The Yeti attack at the opening was added to the film to explain why Luke suddenly had facial scars. Between the first and second movies, Mark Hammil had a car accident that left him with deep facial injuries that even makeup couldn't adequately hide.

@@BurttheBard Thanks for the info. I did some reading up on it and see that it is controversial and unlikely to ever be definitively decided one way or the other. The question is, did the writer of the first script include the scene because of the accident or not. Those who say it was not pointed out that the scars were not that severe, that Mark Hamill had made a movie since the accident where he played a teenager, and that the director is very unlikely to have requested a rewrite after seeing the scars himself nearly two years after the accident. This sounds reasonable, but I am on the other side. I believe that the scene WAS written to account for the scars, but that it was not added at the request of the director. the writer was aware of the scars when the script was first written, a full year before filming began. the injuries to Mr. Hamill's face were not completely healed, so no one knew if they would pose a problem or not. The prudent thing to do was to write in the explanatory scene from the very first draft so that, if needed, it would flow smoothly and not look shoehorned in after the fact. It would be far easier to remove it later, than to insert it on the fly. Unfortunately, the writer died a month after completing the work, so there is no way to know the truth of the matter now.
@alucard624
@alucard624 2 жыл бұрын
I believe Hamill confirmed that was always in the script but his real life scars definitely helped sell the attack better. His accident certainly aged him quite a bit between Episode IV and V though.

The little pod that Vader sits in was his Meditation Chamber. It was a life support pod that allowed him to survive for extended periods without the helmet and mask of his suit which regulated his breathing. Once you watch Episodes 1-3, you will get the full backstory of Vader and understand how he became who he is and why The thing that Luke was in is called a Bacta Tank. In the Star Wars universe, being placed in the tank was a way to accelerate healing from injuries. Almost like being put on some form of Life Support.

22:45 Fun fact, that dark side cave on Dagobah is the entire reason Yoda's there. It's powerful enough in the dark side of the Force that Yoda's presence as a focus of the light side of the Force causes the Force signature of the two to cancel each other out as long as he lives nearby. It's how he kept the Emperor from ever sensing out his presence the past 25 years.

I really like that you noted how important the humor is in this movie. As you said, it ads balance to the pacing of the story. One of the things I found lacking in both the prequels and the sequels in the trilogy was that the humor when there was any seemed really scripted and stiff. When you said you loved the insults even though they are corny, that is it in a nutshell. They sound like insults your friends say. There is no time to come up with something very witty, so you make up a name like "goldenrod".

Not So Fun Fact: Much of the damage to Luke's face in the beginning of the movie was from a car accident Mark Hamil was involved in, in real life.
@GingerNipples
@GingerNipples 2 жыл бұрын
Even more fun fact, that's a widely spread but false rumor. Everyone who worked one the movie and is asked about this denies it. Mark Hamill himself appeared in another movie filmed after his accident but before Empire called Corvette Summer and he did not have any damage to his face in that movie. Mark Hamill himself has also said as far as he knows he didn't receive any permanent injuries from his accident. George Lucas was also asked about this and said he made no changes to the movie due to Hamill's accident and the classic rumor the wampa attack being added because of his accident, George also denied because he said his first ever draft of Empire included the wampa attack and was written before Mark Hamill's accident. The producer, I believe of Empire was also asked and said all the scarring on Mark Hamill's face in this movie was done with makeup. That whole Mark Hamill's scars being real and the movie being written around his accident are all just an urban legend.

The cave shows Luke his own dark side. It shows him what he could become. The darkest Jedi (later canonically known as a Sith) he knows of is Darth Vader so that is what he sees. Yoda says 'Only what you take with you.' when he asks what is in there. The dark reflection doesn't draw a lightsaber until Luke does. And of course the face reveal shows, this is what you could turn into if you fall to darkness. He actually fails at the cave because he didn't need to fear it and fight it, he needed to see and accept his dark side so he could better avoid falling. The best Star Wars movie, bar none.

