Amen to that! I suggest KZbin! "Souped up recipes" is great for (South East Asian) cooking techniques - a lot of it pretty Chinese, but I learned a lot of interesting and useful techniques to make varied and delicious dishes on a tiny budget - add Abbey's general guidelines about nutrition, veggies and satiety - and you have a good start! "Miwa's Japanese Kitchen" is an excellent channel to learn how a busy Japanese housewife and working mom keeps her family well and happily fed in a practical way - surprisingly applicable to the experience of being a poor and overworked student 🤗 Plus both of these ladies are sweet and make lovely videos. I hope Abbey will take up your suggestion, and until then - the best of wishes, and I hope you'll find inspiration to make cooking a favourite hobby and fun challenge as much as I have! Loads of love from Denmark ❤️ 🤗

Some good foods to prioritise are lentils, cabbage, bananas, ground flax seed( cheapest way to get omega 3 which is normally very expensive), Potatoes ( sweet and unsweet), canola oil for cooking, frozen vegetables of all types, rice, bread, frozen chicken, eggs, milk, and on sale produce.

@@jonahpeacock2561 Yup! Learn to make cabbage in a bunch of ways! I'd say seasoning are key! Learn to use fish sauce - can be stinky, but works wonders! Nigella seeds and black sesame seeds are effectful Fermenting opens up a lot of options, both like kimchi but also something as simple as making a yogurt dressing or boiled in vinegar, salt'n sugar - pickles are a nice topping Ferment, stew, wok, dres up in tahini, vinaigrette, paste of grilled paprika or freshly squeezed orange juice dressing makes the lovely cheap cabbage wonderfully versatile! 😄 learn to love cabbage 💚

Abbey--THANK YOU for calling out the "do your research" phrase in the wellness community. So many lay people do not truly understand research, statistics, study design, etc. I have a PhD and when I "do my research", I am reading articles from peer-reviewed journals and thinking about the information in those articles with a critical eye, not just doing a Google search or reading a Reddit discussion board.

I respect my mechanic, my accountant and my doctors because of their experience and expertise. I may challenge them and ask questions, but I am not so ignorant to think that just because I watched a KZbin tutorial I can fix everything wrong with my car.

And he does not discuss papers that were funded by the industry - including the walnut study, but mostly in North America they tend to be beef, chicken, shrimp and egg. YES, @lizziesef! Dr. Gregor has done more nutrition research than anyone else could even THINK about doing and donates 100% of his profits to charity. Thanks, Abbey, for trying to insinuate to your viewers that he’s just a biased doctor out for monetary gain (we could say the same about you and your KZbin channel- do you donate 100% to charity? I doubt it, so in essence, you yourself are out for monetary gain.), but the man is a gem amongst nutrition researchers. He always says that if firm evidence against plant-based nutrition comes out tomorrow, he would 100% change his recommendations. He’s about presenting the evidence, lowering our risk for cardiovascular events and other co-morbidities, and not about promoting a certain diet. In other words (and I mean this in the nicest way possible), Dr. Gregor is way out of your league, so unless you’re planning on getting on his level, you might want to put your negativity into something else. He’s just too good to come for, especially when your statements about him were completely false, so you obviously don’t know him well. It’s just sad when even the great researchers have people like you trying to put them down. You missed an opportunity here to direct your viewers to some genuinely fascinating information on health and nutrition at nutritionfacts.org. Instead, you did what you seem to preach against, and you spread misinformation about someone.

I think she was just saying that in general, if someone giving nutrition advice has a service or product they are selling about that advice, it's good to consider that they might have some biases. Obv not all people who have a book out, courses, a blog up, donate all their revenues to charity. So in general it's solid advice.

Julia Enders is pretty great. She is a young Doctor who became known in Germany for her book "Darm mit Charme" which can be loosely translated to "charming gut" in which she talks very evidence based about this wonderful and complex organ, how it works and touches on a lot of uncomfortable toppics like pooping and farting. Altought she does include some tips on what might work for certain things (like the importance of fiber or altering the sitting position to help with the Nr. 2) it is a judgement free book without any "follow this diet and never eat gluten again and all your problems will be solved" nonsense or any other agenda. It is just a lot of Information on the gut presented in an understandable and humerous way. I really enjoyed it.

