Lovely looking truck. I've heard of the Toyota Townace. But for some reason, they were never sold in the USA. I love the sound of the diesel engine.

@Calvin G I know. It's a damn shame. Toyota sold a van version in the 1980s, although it was simply called the Toyota Van, not Hiace, not Townace, not Liteace, just Van! What the hell?!

@Calvin G Yeah. I think it also depends on how fast you're going when you crash. I got to drive a Mitsubishi Delica van, which was sold in the USA back in the 80s. I ran into some downed power lines. Thankfully no one was hurt, but given how little room between the driver and the bumper of the car, it's incredible no one got hurt.

@Calvin G Between the Suzuki and the Toyota, I'd take the Toyota. I wouldn't take it on Hiwy 16 between Tacoma and Bremerton, unless it's a short distance, say University Place and Gig Harbor. These look more suited to city driving, where speeds are between 20mph and 40mph than to freeway driving, where the speed is usually above 60mph.

@Calvin G I don't know. It might've. I would think that providing a strong frame and crash area would at least prevent occupants from crushing their legs in a 10mph accident. More important, assuming you're alive and able to move, you want to be able to get out of the car after you've crashed.

Do these town ace trucks come with. Difflock? Do you know if modern mini trucks 2016 onwards come with a difflock? Reason I am asking because I need to buy a mini truck to do some light work in an area and there is a short climb which is very slick

It would help if you gave a 'ball park' figure on each model of truck. It doesn't have to be rock solid and nailed down but a general idea of what we are talking about would be very helpful. Interesting alternatives for sure. I saw them working in Japan and was nothing but impressed. Take care. Doug

It is very difficult since exchange rates change and shipping rates vary greatly depending on where you are. As well as each truck is a special case. For a townace like this you would be $10-15k CAD

No sir it depends on your budget not every one can afford the town ace. Here in philippines the suzuki carry is the cheapest surplus vehicle for an average filipino worker that's why suzuki kei cars are very popular here in philippines. But for me the town ace win because here in philippines diesel is much cheaper than gasoline and town ace diesel is much easier to maintain than the carry.

What are your thoughts of putting tracks on the diesel?.. enough giddy up to make them perform? How much more do they run cost wise ?

Biggest issue I could see is body clearance. These bigger diesels aren't as available as the smaller trucks so there aren't many guys doing lift kits etc for them.... so would be a bit of a custom job for sure but more than enough power to handle tracks.

Can you get this Diesel Mini in a Van version. I am a Mobile Mechanic and carry about $75,000 worth of tools at all times since I work 24/7/365. Doesn't matter if it is a Toyota, Mazda or other manufacturer. I do like the Diesel but can be just as happy with a Gasoline. Would also like the 2H-4H - 4L selector.

Can these trucks be licensed and registered to drive on Ontario roads? Not sure about the laws regarding right hand drive in Ontario. Never mind, I just answered my own question...As long as they are 15 years old, so 2004 and older if my math is correct.

yup these go back to the 80's. If you are in Canada we can bring them in for you. If you Are in the USA just look up your local JDM importer of choice as they should be able to find you one.

Michael Jones that completely depends on where you live as each country has its own import laws. If you are in the US for example this TownAce would have to be 25 years old before it would be allowed into the country.

This was a pricy one. Super hard to find clean low mile 4x4 diesel. We sold this unit for around $14,000 Canadian with what the exchange rate was at the time. Customer wanted a truck they could use as a utility vehicle around an industrial plant yet still run down the road if they needed.

78HP (and 108.3 ft-lb at 2,400 rpm) not 80HP according to the specs (3C-E)... :P They do have a turbo diesel version of that engine (3C-T) that makes 87HP. The best part about the 3C-T is it has 138.6 ft·lb at 1,800 rpm and 159.2 ft·lb at 2,600 rpm. The gas engine is pretty peppy it looks like, the 3S-FE, and it has 126 hp at 5,600 rpm and 132 ft-lb at 4,400 rpm. Not bad for a 2L. More than enough for a little truck like that. I would have like the front tire moved forward more like on the Kei Truck. I wish they made a left side steering wheel version. A little tipper would be nice too. Put a 2" lift and a little bigger tire and maybe a locking rear dif.
