The best performance ever. Finally a reasonable, not "" traditional"" tempo. Pape's vibrato is absolutely exquisite. He and Hans Peter König should give lessons all over opera houses. There are only very few singers who are able to control their vibrato - something quite normally required for instrument players. Almost every singer - including any "star" - has one kind of vibrato that just "happens" to them. Without control of how fast, wide or regular it is. Pape is a perfection ❤

Rene Pape is such a great baritone. So rich and powerful and commanding. I wish he had been the package deal with Renee Fleming for her performances of Thais instead of Thomas Hampson.

His voice is way too light for sarastro. Listen to martti talvela, mihaly szekely, kurt moll singing this aria their voices are much heavier and carry more weight to them.

No doubt he is a good singer, but he is not a bass profondo, and to sing Sarastro, it takes a low bass. Most of the aria it is too baritonal and the low ending forced, not calm and relaxed as it should be.

B. K. Moll, K. Boehme, M. Talvela, F. Crass, L. Lemcke]!

I don't necessarily agree that he is a baritone. I think he's just a true bass who needs to work on his technique. In this performance, his voice was probably just in a bad mood and that is why his low notes in this video are somewhat constricted and sound similar to fry.

@@bradycall1889 unfortunately, in my opinion, this is the standard of Rene Pappe; not a bad mood.

@@bradycall1889 unfortunately not "yet" he is almost 60. This a good performance of his, but still, he does not convey the confidence the role demands, especially in the beginning with the low notes being simply touched upon: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYHGn36hf61meLM
