Today we play golf with pro Mo and we learn the difference between a pro and a low handicap tee shots and how wrong they can go vs how good they could be. Of course, Pro Mo is a Pro and trains full time.
How to be a scratch golfer? You have to practice like a pro. you have to dedicate hours to your game. And even then you are far from a pro. Mo has been training for years and has worked on his body dedicated for 2.5 years. This is a real job. Anyone claiming their job is a real job and his job is not a real job does not know the dedication needed without a boss to tell you what to do. Making spreadsheets at a mega corporation is a way to make money. It's no more real than hours in the sun, pushing weights, cardio, hitting balls, all for a tiny percent chance at a payoff. Scratch golf is easy compard to pro golf. let's not glorify a scratch player. The scratch player can still shoot a 88, I have seen it. A two, three or four handicap averages between 77 and 80 shots. The difference is so vast. This is the real deal. Mo is a beast. Of the East. He puts the Thigh into Thighland.

So funny hearing you guys talk about the mid-round deuce. When I was a kid, I remember my dad coming home from a round saying, "Lost another towel today. I was too far from the clubhouse, had to go in the woods." This would happen more fairly often. Eventually, I asked him why he didn't keep some TP in his bag. He was like, "Ya know, that's a good idea!" LOL! Fuckin love that guy.

Loved this video. The banter between you and Mo is brilliant. Really hits home the social side of golf and how it can still be enjoyable with a friend. I have been struggling alot with hooking the ball, driver being the worst. I have been working on my ailments with lessons from our club pro. It has been very helpful, but at 40 years of age, I am under no illusion, it takes yourself to make the difference. Do the homework at the range, regularly. I have removed my driver from my bag. Instant success. Keep it Sidekick. You are a breath of fresh air in the world of golf.

My burning question is: what do you recommend trying to work on consistency? I find that around half the time I can get a good strike on the ball and the other half I’m topping or chunking. Not entirely sure why. I’ve tried keeping my head level, changing where I’m standing in relation to the ball, everything I can think of but so far, no dice. On another note, love all of your videos and since I started watching I’ve seen a lot of improvement in my short game thanks to the positive mentality you present in your videos. I try to carry that attitude onto the course and it definitely saves me on the greens xD

I have spent the last 2 years trying to create a good ball strike. Here is what i did. -I shortened my driver, woods and irons by 1/2 inch. -Focus on your grip. I set my grip holding every club up in the air. The grip set up helped alot. -Try not to force the irons to hit the ball. Think instead that the irons will sweep under the ball between it and the ground. -Try a 3/4 swing and power thru the downswing. I can get enouh power generated to hit my 49 degree gap wedge about 100 yds. -Change to a fresh glove at the turn.

Playa just practice the game inside PW range. Pitch, chip, punch,bunker, putting. You will begin to be addicted to the sound of the ball hitting the bottom of the cup. You will begin to find the sweet spot with the chipping. If you do not improve after practicing and if during practice, you cannot execute the shots no matter what you try, then you should get a lesson. Self-diagnosing and implementing 'fixes' is usually never correct so I would seek outside help if the above doesn't fix you.

Good to see you back in Thailand with Pro Mo (Although the US trip was also amazing!) My burning question is how do you control nerves on competition days? When I stroll around the course on my own Im hitting most shots really well. Get me in a club comp with people I don’t know and Im hitting crazy chunks or shanks onto the previous green! (Yes that happened yesterday) It’s like I forget how to hit the ball!
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 2 жыл бұрын
You will be nervous no matter what. Find that one shot off the first tee that you know you can jam. Imagine it on the range or in your solo rounds. Imagine the pressure. Then you need to get into your process your always use. You probably add some Major importance to every shot you don’t normally do when actually they are as innocuous as every shot you play in a solo round. It’s just a normal golf shot. Stay in the moment and remember your process

at 9.30 driver is always the safe play with a cut. the worst miss is in some trees with not bad rough and you cover most of the water. over pull/hook a 3w it's splash time. most pro's use 3 wood as a second driver now for holes you want to draw it. if there was no water go ahead play a draw, it's a game of misses though

