Welcome to Wealthy’s Official KZbin Channel. In this explainer series, we talk about PMS vs AIF. Portfolio Management Services (PMS) are those services that are provided to high net worth individuals. The minimum ticket size to invest through PMS is Rs 50 lakh. While investing through PMS, an investor gets an experienced fund manager who invests in the market on behalf of an investor and aims to generate returns on the investment. Generally, PMS functions in two ways: Discretionary PMS and Non-Discretionary PMS. In Discretionary PMS, fund manager deploys the money of an investor as per his understanding and market conditions. Whereas an investor tracks the performance of an investment. In Non-Discretionary PMS, the final decision regarding investments is left to the investor. On the other hand, Alternative Investment Funds (AIF) are where money is pooled from ample of investors and then the money is invested in different categories. There are generally 3 types of AIF. Category 1 is where the money is invested in startups, social ventures, angel equity, etc. Category 2 is where the money is invested in debt instruments, fund of funds, etc. Category 3 is where the money is invested in products that yield short term returns like hedge funds, private equity, etc. AIF generally has a lock in period of 3-5 years especially in Category 1 and Category 2.
