With Thomas and the Evil Diesel, if I was writing the book, I'd have it set in 1967, and change up a few key plot elements. 1. Diesel is brought in not because Percy was sick, but because they needed a station pilot because Duck has a branch line now. Sir Topham Hatt is hesitant about it, but decides if Diesel doesn't improve, he'll send him back. 2. Bear is taking a train along the mainline and leaks oil on Gordon's Hill. 3. Instead of helping Thomas, Annie and Clarabel out of the runaway siding, it's Duck, Alice and Mirabel. Duck is taking his coaches up Gordon's hill on a "through train" to Barrow (which is something that WildNorWester has showcased in his series), and slips ala Thomas in the book. 4. Instead of going back to the Other Railway on a good note, Diesel remains on Sodor as the new station pilot.

Those all sound like good ideas, I'm not sure about Duck and his two autocoaches going all the way to Barrow is likely as it's quite a distance for only two coaches, but maybe terminating at Maron or Cronk? Nice ideas anyway!

I would've moved it to the 1970s and had Diesel be a dedicated goods engine on Duck's line.

i would make duck get stuck on an incline in his branch due to donald’s oil tankers prior to them leaking on the like and have diesel be the only available engine to help and TFC told diesel about it but diesel willingly asked to help duck before TFC asked him to help duck

In addition to what Buster the Steamroller said, Diesel may have also been kept black because Duck may not have recognized Diesel in green or blue. Seeing a Class 08 could've reminded him of Diesel, but he wouldn't have immediately assumed it was Diesel.

That would explain why Arry, Bert, Splatter and Dodge didn't have step ladders on them. They would've been removed before their first appearances.

Great point at 2:20, which I think is the best reason to disregard the livery, since Diesel would not even look like how he does in the book at the earliest it could take place anyway.

Regarding his livery, there is also a BR black 08 in Thomas and The Great Railway Show, which takes place much later. It could just be a feature of 08s in the Thomas world.
@sodorislandmodels63323 жыл бұрын
I think that may be 13079, the class 08 owned by the NRM, which is painted black. Good point though!

Great video mate. I might argue Thomas and the Evil Diesel should be dated early based on Diesel's black livery (probably late 60s), as its the only real indicator we have. Of course, the other issue is why BR would have sent an engine all the way from Hull to Sodor, rather than somewhere closer.
@sodorislandmodels63323 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong, I know what you mean. However like I say Diesel would have looked different even still in a black livery in 1961. The removal of ladders and addition of the plates on the lower slots wouldn't have a required an overhaul and repaint. So either Diesel's livery is wrong, or his fittings are wrong in Thomas and the Evil Diesel (at least) 😅 It would make sense for Diesel to have come from the London Midland region rather than the North Eastern, or Southern, but all the evidence points to Diesel coming from either of those, if you go to my 23 possibilities.

About that... The BR 08s started to be retired starting in 1967, so it's very possible that Diesel was retired, then picked up by a heritage railway between the events of Duck and the Diesel Engine and Thomas and the Evil Diesel. This would explain the lack of modifications and black livery, as most heritage railways focus on originality of their equipment.
@sodorislandmodels63322 жыл бұрын
True, however the text of Evil Diesel suggests he's still employed by British Rail rather than a preserved line 🙂

You have done a great deal of research, and I do congratulate you. inspired after watching this mini series of videos on “Diesel”, I’m inspired to make a model class 08 representing No 13236’s earliest appearance in the railway series book - Duck & The Diesel Engine (August of 1958.) for a future model railway project I’m planning.

My own canon, follows up where 13236 left off in modern times, (Bluebell Railway.) Management found him surplus to requirements, and he was then purchased & moved westward to a small heritage railway (Ex-GWR Branchline,) Also home of another familiar sudrian diesel (No D5702 “BoCo”.) Due to the line’s rolling stock & preference of it’s management, Diesel would pretty much retain his BR Black livery from the Bluebell days. I know it sounds pretty loose, but I’m still working out the headcanon, wouldn’t make logical sense otherwise, has to be a reason to move Diesel to a western heritage railway. Do you have any ideas on how I could improve the idea, and give a more realistic reason for Diesel being moved on?

@@sodorislandmodels6332 At some point in 2014 I’d say to start, as that is when Diesel became the main shunter at Nemesis Rail. This leaves me with a slight geographical dilemma, as that is slightly within the western region, But the subsequent line from Burton On Trent, falls directly into London Midland territory.

What is your take on the other types of diesel-like Daisy, Mavis, Diesel 10, and more? Do you truly believe that Thomas the Tank Engine was remodeled from an E-2 Tank Engine to a Jinty like Tank Engine?
@sodorislandmodels63323 жыл бұрын
I'll certainly do Mavis and Daisy videos at some point, but as my research isn't complete yet I'm not sure about them yet. I think Thomas probably did get the straight valance like a Jinty is that's what you mean, but he's another character I have yet to start!