Putt on a 3 foot steel ruler at home Swing a club in the yard every day for 20 swings, clipping the grass Practice the chipping motion on the rug in the house or office Most important, visualize deeply every couple days in a relaxed place, maybe before bed, see yourself hitting good shots and making putts. I don't really think you should expect anything. Lose all expectation but do the htings above and you will surprise yourself with a low 80s this season on top of some practice you say you can. get If you only do one thing, do the visualization sincerely

As a high handicapper looking to improve, I realize learning carry distance of every club and practicing short game twice as much as full shots is paramount. I just don’t trust the numbers from an affordable portable llaunch monitor and I can’t afford 2000 - 11000 for a bushnell skytrack etc…
@GolfSidekick

Hey brother bear Go rent a Skytrak or Trackman session in a bay for 1-2 hours. It will be worth the time. DO NOT rush. One shot per 20 seconds run through the bag. You will have great info from that. The real world option is to get a GPS watch and use it for 30 rounds. This may be the best option there is. They are highly accurate and keep the stats you need automaticaly in the Garmins. www.golfsidekick.com/distance-finder/garmin-s40-review/ The other option is to use a rangefinder to shoot back to the tee after your drive. Find a tree or sign or something in line with the tee. Shoot back On approaches, shoot to the pin and see where the ball ends up relative to that distance you KNOW to be true. But be honest and also be very vigilant on what your strike was like. Good strike 135 carry, mediocre strike I was short at 124. You now have a range of 10 yards you can use for future.

Great video as always, Matt! My burning question is: what can I do to get my driver shot lower? I have by far the highest club head speed in my group, and one of the shortest off the tee. My driver flies straight up like a 9 iron and spins in the wind. It is a straight slice almost every time. I can hit my 5 wood 230-240 off the deck, but I hit driver 215 off the tee. It is killing my game. Help me Dr. Matt!

Lower loft Stiffer shaft Stop early release Many things. You would need to see a fitter who is also a great pro. He could give you 3 tips while fitting you, and those tips will help him fit you for the right loft and shaft. Someoe like Eric in my lesson videos. If you can hit 5 wood 230-240, but driver short, you have got into your own head a lot and probably need to be ironed out with a good fitter/pro lesson/fitting.

to add on what Matt said (which is obviously correct), there's a few things that you might be doing. Almost certainly doing a couple of these, very possibly a combination of all of them: 1. out-to-in swing path ("over the top") 2. open club face 3. hitting the ball close to the heel of the club 4. hitting the ball low on the club face 5. downward angle of attack I'd be willing to bet quite a bit that 1 and 2 are true (super common with longer clubs, even if you hit your irons pure, and they're the main reason someone would hit a spinny slice), probably 3 as well...and even 4 is pretty likely. 5 could also make sense if the shots are starting low but then end up high because of the crazy high spin. All of those will generally result in a spinny shot, and with your club head speed and the info you gave, you're probably spinning your driver A LOT. Assuming your 5 wood is a typical loft, you probably have the speed to be hitting your driver more like 275-300 yards. Like Matt said, a good fitter or teaching pro could help diagnose. I'd think some of the above is what they'll find. If you can get access to GCQuad, Trackman, or another device that can feed you swing stats, you could see if some of those are true. Since you seem to know your club head speed, maybe you do have access to something that can give you those stats. That's just the diagnosis, and I'm not nearly good enough to provide a fix - you're almost definitely a better golfer than me anyway. But if you find that some of those are true, it can help you start looking into ways to remedy the driver swing. My guess? Work on ways to get your driver swing a bit more "from the inside." Make sure you're hitting up on the ball, and making contact in the center or slightly above the center of the face. Do you keep the ball a bit too close to your feet? Maybe move it an inch or two further away and see if that helps you hit it less on the heel and naturally makes your swing a bit less out-to-in.
