Bourbon is made from a grain mash that contains at least 51% corn, while Scotch whiskeys are typically made from malted grains.

Yes and no. If a distillery in Scotland made a 51% corn spirit and put it in a virgin oak casks for at least 3 years it is classed as scotch but couldn't call itself bourbon. It could be called Scotch grain whisky or bourbon style whisky.
@jakeadair1642 Жыл бұрын
There are some companies that make mixed whiskies. For example, the Bourye whiskey by High West is a blend of Bourbon and Rye, which give it both a sweet and malty taste...

It is widely believed that during the 19th century, Ireland's distillers began to use the 'e' as a way to differentiate their whiskeys from Scotch.
@drrd4127 Жыл бұрын
@@samuelb2375 actually, you are wrong! Whisky comes from the SCOTTISH pronunciation of the Gaelic word Wish-ca-bah The Irish pronunciation is Oosh-ca-bah The Scottish abbreviated it to wishkie and then anglocised the pronunciation to Whisky. So yeah!

Bourbon must age (by law) in new oak casks ... Whisky must age in used oak casks which can be helding bourbon :-)

That's not quite true if referring to scotch. Virgin oak barrels can be used. But you are right about most scotch distillers using ex bourbon casks. Sherry casks are also commonly used.

Buffalo Trace is great if you can find it. Bulleit Rye and Woodford Reserve are great "cheap" alternatives that will satisfy just about anyone. My recommendation is to ask your local liquor store for a local option - though it might not be the "best" bourbon you are supporting the local economy and everyone likes something local.

Misconception. That used to be true but is no longer. The congress passed a resolution that US whiskey can be called bourbon if it’s 51% corn. It’s was to give non Kentucky bourbons a fair shot on the international market. Jack Daniel technically is a bourbon but they prefer to market themselves as “Tennessee sour mash whiskey”