Known biases for any source is used to critically think about what they say. Eg, if JK Rowling is talking about trans people, you have to take into account that she has expressed her disdain for this group so it’s important to make sure what she is saying about trans people is true. It doesn’t mean that everything she says about any topic is automatically wrong but more time and effort is needed to come to a conclusion vs believing her at face value. We need to take this skill and apply it to your two points. A) In abby’s case, your point would be important if she constantly recommends the protein bars when listing easy protein options (which she doesn’t outside of the ad read). Her bias is not crossing over into the content so it doesn’t really track. If she did recommend the protein bars in the middle of the video, we would be more critical of the other protein options she was listing. But since it doesn’t happen, not really a problem. B) I’ll start by saying that data can be manipulated to produce any desired outcome. The scientific community peer reviews everything to weed these studies/bad actors out. But this only applies to third party, independent, or government scientific research. They don’t bother with privatized/commercial science because there is always bias attached so it shouldn’t be taken seriously. IE The egg and dairy industry, has a vested interest in publishing skewed data and studies that favors the company so their studies are dismissed. Manipulating data isn’t a new thing but when scientists are hired by the company they are researching… it’s a huge bias. Third party, independent, or government testing (the fda in this case) do not have the same biases or financial ties so what they publish is automatically more reputable and makes it easier to dismiss biases studies. It’s like believing cigarette companies when they publish research that smoking is good for you actually. It’s obviously biased and disproven by third party research. Hope this answered any questions!

I would give Hanna’s advice a solid B-. The advice itself isn’t bad but a lot of the motivation behind them like being afraid of additives and only going to organic restaurants because of the uncertainty of what is in the food is a bit much for me. The diet culture language also needs some work, but overall the sentiments aren’t bad. Like the idea that you can’t ‘hate yourself healthy’ is really powerful and helpful.

*Please hear me out. I absolutely have the best of intentions*. “No one is without bias” absolutely. However I do not think it’s fair to perceive Gregory as being influenced by his biases while everyone else is looked over. Guidance from a non plant-based practitioner which includes animal products in the clients plan IS acting on their biases - Is it not? I do NOT believe that because someone has a doctorate that they are necessarily well informed; however I do know that by encouraging clients to abstain from consuming red meat/eggs etc. is precisely the same as asking them to abstain from cigarettes as the above is Group 1 AND 2 carcinogens (IARC, 2020). “cherry picking the data presented, discussing the risks of animal product consumption”- evidence is not supposed to be biased. 2021 research has shown that despite being a source of protein and vitamins, heme iron from animal sources contribute to tumorigenesis”; there are alternatives which provide the same benefits without the risks. This is what EVERY. SINGLE. Practitioner should be providing. I feel the same would be applicable to the practitioner who is strongly against sugar or any processed foods. Im basically saying everyone may have their biases; so everyone is acting on them - what is natural to you (eating animals) is simply the norm, so that which opposes it will of course stand out. Consuming animals and byproducts is so engrained that it isn’t even recognized as a bias, when it 100% is. I’ve tried writing in a somewhat academic way and get my point across. Please don’t be upset with me I promise I mean well.

This is a good point! People who eat and encourage eating animal products have a bias toward eating animals just as people who avoid and discourage animal products have a bias too. However, someone from the alternative world, like an ND, who can have their BSc and MPH then ND might not see the approach of a RD as “credible”. I really appreciate your point that you made. If anyone gets upset about the comment, that’s on them.. not you.

Dr. Greger also addresses his own bias (in the introduction to How Not to Die), writing that he's tried to fairly present the research without allowing his bias as an animal lover to interfere. The hypocrisy of Dr. Greger being criticized for profiting from his books, something he does not do, on a monetized channel which profits by the criticism is a bit much.

I'm currently in the middle of an intuitive eating journey. I have been undereating for years and first dropped 15 pounds, then gained 60. I gotta occasionally do some mechanical eating but my appetite is coming back, I have energy to do things I love again, and I'm hoping my set point weight will drop once I've gotten my body out of starvation mode (but I'm staying off the scale for a while so I don't worry about that while I'm working on fixing my metabolism/diet habits). I find that a hunger crushing combo is great for when I really don't feel like eating but know that I need to. Thank you for the guidance, education, and resources.

Whilst I love these videos I have to say I like watching Hannah and Sophie. There has to be a point a diet is not victim to criticism. A proper plant based diet and exercising at your own pace is healthy bottom line. We need to stop creating video of things people didn't say because they are not perfect. You are defaming their good advice and approach to improve your channel. I think people are much better off creating their own video based on conducting research not trying to improve someone else's.

When pursuing any new diet it’s so important to consult with a dietitian. It’s safer and to me yields results. My friend is a dietitian and I always run things by her. If I was trying to pursue fat loss I consulted her and she was non judgmental and calculated my target calorie intake. When I needed to gain muscle (booty gains) and had a hard time she went over what I had to do and what I should eat. It really helps with results rather just googling or seeing others achieve results by following x diet. I love Hannah adhkins she’s inspired me to eat more vegetables.

