Also not reprinting them in Zendikar despite seemingly good synergy without breaking them in standard is a mistake and a bad decision. Them not being foil is a plus for many players tho as they'll never have any issues at any event because of curled cards or anything like that. I just think you missed the point of OP that this secret lair is as expensive as commander anthology so it isn't even actually 1v3 fetchland vs deck as Vince joked but 1v4 which is even worse :D

@@GamerdevilPro can't blame wizards for standard, power level wise. Zen lands broke Zendikar and worldwake draft due to wizards underestimating landfall and red black cards. While Khan standard had onslaught lands fetching bfz dual lands in an environment with no wasteland or blood moon (delve spells didnt help). The real problem is that wizards is too attached to secondary prices while knowing they won't print these for standard and screwing over anyone not interested in Standard

I am a Yu-Gi-Oh! Player and the same is happening here too, Meta Relevant cards are all printed in the highest rarety and Short printed to oblivion, and we end up paying 100$+/ per card that we need a playset of, now competitive yugioh "Standard" Decks are 600$ minimum if you want to see any kind of tournament success

I think the company with the best damage control measures is Bushiroad with Vanguard. They basically did a "Pioneer" (called V-Standard format) scism only a couple years later prices went out of control and then they laid out a complete price control strategy with "modern-alike" (called Premium format) only product with a small pool of new cards once a year and timely functional reprints to sway people away from old and/or overpriced cards. This make Premium more of a V-Standard+ format, with new cards slowly but surely replacing old ones. The real problem Bushi has is its Japanese identity which is rooted deep, which makes Japan the favourite kid, so everything has to be implemented there first and only then transfered to global sets (maybe).

How much of this price increase is because of a the high demand and stores not getting enough boxes? Where I lived, I paid my box for 207$ Canadian and there was only 1 store that had plenty of boxes on Saturday. Everywhere else was completely wiped out. If this set is truly unlimited printing and the store clerks told me they were coming pretty confidant about the supply, maybe the prices will calm down after a few weeks. Gotta just add, I’m not an expert, just saying what I experienced this weekend

There is so much about MTG I wish would change. The price is possibly my top priority. I like owning the cards. To this extent I like to play the cards. Sure enough I even like to have a ever growing collection. Yet, I can't because the price is to high for a lot of the "must have" cards, even in case of me just buying one for one specific commander deck. Everyone in our playgroup has converted to using almost exclusively proxy lands at this point due to the ridiculous price point. We play a lot of edh, and building and playing new decks is a frequent occurrence in our group. But having to buy new lands for every new deck would make that impossible with the current prices. So until those prices become reasonable again; *SPOILER* - they won't! - we will continue to purchase and use proxy lands to continue to enjoy the game at a much fairer price.

In arena, while playing around 10 hours per week, All I was doing was dropping money on the pre order during dominaria standard and I could get 2 Tier 1 decks (esper control and sultai). The problem were the rare wild cards since the shocks and checks were so important. However, it was doable for around 70 CAD per magic set.

2nd note. I haven't put money into standard in years now. I do draft though (preferably draft days/weekends where going 3-0 wins a free draft ;) ), I sometimes will get a random box for cheap (from judges looking to flip boxes to pay for trips) and draft it with friends which adds to my traders. I also haven't had arena on my computer in months, prior to deleting it i would get "codes" to redeem in my email to bring me back, but everyone of them failed to redeem lol so i never bothered to give them anymore of my time if they couldn't even get the codes working to try to bring me back. Either way I stay away from standard for the most part making cheap decks if i have the cards already from drafts / easily able to trade for stuff with my huge trade binder.

My theory has always been that people who get to decide what gets reprinted have a giant conflict of interests by having some massive investment in expensive singles. That's the only thing I can think of that keeps them killing the game.

I feel like casual Commander decks in the 6-8 (no dual lands and almost no power 9 or reserve list necessary) power level range have been the best value out of all formats & metas considering how long they remain relevant and bang for the buck related to card costs.

The biggest thing that makes standard so expensive is WoTC printing awful Rares and Mythics Rares. The more Rares/Mythics that they print that will never see any format because theyre just bad cards make the good Rares/Mythics that much harder to obtain, making a single card worth $40+. And they know this, they absolutely make the best cards so rare solely to help out the secondary market. Make them more common and people would flock to standard more.

I have an idea. Make a reprint set. Don't make the rarity too high, but change the set-symbol/color. Then there are more playable card, but the OG cards don't drop too drastically in price. Just make it painfully obvious that you have the reprinted "cheap" version. That way people can still collect and boast about their expensive fetches

Pokemon company releases collector boxes and tins that contain staples for standard format at prices that essentially neuter the secondary market for them. Making top tier decks more accessible without crushing their customers. It's a shame Wizards can't see how this makes that game such a better experience for their players. Secret Lair does seem like a step in that direction though, yet people complain because it takes money away from the LGS

I truly think that having frequent Secret Lair drops isn't great for players. Yes players can elect to not buy it, but I quickly get drained from my budget for cards in a short amount of time with no time in between to build up a buffer before the next one goes by. I'd love to have gotten Women's Day Secret Lair but I can't afford to do that constantly so I just miss out.

To be honest, price of current standard decks are driven by cards being multiformat staple. Temur Reclamation is expensive because of shocklands, fabled passage, Uro and Brazen Borrower. Other cards are pretty cheap, the same is for Fires.

So this was from before the Fetchland secret lair (see: 22:20, 31:40). Not that this one product changes the cost of fetchlands much if at all, but it would've been good to have that covered here. 12:05 I'm pretty sure we had competitive Standard decks for less than $100 just before the previous rotation, like the mono blue deck that won the Mythic Championship. $150 for a single colored Standard deck is already pretty high. 19:10 Ehh, what about Tron and Amulet Titan? Those decks have 0 fetches and still costs well over $600 (due to Walking Ballista, Cavern of Souls, Chalice of the Void, Amulet and Azusa). Not to mention decks with Stoneforge Mystic and Aether Vial. 56:40 But muh ＲＥＰＲ I N T Ｅ Q U I T Y !

so with the other card games part, as a yugioh player (as well as mtg of course), certain cards which are key to optimising certain decks cost almost equivalent to fetch lands, like Pot of Extravagance (£80 each at peak), Lightning Storm (£90ish each at peak) and Fantastical Dragon Phantazmay (£80ish each at peak) just as 3 examples of "staple" cards. I don't think competitive viability and budget are 2 words that will ever be connected when it comes to card games
