Looking back through the years, the vast majority of engine problems I've experienced are in some way linked to the cooling system. Well done summary!

David. Thank you! We know there was quite a lot of detail in these two videos and it can be a lot to go through. However, If you know how it works, you are halfway to fixing it when it does not. We started this channel we wanted to share and help folks out. It is what we are all about. the BEME series has had some fantastic comments. The Top Tips are very popular and comments like yours inspire us to keep doing what we are doing. Again thank you. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Thank you very much for the torqוe value table. How do you know how to set the closing strength just with a spanner?
@SVImpavidus4 жыл бұрын
Hi Eliezer. Good question. With a spanner or wrench that is 12 inches long the force you apply at the end is equal to the foot / pound torque rating that you need. You can use a spring balance scale to check this. With a 6 inch spanner it would be twice the foot / pound value. If your working with Newton /Metres the principal is the same. Half the distance double the force. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. Ant.

Congrats on this concluding part of THE masterclass in marine diesel cooling systems. Do your worm drive clips not have a hex head on them to enable tightening with a socket?😉😀⛵️

High Norman. The short answer is yes. The long answer is we had the aft cabin out and all the stuff in the forward cabin where my nut spinners are. I hate slotted fixings!!!! When the screwdriver does not slide out and bite you, the burs on the fixing slash your arms as you wiggle around them. Someone who shall remain nameless refused and almost mutinied when I suggested we needed to move everything to get at them. 🤔 We were thinking about a video on how 4 stroke diesels work. The strokes, induction, compresion, injection, exhaust. Clean burn, white smoke, black smoke, blue smoke, steam, Etc. Do you think that would be something that would be of use to Sailors? Obviously we are asking someone who knows these things. But, how many sailors just don't know how they work or what to look for? If it helped just a few people out or saved a few engines we think it would be valuable to folks. What is your thoughts? Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

@@SVImpavidus Ant - I was just pulling your chain.😂 Yes absolutely a back to basics look at the prime mover would be a good addition to the body of work you are producing. To be honest it never fails to surprise me how many sailors seem content to be be at sea while apparently content to admit their ignorance about engine matters or electrics. Their lives could depend on these systems!😳

thanks for the great video: question how the dingy inflation hose can be connected to the line of the S-drive to pump out any stuff while hose are still connected ?
@SVImpavidus2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Undo the intake hose from the underside of the raw water strainer. This is above the waterline. Slide the end of the hose over the valve connector on the foot pump. They are both 19mm diameter. tighten the hose clip gently. then simply pump away. Yo will hear the air coming out the drive leg intake when it is clear. Sail Safe mate. Ant & Cid

Excellent video, as usual, Anthony! One point I am puzzled about is the tip for conventional sea-cocks adding a scoop gate, with the gate looking forward. I have recently replaced the original engine on my Albin Vega sailboat with a Beta 14. The instruction manual states "We do not recommend the use of ‘Scoop’ type water pickups, because if fitted the wrong way around the water will be forced through the pump and into the exhaust system whilst the vessel is sailing. This is very dangerous as the exhaust will eventually fill and sea / raw water will back up into the engine through the exhaust valve. Catastrophic failure will result as soon as the engine is restarted." By "fitted wrongly" the manual means with the gate facing forward. Do you think this recommendation is specific to the Beta (Kubota) engine because of its raw water flow design or should be generalized to other engines? Merry Christmas and serene 2021 to you and Cindy. :-)

I have never heard of that before. It takes 0.433 psi of pressure to push 1 foot of water so conceivably it could push water into the hose. Could it push it up the hose into the strainer and past the pump, then through the heat exchanger? It sounds theoretically possible. However, in the same way the traditional seacock could be overwhelmed in big seas. Or a saildrive like ours where the inlets face forward. The Beta engines are brilliant, we have recommended them to loads of folks. It seems a little strange that Yanmar, Volvo and others do recommend them. Perhaps they differ in some way, they have had an incident or are just being cautious? Obviously twin engine power boats or cats would be at a huge risk when running on one engine. There must be a reason they make the statement... Have a great Christmas. Sail Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Thanks Anthony. I've never seen a mention of adding glycerin to the impeller replacement. I noticed you didn't use a sealant when adding the gasket. Do gaskets ever need a sealant? Would white lithium grease work? Cheers.
@SVImpavidus Жыл бұрын
Hi. Some gaskets seem to hold better with smear of silicone grease on them but we never use a sealant. I have heard of folks using a thin coat of something a bit sticky but the worry is it may ooze out and get into the heat exchanger. Sail Safe mate. Ant & Cid

You said you would include a link in the description to the video on heat exchangers, but I don't see the link there. I think this is the link, right? kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnfGlYBupLd7ftk
