH.

Forgot to mention. Of all the Rudolf's I've seen, Fritz Schmidt is definitely the best, voice and looks. And I absolutely love the way he runs away at the end of the scene, pelting offstage like a gawky little boy.

Etwas späte Antwort, aber ich denke nicht, dass der Tod und Rudolf einander lieben. Ich denke, dass der Tod vielmehr hofft (nachdem Rudolf den „Kuss des Todes“ abgelehnt hat, und das mehrfach), dass Elisabeth freiwillig in den Tod geht. Ich glaube, dass der Tod durch seine Aktionen definitiv dafür sorgen will, dass Elisabeth sich umbringt, da es ihm nicht gelungen ist bringt er Lucheni auf die Idee sie zu töten. Rudolf war meiner Meinung nach nur Mittel zum Zweck.

Der verführerische Tod, jaja... dieses Lied treibt mir jedes Mal von Neuem die Tränen in die Augen. An so manchen Tagen lass ich mich fast wie Rudolf in die süße Versuchung des Entkommens, des dem undankbaren Leben aus dem Weg Gehens locken. Zumindest in Gedanken. Es ist ein Meisterwerk. It's my understanding that Death (who really is Elisabeth's Death) is angry at Elisabeth for rejecting him time and time again so he decides to hurt her by taking her son; notice how he just carelessly tosses Rudolf aside after Rudolf shoots himself in The Mayerling scene. He just wants to refuse Elisbeth just like she refused him earlier when she finally asks to die in her grief over Rudolf in the cemetary, which he does. At least that is one way to look at it. :)

Ich muss sagen, mir gefällt diese Interpretation wirklich sehr sehr gut. Beide Darsteller bringen ihre Rolle und die Gefühle sehr gut rüber! Ich bin absolut begeistert von dem leicht rauen in der Stimme des Todes und davon wie er das "r" immer ein wenig rollt. I have to say, Máté definitely isn't the only Tod out there, but he's clearly my favourite. I love how he worked with the idea of death being this unstoppable force of nature, and his Tod sure does feel like one. Also, the chemistry between him and Maya is something entirely different. It takes the show to a whole new level. (I'm talking about the Vienna version, I don't know anything about the Japanese one.) Mark's performance simply couldn't match that explosive, dangerous, thrilling energy Máté brought on stage. To be honest, I sometimes found him straight up boring. His acting was often lacking, and his voice sounded average next to Annemieke's, which made their duets really hard to enjoy. She is, no doubt, both an amazing singer and actress. In my opinion, Maya and her gave a truly special feel to the role that none of the others could replicate. But sadly, Mark couldn't always live up to her, and the two of them just weren't a good pair. Uwe certainly had his own take on the character, one that wasn't at all enjoyable to me. While Pia was a remarkably good cast for the role, the same could not be said for Uwe. In fact, Pia's presence on stage was simply so much stronger that he often came across as awkward and overlooked, sometimes straight up pathetic, despite being a main character. Usually both his voice and acting were just weak in comparison. This ill-matched pair's chemistry clearly did not work.

I also still very much like the happy coincidence that Maté is Hungarian... A nice subtle touch if you consider the point of history in the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. (I have no idea if his nationality had any role in his casting, and I don't think it should - he's absolutely superb in every way. I just thought it's interesting)

I love how Mate as Tod is seductive, cold mischievous, and sometimes fragile when he gets rejected by Elisabeth. I think Uwe’s Tod is more of a symbolism than an actual actor/character physically present in the show. But Mate’s version is playful, passionate and very much the bad boy first ever falling in love and gets super possessive and attentive, especially when he was staring at Elisabeth. Mark is kinda in between Uwe and Mate. He seems to be more mature and steady than Mate’s Tod. I do hope Mate will play Death again. However, he seems to be playing death for so long and doesnt take many new roles recently. I don’t know if he’s still into musicals but I imagine playing the same role for almost 20 years can get you a bit bored. (Edited typos)

@@alierchiang unfortunately máté has a vocal condition which means that he can't strain his voice at all (he was apparently practically mute for a year after damaging his voice), so i think it's unlikely he will ever take a musical role again - he's still doing concerts though!

Ahhh. I myself am torn between the two versions- Both are very good, and it SAYS something about translator talents when they translate a musical into another language and it turns out well. The prince certainly acts more manly in the takurazuka version. (Which also says something) I'm a bit amused that girl-on-girl is AOK, but the boys musn't touch. Death is intended to be a bit gender neutral anyway- In a later scene, when there are multiple of him, half the actors are females.

I think it's a metaphor for how suicidal people see the world; as completely hopeless and how the only way to relieve the pain is to take their own life. A different take on the seduction scene to be sure.