It's a parody of Yoda's scenes by the channel Bad Lip Reading. 20:07 It's called a mynock. One of the few creatures, along with the space slug you see later in the movie, that can survive in vacuum. Space is its own ecosystem in Star Wars. 30:18 Those were Ugnaughts. They're sentient, there's an English speaking one in the TV series The Mandalorian. These ones are employees of Cloud City. 38:45 There's also a voiceover switch parody where Donald Trump's voice is played instead of Darth Vader's lines. Just discovered your channel. Great reaction! I don't know if you've watched Episode 6: Return of the Jedi yet, but if you haven't, there's an alternate way of watching these movies called the "machete order" which involves skipping RotJ and going straight to Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, then Ep. 2: Attack of the Clones, then Ep. 3: Revenge of the Sith, and then finish with RotJ since it's the big finale of the first 6 movies. If you have watched RotJ already and just haven't posted it yet, then you can move on to 1-3. After that, there are other ways of watching the saga. You could go to Episodes 7-9, or you could watch the two stand-alone movies: Solo and Rogue One, both of which take place between Episodes 3 and 4. Or you could watch the animated shows like Clone Wars or Rebels, or you can start watching The Mandalorian. There are so many options. Here's a list of everything in chronological order and you can decide what order to watch them. Ep. 1: The Phantom Menace Ep. 2: Attack of the Clones The Clone Wars animated movie The Clone Wars animated series Seasons 1-7 Ep. 3: Revenge of the Sith The Bad Batch animated series Seasons 1-2 (Season 2 is not out yet but should be by the time you get this far.) Obi-Wan Kenobi (new series coming out on Disney Plus on May 25th) Solo: A Star Wars Story Andor (new series coming out later this year, featuring a character from Rogue One) Rebels animated series Seasons 1-4 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Ep. 4: A New Hope Ep. 5: Empire Strikes Back Ep. 6: Return of the Jedi The Mandalorian live action series Seasons 1-2 The Book of Boba Fett live action series Season 1 (not sure if there will be a Season 2 as of this time) The Mandalorian Season 3 Ahsoka Season 1 (new series coming out in 2023 most likely) Resistance animated series Season 1 Ep. 7: The Force Awakens Resistance Season 2 Ep. 8: The Last Jedi Ep. 9: The Rise of Skywalker And then you start all over, re-watching everything again and again and again for the rest of your life. 21:54 Every individual who used the force especially the Jedi have a choice in how they use it. For there is only one force but they are only two ways to use it. For those two who seek power that the force provides, will ultimately lead them down the path of the dark side of the force. The dark side is driven by once passions and emotions with anger being the strongest, and guided by fear. So that quote that Master Yoda spoke to Luke concerning his fear, that you thought was dark in context he was only speaking the truth... The seductive nature of the dark side of the force is driven by your anger. And there are a lot of things that will drive people to get angry, such as an injustice. The Jedi are trained to be passive when using the force, detaching themselves from all their emotions so to withstand their lust for the dark side.....

@@jeremyfrost2636 True, but the crayon is supposed to be the color "of" a goldenrod, otherwise, it would be called yellow or gold, right? I think it's almost like calling Threepio "buns of steel". What I love about this movie is how they kept Luke's parentage a secret when filming. In the script, Vader says that Obi-Wan killed Luke's father, and they used that bit when filming. When making the final cut, James Earl Jones and Mark Hamill recorded the one we see here. No one else on set knew the actual twist, so when they all saw the final cut at the premier, Harrison Ford told Hamill "Hey kid, you never told me that" when they all saw the movie

Security was so tight that David Prowse, the guy in the Darth Vader suit, didn't know the character's lines (James Earl Jones did the recording separately while not knowing anything either). Prowse didn't know what he was doing or why. He said he just went in the direction Lucas pointed at, or paused when told to, or turned his head to look at another character when told to.

Vader silently walking off the command deck after not executing anybody is probably one of the most brilliantly underrated parts of the script (apart from the running plot line with the hyperdrive). Without saying a word, we know his mental conflict- especially because we know his big dreams for wresting control of the Empire away from the Emporer are basically scuttled.
@slchance8839
@slchance8839 2 жыл бұрын
i agree, though i didnt realize it until just recently. you're right: he's killed me for less. a LOT less. Veers had one job: deactivate the hyperdrive.....definitely a death sentence. it's subtle nod to the change of trajectory in his character arc. the more i watch these, the more i love them. also, the more i'm saddened that us nostalgia fans couldnt keep our mouths shuts and bad-mouthed Lucas so vitriolicly that he sold the franchise. Dont blame him...he financed the prequels with his own money (almost unheard of) and changed the face of cinema and his fans turned on him when they came out "no talent hack" "ruined my childhood," etc...it was horrible. who would put up with a public like that after great personal cost. So...he sells the franchise and we may never know his full vision. If 1-6 was THIS good....imagine HIS 7-9. Ah well....we got what we deserved.

@@slchance8839 before singing Lucas' praise too loudly, you might want to consider that the film we're seeing here, generally regarded to be the best, is the one that Lucas neither directed, nor produced, nor wrote the screenplay for, and is also the one that, by a wide margin, he tampered with the least out of the original three during his endless "re-masterings."

Now just imagine hearing "I am your father." in the movie theater and then having to wait YEARS to find out if it was really, REALLY true! All the discussions we had around the lunch table in middle school, arguing whether he was or he wasn't, sometimes being certain one way, sometimes being certain the other. THAT was tough. 😀 Loved your reaction. So priceless, and so pure. And, yeah, unlike you we had no definitive answers for anything. 😀But you're not alone in asking "What's that? What happened to him? What's going on?" As a kid I read the canon/not canon sequel/not sequel to the original Star Wars called "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" so I knew more about the characters and some of the proposed story, even if much of it was later altered or just discarded when Star Wars was successful enough to get Empire as its sequel.

Haven’t seen anyone talk about this yet, so I will. The scene in the cave is one of my favorites. It’s a vision quest; a rite of passage into manhood in many tribal cultures around the world and throughout history. When Yoda says that what is in there is “only what you take with you”, it speaks to something philosophers and psychologists have talked about for millennia, that the scariest thing that we have to face is ourselves. That’s also why Luke’s face appears in Vader’s mask; a warning from the Force that if he doesn’t overcome his hatred for Vader, he will become Vader…

The actual lightsabers are really just sticks stuck to the hilts they are using. So they ARE dueling for real! And in post production they've just added the color & blade over what is the stick of the "sword". So simple, so legendary & iconic.

In Star Wars when Obi Wan confronts Vader Alec Guinness is holding the rod pointed directly at the camera. It's very thin. He turns his wrist as as he activates the saber. This makes it look like the blade is extending from the hilt is the power turns on.