@@AbbeysKitchen I was coming here to say the same thing! I actually recently read both of this books - all of his books and website proceeds go to charity, which is why I think he's so well revered within the plant-based community. He never endorses any products for money. I agree that he likely cherry picks somewhat, as at this point, his bias is very much towards plant-based eating (a bias based on years of expertise and research, but a bias nonetheless). I have to be honest - as a fan of your channel that genuinely appreciates much of your content - I was pretty disappointed by this mischaracterization. Not only is it not accurate, but it is kind of cringy to hear coming from you, when you do accept for-profit endorsements. I'm not at all against doing this - it's amazing that you've built this business! But, I'd just be extra careful about throwing stones in glass houses, ya know? If you're ever planning to do a full review of Dr. Greger, one area you might want to explore is how his teachings have led to what seems to be an orthorexic mindset amongst some of his hard core fans. Some of his anecdotes in his book about people eating crazy extreme things because he said xyz food was good for you is a little nuts. There's an extremeness there that doesn't feel healthy. Just a suggestion. (& edited for clarity)

Hey abbey you probably won't see this but watching your videos really help me curb my unhealthy eating hobbits. I used to comfort/stress eat a lot and i didn't feel like i had much control over it. So i tried a bunch of diets and I would obviously swing back to over eating because i felt bad after doing the diet. One day i watched one of your videos where you said ' don't take things away from your diet, just add more healthy things'. This helped me massively and i learned to let go from feeling guilty when i comfort ate and focused on enjoying myself when making healthy meals. I also realised that comfort eating was my coping mechanism to stress. Comfort eating was never the problem, it was the stress in my life. Comfort eating was actually keeping me a float and was the only way to make me feel better through the stress in my life. So i decided i wouldn't try to replace comfort eating i would just add some more healthier coping mechanisms to my routine, just like you suggested 'don't take away, just add more'. So i started dancing and journaling when i felt stressed as well as comfort eating. Slowly over time i comfort ate less and less while never having to restrict myself. Eventually i stopped entirely and have replaced comfort eating completing with more helpful coping mechanisms. Its been a whole year now that i have stopped comfort eating and i really feel like the change is permanent. Now i can eat junk food and enjoy it as a treat and never feel guilty or shame for doing it. Anyway thankyou so much for helping. I feel like so much food/diet influences are focused on what is good for you physically but don't think how important it is to consider our mind and our emotions when we try to change habits. We really have to take care of our mind if we want to create lasting and healthy habits. Anyways thank you and have a good day!!

I appreciate you talking about the nuances involved with ‘listening to your body’. I, for example, have always had a pretty extreme appetite. I was always up for a meal, and even when I wasn’t eating, i was planning meals in my head or thinking about foods i wanted to try. This was probably not the healthiest relationship with food, but I think a big part of it had to do with my brain chemistry. Recently, for unrelated reasons, i have sought out treatment for my ADHD. Since starting medication, I’ve noticed food has not been on my mind as much. It is important to point out that a common side effect of many ADHD medications is loss of appetite, but I also believe it has something to do with the way the natural reward system in my brain works. In ADHD, you often don’t get that hit of dopamine after accomplishing a task. It can make doing things you don’t want to do feel very grueling and unrewarding. This is why many people with ADHD like to do things that inherently feel good, and for me that was eating. Food was one of the guaranteed ways to get that dopamine my brain craved, and now that I can get it from completing normal tasks the way a neurotypical person would, those obsessive thoughts are not as pervasive. However, this has significantly changed my relationship with food. While I used to always look forward to meal time, the side effect of appetite suppression I mentioned earlier can lead me to missing meals entirely because I don’t feel hungry and simply didn’t realize it was time to eat. This makes intuitive eating quite difficult. I have taken to setting reminders at meal times, but even if I do remember, not feeling hungry can make it hard to choose which foods will feel good to your body. I am still navigating my hunger cues and my approach to nutrition, but I find that your videos really help me to find balanced meals that feel good.

The thing that annoys me is all this obsession with 'Ultra-processed foods'. I watched a documentary on the BBC and it lumped in oven chips with McDonalds implying that they are equally as bad because they are 'Ultra processed'. Not only is this quite flawed logic but it's quite classist. Some people don't have the time to cook a meal every single day and so may rely on these supposedly bad 'ultra-processed foods' because that's all they can afford and have time to make. You can't compare say oven chips and Quorn chicken nuggets and claim they are just as bad for you as a meal at mcdonalds.

Some people (like myself) have a limited income. However, there are many foods that are affordable and minimally processed. Some people feel that if you are poor, processed foods are the only option you have and that's not true. Also, whole foods are a healthier option than many things on the shelf sitting there for months. Not having the money to afford some things doesn't make it any less true. We should educate people on finding healthier but cheap alternatives, rather than give up.

