Thanks for the explanation! I filled up my 6.0 Powerstroke in AZ, made a trip to CA and was going to top off before I headed home. No DF-2 to be found. Only Bio Diesel or Renewable. I didn’t know about either, so I drove back home and filled up as soon as I got into AZ. Good thing I have a 45 gallon tank in my Excursion. Thanks again for the info!!

Excellent info Ron. I hadn't heard or seen renewable diesel, but hope it replaces Bio diesel, which I try to avoid. Filling up with Bio is a gamble, as a pump labeled B5 may actually contain B20 or even B100, if the station attendant didn't label it properly.

I see a lot of renewable here in CA. Unfortunately they also mix in 20% bio so it completely eliminates the benefits in my opinion.

I have a 5500 chassis and my handbook says to use diesel 2, but I had to fill up heading south to Santa Clarita and needed to use what was there, diesel 20. So thank you for his video because it assured me not to worry about a one time use

The engine will burn it fine. Although it will get more and more common to find the B20 as time goes on.

Glad to see you're still out there. I recently sold my 2010 Sprinter MH. I won't ever own a Mercedes product again way too fussy to work on. I enjoyed it for the 4 years and 12,000 miles I had it. I paid 50k for it and sold it for 51k, can't complain about that! Cheers and stay healthy.

Renewable diesel is the best choice, especially for all the new diesel engines that run Bosch CP4 fuel pumps. The lubricity of #2 diesel was greatly reduced when ultra-low-sulphur was mandated. Biodiesel also has poor lubricity. This means the fuel pumps like to chew themselves up, which in turn damages the engine. The only solution so far has been to run diesel fuel additives which try to increase the fuel's lubricity. Renewable diesel, on the other hand, has much improved lubricity already. It also burns cleaner, which in turn helps preserve the life of your emissions control system. Its higher cetane means more power at higher RPM. And as you mentioned in the video, it has a lower freeze point. For these reasons, Renewable diesel is all I will run in my engine unless I'm on a road trip where R95 or R99 are simply not available.

Just back from 3400+ miles in View 24V- AZ to WA and return. Paid between $4.99 and $8.29 a gallon. Tried all 3 fuel stations in Coachella (TA, Loves and Chevron), all had ONLY B20, so skipped and picked up a few gallons #2 in Desert Center to get us to Quartzsite. Thanks for the explanation, good to know about Renewable.

Renewable diesel (or HVO diesel) is chemically a fair bit different from most petro diesel, but identical to most forms of synthetic diesel derived from coal or petroleum byproducts (or basically any source of carbon or hydrocarbons) usually made using fischer-tropsch synthesis (if gassifying coal or biomass, or potentially using natural gas) or through hydrogenation if using heavy petroleum fractions like bunker oil. (though any sources with sulfur content have to be desulfurized first as it will poison the catalysts used in the synthesis process, though that means there's basically 0% sulfur content in any of these products) It's sometimes called synthetic paraffin oil or similar things in other countries. The end product is a pure mixture of mostly (or entirely) straight-chain hydrocarbons that are fully saturated (no double bonds or benzene rings, so zero aromatic content). It's chemically similar to most mineral oil (though a bit lighter/thinner and lower freezing point), or very similar to odorless paraffin lamp fuel. It's also very, very similar to the "Sustainable Aviation Fuel" being introduced as a jet fuel blending agent or substitute. (though in that field, the 0% aromatic content has issues with causing leaks on old fuel systems with the seals all swollen from absorbing portions of the aromatic fractions in normal jet fuel, like naphthalene) R-95 very, very low odor, is usually colorless and transparent, and should be quite low toxicity. It's a bit heavier and more viscous than kerosene and obviously has a higher flash point, but it burns a lot like odorless paraffin lamp fuel. It will also have solvent properties more like mineral oil, and might actually dissolve sludge and deposits even less than petro diesel or kerosene. It's also less bad to get on skin or clothing. That said, one odd quality is that it has a very low freezing point or gel point (like kerosene or jet fuel), but also a high flash point, so while it won't freeze up in cold regions in winter, it might have cold starting issues with some older, cold-starting temperamental engines. (probably mostly in older IDI diesels that need glow plugs for cold starting) I could be wrong though, and the high cetane number compensates for that by simply auto-igniting better at lower temperatures when under compression. Oh, and at least with CA's Renewable Diesel program, a mix of waste oils and fats from all sorts of agricultural and food processing sources are used, basically a wide variety of waste animal and vegetable fats, including fractions not usually used for biodiesel.

Biomass seems to be a very generic Term for anything not from crude oil. Renewable seems fine but the biodiesel does have some issues. But then again don’t let it ruin your trip. Not much we can do about it.

I had mine done. Initially seemed to lose a little under 1 mog and noticed more DEF usage. However with the price of diesel almost $6, I’ve been driving slower(60) and mileage has been back up to over 15 mpg. Engine runs the same. Overall the $3500 settlement Mercedes sent me makes up for any extra fuel usage so I’m ok with it.

If it does not say B20 then it can be up to 5% Bio diesel. B20 can be anywhere from 6% to 20%, but you have no way of knowing what the mix is you are buying. I too avoid B20 in my Cummins largely due to the solvent nature of it. This means I avoid truck stops because they are always B20, and go to non truck stop/travel center type places, except Buc-ee's is OK.

I always Try to run the Diesel at Costco (which they call “Top Tier” type) - or, if I’m in a pinch I’ll run ULSD from Pilot and Flying J (same company). I recently did a trip from California to East Texas. When I started, I filled up on Costcos Diesel and I had NO PROBLEM 🙅‍♂️ (again, starting from CA). It was only when I hit Texas, that I noticed ALL the Pilot/Flying J stations had only the Bio-Diesel, with ALSO 5 to 20 Ethanol added. I found that when I used THAT combo mixture (from again, Pilot/Flying J), that my RAM 1500 Eco-Diesel would run MANY MORE Re-Gen cycles.👎(And using a TON of DEF fluid BTW😡🤬). This told me that: 1) My RAM likes Top Tier BETTER (cause it runs cleaner), 2) The Bio-Diesel/Ethanol mix (from Pilot/Flying J) is essentially a BUNCH OF CRAP 💩 (for my RAM eco-diesel). I WISH that I could get Costco Top Tier from my location (in MS), but unfortunately, Costco have VERY few Diesel offerings in the South (mainly, out on the West Coast). So I’m essentially SOLD 👍(on Top Tier), with LESS Re-Gen & Cleaner Engine.

So much incorrect in your post. Renewable diesel is NOT approved by MB. OFF-Road diesel DOES NOT have higher sulfur. All diesel used in US must be ULSD, even train and industrial diesel fuel. The issue with renewable is vapor pressure and flash point. So I suggest you either correct this or remove it.
