I was at this game with my dad. We were sat next to a couple of Argentinians who went nuts every time he got the ball. Forget the hand of god. He’s not the only one who did that. Just admire the shear ability in days when massive angry defenders had the right to break your leg. For me the GOAT.

Maradona earned his place in history because of '86 and his exploits with Napoli - achievements which came after the notorious injury he received at Barcelona which hampered his dexterity for the remainder of his career. Early footage clearly shows his peak was during the first five or six seasons of his career when he was leaner, faster and more deceptive with the ball. And yet despite the recreational drugs and marathon partying which took off during his time in Europe, he was still seen as the stand-out player in world football. Mind-blowing.

Best footballer to have played the game yet shamefully, people ignore his genius. They remember his handball in 86. Ok, fair enough, but those of limited intelligence ignore the fact that Shilton's 6ft couldn't outjump a 5'5" imp of sheer magnificence and have made a demon of Diego's pure beauty. Remove the politics, the idiosyncrasies and marvel at his astonishing abilities in taming a ball to create such art. Of course, many may speak of Pele, Ronaldo (the 2nd), Messi et al.... but this bloke.... wow... best there's ever been on a football field

Along with Pele by far the greatest. They're in a different league of their own. There never was a more talented player or decisive (despite the quality of his team mates), a genius on the pitch, who played with the kind of physical beauty afforded to ballet, while 10 monsters were trying to half him in absolutely every game. The fouls he endured would have killed Messi, whos not half the player Maradona ever was. I saw them both at their peak, Messi was more consistent, no injuries, no drugs. but in terms of sheer talent, relevance, and capacity to win cups while playing with 10 stones as his team he was just unique. he could win worldcups even if playing alone. i saw maradona do things in important games Messi couldn't do playing with a team full of stars against Racing. period

Yes. We scaled a one nill result ! But maradonna rang rings round our statuesque defence and after just missing what would have been an amazing goal learnt to place the ball with the instep of his foot instead and then went onto score probably the best ever goal against us I certainly have ever seen despite his faults he’s the best footballer of modern times and had to carry the expectations of a country on his shoulders Give credit where credit’s due ? My God! When do the English people learn to be humble and tactful? They are so full of conceit (at least when it comes to football; yet I cannot claim the same for other departments of life). Just two incidents from the past that I personally witnessed: 1- After this match, I remember having read an English football magazine (I forgot its name now), in which John Wark (a Scottish footballer who played for Ipswich Town then) commented that "For now, Keegan is better than Maradona!". I am sorry to say this but this is horseshit. I still wonder what got into Wark to make him say this bullshit. It was a shame for him... 2- Back in June 2002, I came across an English little boy when they were in Turkey wih his family. I just wanted joke with him and asked him which team would win the World Cup 2002 in Japan. He did not even think about his answer and just uttered "England, of course!" Wow man; look at the level of self-confidence of a little brat. Some system must have produced such unrealistic expectations in people when it comes to football.... Yet, I ain't heard no discussion about the third goal of England against Germany in the 1966 World Cup Final from the English Press. That goal should have been disallowed, for it did not go over the line. You see where I am getting at, amigo... Oh by the way, I am Turkish and have not lived in the UK so far....

Considering the v low std of english football, esp at that time, completely incapable of stopping anyone without chopping them down hard, incapable of dribbling a single rival, or moving the ball quickly & accurately, providing the attack with nothing more than very poor long ball crosses, it is obvious that Maradona always excelled against England in WC 86 given that the style of play hadnt changed one inch. English football to this day fails to work enough on ball control, dribbling, fast 1-2s & continue to look like a the old armies lined up with bayonettes vs machine gun fast moving comandos. When will England recognise that they need to actually play with the ball ? IMO in WC86 Maradona was over-elevated to God level, whilst not being anywhere near as skilled as Pele at the same age, in greart part tot he terrible defending from mid ield and defense in in his most famous goal (not the one with his left hand).
