The basic difference is the time period. The IAS SDM has to spend near about 3 years to become ADM(ADDITIONAL DISTRICT MAGISTRATE) where as the pcs SDM needs more than 8-10 years.

Lekin maine suna hai ki pcs 7 saal mai promote ker diya jata hai or ias ko tabhi HDM banaya jata hai jab tak DM ki post khali na ho or jaisey he DM ki post Khali hoti hai to jo ias hai ussey DM bana diya jata hai.

Aisa kuch nahi hai.....ias bahut bade mahanagaron me SDM bante hain jabki chhoti jagah me ADM Bante hain jo SDM se upar hota hai......AUR 5-6 SAAL ME pakke taur par DM BAN JATE hain...... Jabki PCS sdm 15-20 saal tak wait karte hain fir ADM aur uske baad UPSC me interview hota hai tab jaake IAS bante hain jis se DM ki post milti hai.....
