Diego Ortiz (Toledo, 1510/Nápoles, 1570)
Salmo 109 "Dixit Dominus Domino meo", a 4 alternatim
Oráculo del Señor a mi Señor:
«Siéntate a mi derecha
y haré de tus enemigos
estrado de tus pies».
Desde Sión extenderá el Señor
el poder de tu cetro:
somete en la batalla a tus enemigos.
«Eres príncipe desde el día de tu nacimiento,
entre esplendores sagrados;

Diego Ortiz (Toledo, 1510/Naples, 1570) was a Spanish composer and musicologist. Ortiz served the Spanish court in Italy for a number of years. Initially he was the master of song for the viceregal and later the master of music to the Duke of Alcala. Ortiz dedicated his -"First book of Music" to the Duke and the hymns, psalms, Salves and Magnificat appearing in that work are all based on plainsong. Ortiz's main contribution in the annals of music history was his -"Trattado de glosas" which was a theory of ornamentation. In the body of his work Ortiz included a number of written examples of ornaments and discussed how long these ornaments should be played; unfortunately, he did not discuss how embellishments were to be added to musical scores on sight or in an improvisatory manner
The Lord said unto my Lord: "Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool."
The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Sion; rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
Prince on the day of thy birth in the beauties of holiness: before dawn, like dew, did I beget thee.
The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent: "Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek."
The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.
He shall drink of the brook on the way, therefore shall he lift up the head.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
