The important thing to remember is that the force required to move the wheels separately is dynamic, because when torque is applied from the drive shaft the spider gears will try to spread apart increasing pressure to the clutch packs.

@@AustinCoulson even thought the spring pushes the spider gears together; the spider gears must be able to separate from each-other more than in a standard differential. If that's so; the gears would wear out faster, from not always being at the optimal distance from each-other.

More resistance to the torque (friction) means the clutch pack on that side is more compressed (locked) by the separating force introduced by the driveshaft gear. It's very clever.

Which makes sense, but wouldn’t it be better to have a system that provides force at lower speeds as well? Like if you’re trying to get up to speed from park with one wheel on ice, wouldn’t you want to have more force applied to the clutch packs since there will be greater friction at lower speeds?

Great to see a real measurement done live like this. As others pointed out, the clutch torque increases as the ratio of torques coming in from the wheels (from brakes or road reaction torques) climb. What you were really measuring there was the preload torque, the minimum locking torque the diff will provide. Very cool to see, thanks!

Limited slips carriers have a ramp like cam action to place even more squeezing pressure to either side of the clutch packs when slip occurs to increase the locking effect. The test you did is still a decent one for determining the overall condition.

You've got an interesting channel, I'll sub and follow along. Quick question about limited slip diff. My 98 Dodge 1500 has a limited slip described on the VIN and build sheet, and I'm the original owner. However wheels move opposite when I spin them on a lift, and when I remove the pumpkin it looks like a normal diff, no obvious slip plates or springs, no tag. The dealer repair manual is a little confusing, not sure which diff I have. Is it a safe bet the build sheet was wrong, after all?

Brilliant demo. They say that to easily tell a limited slip you lift the vehicle, spin one tire and watch what the other does. If LSD, the other tire rotates the 'same' way (both trying to drive forward), if conventional it moves opposite because the transmission in park resists transfer of energy to the prop shaft. Makes sense. However I was surprised to see that in my Dodge Ram, with a build sheet describing an LSD, the tires move opposite to each other. I had the diff cover off and didn't see clutch plates, but evidently in the Ram they can be hard to see. Do you think the build sheet is wrong? Have you seen limited slip differentials that don't follow that classic rule?
@AustinCoulson
@AustinCoulson 4 жыл бұрын
If you jack up the rear and it's an open diff, you are correct that you can easily spin one tire and the other goes in the opposite direction. It gets trickier of it's a LSD because there are many types and they can be worn or broken. A GM Gov-loc relies on a little clip that commonly breaks so they can appear open but in fact have a broken clip floating around in the oil waiting to break stuff. If it's a stock Ford limited slip, they can break away under as little as 5lbs of force so they can appear to be open when it's a weak LSD. I test it in neutral as a weak LSD should still have more grip than a neutral driveshaft. I'm unsure on the Dodges, but I think they commonly used Dana axles and I don't know what LSD they would have got. It will be easy to tell if you open up the diff and take a look. Will give you an excuse to change the often neglected fluid. Just make sure if you do that and it has an LSD then make sure what fluid it required. Some require a friction modifier.

@AustinCoulson
@AustinCoulson 2 жыл бұрын
Good questions; the 40 lb ft is required to break the axle shafts free of eachother, like when you make a turn and the outside tire spins faster than the inside tire. The LSDs on the Dana 44 has the same function of trying to keep the axles connected, but there are a ton of different style LSDs that came in Dana 44's over the years s and they all attempt to accomplish the same thing different ways. I have a video where I install a limited slip in a Ford 9 inch and one where I install a Spartan locker in a Ford 8.8 if you want to see other styles.

Different tire sizes will destroy a locker quite fast, limited slip diffs can handle different sized tires for a while but it can wear them out limiting their effectiveness later and an open diff will do just fine with tires of different sizes

I found my way here after I did some thinking after watching videos of people starting a car by jacking up a wheel, winding a rope around the wheel and pulling the rope to start the car. In top gear (1 to 1) and 4 to 1 diff, if the diff was welded locked, the motor would need to turn 4 times for every time the wheel is turned. But with an open diff, the motor would only need to turn 2 times for every time the jacked wheel turns which would make it easier. But with a limited slip diff it is more complicated and I don't know if 1 wheel or both wheels would need to be jacked up.

WOW! Is that one of those Factory Five Work benches back there? I converted a 2004 Chevrolet Express 3500 shuttle bus into a camper. I will be using in snow, beach sand and desert sand. I was in snow last week and the right wheels sunk of the road into a snow bank and the right tires just spun and they are all I had to get myself out. Those Stupid left ones just sat there and laughed at me. So, if I want good traction in those conditions, I would need a differential that would switch to the tires with the better traction but I know for a fact I don't want the axles to lock because if they are both spinning, the vehicle will just slide off the road as neither side has tires in control. I always want one side rolling while the other is digging in. So what type do I need? What is it called? Limited Slip or Posi traction or what? Thanks!
@AustinCoulson
@AustinCoulson 3 жыл бұрын
Any limited slip will get you what you need, you'll just want to stay away from a full locker. Your cheapest bet would be to source a factory limited slip gm axle from a junk yard and swap the entire axle. If you are careful enough, you may be able to find one with a better gear ratio for your rig as well. If you are installing an aftermarket one, the auburn or eaton units are very nice, but you will need to pull the entire carrier out so it's a decent amount of work. I did a how-to on installing gears and a limited slip in a ford 9-inch about a year ago if you scroll back through my vids you can give it a look and see if you are up to the challenge.

That torque number is a great way to start. At first glance 40# seems small. So I would say use that number anyway. So if the rack pinion gear set is 4.11 to the rear wheels than the actual resistance at the driveshaft is the inverse at .2433 so>>>40/.2133=164 ft LBS @driveshaft. Likely more to it than that. Comments please.
@snrrub
@snrrub Жыл бұрын
The torque required to overcome the friction of the clutch packs isn't constant, it's related to how much torque is applied at the driveshaft. So this 40 ft-lb is actually the minimum required when the torque a the shaft is zero. As shaft torque increases, an axial force transmitted through the spider gears in the diff squeeze the clutches together and increase the axle torque required to break them free.
