What is a current transformer used for?
A Current Transformer (CT) is used to measure the current of another circuit. CTs are used worldwide to monitor high-voltage lines across national power grids. A CT is designed to produce an alternating current in its secondary winding that is proportional to the current that it is measuring in its primary.
What is low voltage current transformer?
Low voltage current transformers are intended for supplying measuring instruments and protection circuits of electrical power devices with a maximum operating voltage of 0.72 kV and frequency of 50 Hz (or 60 Hz after prior arrangement with the manufacturer).

A current transformer (CT) is a type of transformer that is used to reduce or multiply an alternating current (AC). It produces a current in its secondary which is proportional to the current in its primary.
What happens if CT secondary is open?
The secondary side of a current transformer should never be kept in open condition because, when kept open, there is a very high voltage found across the secondary side. This high voltage causes a high magnetizing current to build up on the secondary side which in turn causes high flux and makes the core to saturate.

Otherwise (polarity reversed), the devices starts malfunctioning, i.e energy meter shows negative readings, relay may read negative current hence relay may activate the trip circuit, reverse power relay activation is alternator or generator circuits etc.
Why CT secondary never left open?
The secondary side of the current transformer is always kept short-circuited in order to avoid core saturation and high voltage induction so that the current transformer can be used to measure high values of currents.
Why CT secondary is 1A or 5A?
Less number of turns also means that reduced core size. Hence, for a given CT ratio and burden, a CT with a 5A secondary will be cheaper, smaller and lighter. Thus, on the outlook, it definitely appears that CTs with 5A secondary current are far more superior to those with 1A secondary.
What happens if you open circuit a current transformer?
When a CT secondary encounters an open or high resistance circuit, it quickly becomes a step-up voltage transformer. It then presents dangerously high voltages that are at a minimum, unsafe, and frequently destructive to the device insulation and surrounding components
