That open space on the 20th floor was a restaurant and lounge called The Continental Room up to the time of the tornado and for sometime after the building reopened. I don't think there has ever been anything else up there. What a wonderful monument to mid-20th century modern design the old "Great Plains Life Building" is.

It should be noted that the lower part of the elevator's car panel shown enabled a part-time operator to drive when usage becomes busy. The "pass" button allowed the operator to by-pass certain floors if the car is crowded to capacity. Pass does not function when elevator is in full automatic mode.

Hey, there’s 1970’s Westinghouse Selectomatic Elevators at Tampa International Airport and there still totally original. You should check these out before the modernization in September

I remember when I used to work for an air compressor service company in Cleveland Ohio and I was sent on a service call to downtown at a place called The Keith building to install an air compressor and sure enough the building had the Westinghouse Selectomatic elevators exactly laid out in the video here along with the same style cars and I remember seeing the buttons pop out when you reach the floor you want , That was back in the early 80s but I don't know if they're still there in today's world

I went to that building when I was in Cleveland recently, those elevators are now modded by Otis, however the building next door to it still has Original Westy with White Pop Out. Those are going to be modded starting in January though.

@@FloridianElevators Also when I went there , There were quite a few electricians rewiring the entire building and they had these gigantic fuse panels which had both cartridge and screw in fuses , I can imagine how tough of a job that is rewiring a high rise building that's already built

Franz Ferdinand when the tornado hit the building, the building ended up being twisted so the fire marshal ordered that only the first eight floors can be used

I went here today, and they have since been modernized AGAIN by Otis… so, the ones that were modernized by Schindler were once again modernized by Otis! Also, the Selectomatic panel has been fully removed thanks to the Lubbock Fire Department requiring it to be in a room where the fire department can easily be reached.

These were getting modernized with Schindler 500A last time I was here in June 2014.

If Schindler did mod these; then they probably got some ugly HT VR fixtures or something. Maybe it was upgraded to PORT? The only way we can find out if this story is indeed true is if some visits the place.