@@mendingwall3823 I have limited income but I also have limited time (Like many people). I eat what a lot of people would refer to as "Ultra-processed foods" like Veggie fingers, Oven chips, and Veggie mock meats (Mainly Quorn). The problem is when we equate Health to simply the amount food is processed and not on the actual nutritional value and Satiety of the food. Also if you are buying frozen (Which if you have a limited income i would recommend) Food lasts a lot longer and so it doesn't really matter that it's "Sitting on the shelf for months". It's completely fearmongering to imply that the only way a person can be healthy is to eat a whole foods diet and is nearly impossible for anyone who relies on food banks or Works very long hours.

@@jenblack98 I have limited time as well. Working for child protection services, i could work anywhere between 40 and 60+ hours a week, sometimes doing removals into 4 in the morning , and having to be at court by 8 am with hardly any sleep. Civil servants don't make good money and in nyc rent is sky high. I have room mates to get by. That along with other responsibilities. That makes it more difficult, but i refuse to believe that obstacles can't be overcome. Often I see people talk about lack of money and time with a defeatist mindset. I dont mean to argue, but I disagree that people don't have any other choice. I know people who have limited time due to 2 jobs, limited income and several kids who manage. Of course everyone is different but limited time or money doesn't mean you are stuck with "ultra processed food". People make these excuses all the time, yet there are people living in terrible conditions who make other choices. Sitting on the shelf for months is not fear mongering. Nutrients do degrade over time. Freezing can help preserve but eventually things will deteriorate. There is only so much time that can pass before it goes bad. If a person cant find fresher, less processed options, like in food deserts, of course they have to make due the best they can. That doesn't mean we deny facts and say that things on the shelf are as healthy as whole minimally processed foods. Things do have different nutritional value Dont get me wrong, many things we eat are processed to some degree. Also, Im not saying it is impossible to be healthy by eating processed foods. I'm saying certain types of foods have more nutritional value than others. We can't deny facts. I would rather brainstorm ideas on cooking healthier food for less money and time than to resign ourselves to a life of over processed foods. I understand that not everything fresh is perfect, and processed is not automatically terrible, that doesn't mean there isn't a difference in nutritional value. Ultra processed foods usually have higher preservatives, artificial colors, additives fat, sodium and can increase a risk of health problems in comparison to less processed foods. According to Harvard University Depending on the degree of processing, many nutrients can be destroyed or removed. Peeling outer layers of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may remove plant nutrients (phytochemicals) and fiber. Heating or drying foods can destroy certain vitamins and minerals. Although food manufacturers can add back some of the nutrients lost, it is impossible to recreate the food in its original form. Some foods are highly processed or ultra-processed. They most likely have many added ingredients such as sugar, salt, fat, and artificial colors or preservatives. Ultra-processed foods are made mostly from substances extracted from foods, such as fats, starches, added sugars, and hydrogenated fats. They may also contain additives like artificial colors and flavors or stabilizers. Those who consumed more ultra-processed foods had higher risks of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease. I live in one of the most expensive cities in the u.s.(nyc) and in one of the most impoverished areas. Most of my money goes to bills. But I buy cheap things like bananas, rice, beans, buy meat in bulk, check around neighborhood groceries for deals, buy fruit that is riper , look at the cheap and healthy subreddit, ask around, meal prep more than one meal at once to save time, to name a few. Where there's a will there's a way

@@mendingwall3823 The issue is that the category of "Ultra-processed foods" is extremely broad. For example, any meat alternative is considered "Ultra-processed" whereas the meat version is considered only "Processed" which doesn't make any sense. How is Beef mince inherently healthier than Soy mince simply because you decided that the latter was "Ultra-processed". I live in the UK so things are quite different for me (I also have IBS so that makes a lot of whole foods a no-go for me ) but Simply put fresh food is getting much more expensive thanks to Brexit (Britain left the European Union) and Covid. We have been having food shortages for quite a while now and many experts are saying that these shortages may be permanent. Bulk buying is a privilege that many people can't afford. A high amount of people in the UK are reliant on food banks that have to contain Ultra-processed foods because that is the only way they will be able to store them. It is fearmongering to say that their diet is inherently unhealthy because Someone has deemed the food to be "Ultra-processed". I repeat: What does ultra-processed actually mean and how can we claim that everything in this category is equally as bad for you simply because it is "Ultra-processed".

Not one to comment on sponsers but medical 'sponsers' feel more suspect especially influencers being paid for them. Perhaps next time you could donate the income being brought in by the ad to charities for people who do not have access to medical help.
