I am looking at the success rate of any endeavor in a game, average rating and dominance over a period of time. The fact that Messi remained the best while several generations and even football philosophies changed, day by day, being best on any field, indifferent against or with who he played with. Maradona was way more inconsistent than Messi, he had MOMENTS and he dominated SOME games and this lasted for a short time. Huge difference. As someone said, Maradona was Maradona sometimes, Messi is Maradona all the time - plus better vision, shooting, balance, football IQ, composure, professionalism, leadership and so on. What we keep seeing for Maradona are the same few (magical indeed) plays he had in some games, but not the hundreds of games where he was "normal". Think about it, from his almost 1000 goals, at least half are beautiful, he has the most dribbles completed in history, highest percentage in history and so on...

For those who wish to compare Maradona and Messi, you have to remember that when Maradona played, defenders were allowed to frequently make challenges that in Messi's days would be an automatic red card. So it was harder to play in those days and I don't think Messi would have been as effective in the Maradona's era, but I think Maradona would have found it easier to play in the later times. So for me the question is easy - Maradona is the better player but Messi is great too. You need to be at least 50 in age to have an opinion on this or you will not have seen enough of Maradona when he was playing.

Being an Englishman I can honestly say that Maradona was the best player in the world at that time, and better than the players we have today. Sadly the hand of God dampened his reputation throughout the world. I believe the reason we don’t get great players like that anymore is because today all they do is constantly pass the ball, I watched one match and I counted 44 passes before I saw a tackle, back then you never saw the ball passed back to the keeper like you do today. Also players are scared to go in for a tackle because other players go down to the ground like an injured fairy.

I might add back in Maradona's day, you could only qualify for the European cup (today's champion's league) by either being the defending European champion or the league champion. There was no other way unlike today where you finish 4th in the league and still qualify for UCL if you belong to the top 4 countries. Football in this respect is different from all other sports in terms of its sea-change in the last 30-32 years. Seen in this light, CR7 and Messi's achievements great though they are need to be put in perspective. The champion's league only started admitting teams finishing second in the league from the 97-98 season and 4 teams per country only from the 1999-2000 season. Don't even get me started on how today's top teams can jam pack their squads with world-class players.

In one sense, modern football is better in terms of players being better educated and more professionalism to avoid the dangers of bad habits/addictions (think Maradona, George Best, Gazza etc).Ultimately, sporting achievement is not the be all and end all.

I totally agree with what you have said and you have raised all the points that matter (I have made similar points here on other chats). Also still recognising Messi as a great player along with a few others, but saying Maradona is different and the best.
