In terms of smoothness and overall performance, I think there are a couple inline-6 diesel engines that will be worth remembering as the most advanced, given that companies are moving away from diesel development: the BMW B57 (50d, 45d, 40d, some 30d models) and the Mercedes-Benz OM656 (some 350d and 400d models). Honorable mention also to Audi's (VW) family of V6 and V8 now selling as 50TDI and 60TDI, and I would also say Alfa's new 2.2 aluminum block I4 diesel which is the evolutionary pinnacle of the 'Multijet', a family that made history of small diesel engines

I've unfortunately still never tried a petrol engine and what it means to have a car like that and I'd like to for their higher revs, higher power output and of course better sound. Diesel engines are generally more reliable, consume less and are torquey as heck. When it comes to the fuel cost, gas oil (diesel) used to be cheaper than petrol but nowadays they're almost identical. Their sound isn't the best and normally need to go through tougher pollution restrictions. When it comes to warming it up or travelling short distances, I've never had a problem with neither of these things. Also, worth noting that in case of an electrical failure, a diesel engine would keep running, unlike a petrol one.

Me saying yes to every thing positive about diesel because it's been 9 years and my Fiat diesel engine (car from Maruti Suzuki) is still going smooth. Had it overhauled in 2021 internally but still works like a charm. The pickup it gives to overtake or pickup from 0 is feels awesome.

Diesels can go 400k without issues? What? Exact opposite, petrol ones can. Diesel cars constantly need new parts after 150k kilometers and their parts are expensive. Do i even need to mention the power loss after 200k kilometers? Petrol engines are much better for daily or performance use.

Other way around Diesels have longer piston strokes which promotes higher torque at lower RPM. Petrol has a larger piston surface area and shorter stroke to promote higher HP and higher RPMs.

If you want to inflict a diesel on yourself, don't waste your money on a rear wheel drive BMW designed for driving enjoyment. A VW passat TDI will do just fine.

I did own a 2014 BMW 520d for 3 years and it was a pretty good daily, However it was way too underpowered for the chassis. That’s why I’ve switched to the 328i, It’s more balanced in terms of weight and power IMO.

Short Distance with modern diesel is no problem, but you need regularly driving the motor warm so it can heat up to burn the particles right in the filter! When u drive mostly short distancrs than go with petrol otherwise diesel is better…
