Love that you showed the difference between bobo, little lime and lime light hydrenga. I have 4 lime lights, 3 strawberry vanilla standards, an Anne belle, a tuff stuff, and 3 endless summers already however I just planted 6 bobo, 4 little lime, 4 quick fire tidbits and 3 more lime lights and now know what to except in the next few years from the boho and little lime. Im so happy i found your channel. I too am in Ontario(zone 7a) and just bought my very first hydrangea standard for our landscaping. We had to replace a tree that died, and i had always wanted a hydrangea tree. I bought my parents a limelight standard tree, 6 years ago, and watched how beautiful it has become. Hi Nikki...you made a great choice with the LL standard. Phantom standards are also beautiful as their blooms don't get too heavy and floppy. Phantom also blooms earlier than LL so you'll get to enjoy their blooms a little earlier too! Happy gardening!

Now I'm rethinking replacing my sadly split PeeGee standard with a row of smaller hydrangeas in front of my front-yard patio. Of these three, I'm leaning towards 'Little Lime' because I want something that "arrives" in August to honor my late BIL (tomorrow would be his 67th birthday). Maybe 'Pinky Winky' would be a suitable choice. Or 'Zinfindoll'. I don't have either of those. I love hydrangeas!

Do you supplement your initial planting soil with anything and how, and with what is a good fertilizer? I have never had hydrangea before and can't seem to find much on that issue. Hi Eileen, Thank you so much 😊 My soil had a lot of compost mixed in every spring and fall so I don’t usually supplement the soil during planting. If your soil is in poor condition, I would recommend you rake in compost before planting. I also don’t fertilizer my hydrangeas as they are not heavy feeders like roses & clematis. Of all my perennials, roses and clematis are the only two plants that I give fertilizers every spring and again after the first flush. What I do give hydrangeas every spring is a cup or two compost (depending on the size of the plant)….overfeeding hydrangeas will prevent them from blooming….this why some wonder why their hydrangeas don’t bloom. If you have very alkaline soil then you may be able to feed them with a little bit of garden sulfur which you can buy from big box stores. Hope that helps & happy hydrangea gardening. 💚🪴💚

P.S. I decided on the BoBo and the Little Lime. The Limelight is too big for my yard, I think. I have limited space, and I need to save some room for 2 new raised garden vegetable beds. Should I fertilize them when I plant them? Or should I wait? They will both be in sun/shade facing west under a Redbud tree, I think. Make sense? If not, I can put them on the side of the house facing South, but partially shaded by the house next door, which is close -- sort of like it appears to be in your neighborhood.

What zone are you in? In our zone 5/6, west or south facing will be perfect for panicle hydrangeas. No, don’t fertilize hydrangeas at time of planting…most cans already come with a lot slow release fertilizers growers give them in the spring. You just need to put a little bit of compost on the bottom of the hole and back fill with an tube soil.

I have all three and Little Lime is my favorite. In the right growing conditions, they can get pretty sizeable, but are still limited to a certain height and width. Limelight can get very big, which might not work in a lot of situations. Bobo is great too, but are pretty small, and I just like the blooms of Little Lime better. Another great compact panicle hydrangea is the Little Quickfire. Much different looking blooms than the previous three, plus has much better looking foliage. Somewhere between Little Lime and Bobo in terms of size.

Thank you 🙏 Trina. Zone 9 may be warmer than what hydrangeas prefer…yes, I think you can plant them in any location that get mostly shade and only morning sun. Containers would work as you can easily move the containers into shady spots when needed. However, you may have to water more often as the soil reservoir is smaller. Hope you can plant some to enjoy. 🙏💚🙏

All the hydrangeas are in full sun all day long. The front bed is south facing and the plants along the back fence also gets full sun in our north facing garden. It looked shadier because I do most of my gardening in the later afternoon or evening (6-9 pm). Thank you Hai! 💚🙏🪴

Hi Kimho, I think you may have a "lacecap" variety that have the infertile florets and the fertile blooms (these don't open up). Do you have the original tags to look up the name? Or you can plant varieties that you like from my garden...there are many varieties to choose from. All the best!

I got a Little Lime punch last year…based on the stats from Proven Winners, it sounds very promising but it didn’t bloom for me last year so I couldn’t tell how the blooms would look. Between the Little Lime and Little Lime Punch, I would plant the latter…the LL Punch. 💚💚💚

Norther Illinois is zone 5-6? LL will do well in a sunnier spot with full sun - I would just make sure it gets plenty of water to keep it well hydrated during the warmer 90+F summer days….if you have drips - I would run 2-3 drips of 2gal/hr and run it very 2-3 days for 30 mins. Happy gardening 🙏💚🪴

Thank you Helen. 💚🪴🙏 The chlorosis I have on some of the hydrangeas is due to the roots of the plant being “unhealthy”. If it’s a pH problem - I treat the soil with a tbsp of garden sulfur. I also add a handful of used coffee ground to help the material decompose and work itself slowly in - this combo makes the soil slightly acidic (our native soil is alkaline). So far that has worked well for me….next year, if things don’t improve then I will definitely have to try something more aggressive. As for fertilizers, I don’t give them good other than compost in the form of used coffee grounds or leaf compost. Have a wonderful day to you Helen.

Hi 👋 I normally give each hydrangea 1-2 cups of compost in the spring. Other than that they don’t get any other fertilizer. If you don’t give compost and want to feed it fertilizers, I would recommend to give each plant a handful (or less depending on size and maturity) of slow release Rose fertilizer or something like a general slow release fertilizer: 10-10-10. It’s important to remember- Hydrangeas don’t do well with too much fertilizers….so less fertilizer is better for them. Happy gardening!

It may get up to 4-5 ft tall! My Bobo in the front have stayed within 2 ft tall and wide…due to all the dieback I get from our snow pile. The Bobos in the back are taller closer to 3ft.

Yes, Little Lime is hardy to zone 3. For extra added protection, you can give it a 3-4” inches of extra compost or mulch just before the first frost and spread it out in the spring. 💚

Yes, I have many vases of dried hydrangeas in the house. I did a video on making dried Vanilla Strawberry blooms last season on the channel. 💚🪴💚

It's easy and you can do so much with the dried flowers. A small amount of water in a vase or jar after you cut your hydrangeas (just enough for a day or so. Maybe an inch). Set them in your container for a wk or so and they should dry on their own. I'd wait until they've started to change color and not new blooms before I try to dry them out or cut them from my shrubs for sure. I make wreaths of nothing but hydrangeas, have them in arrangements all over my home and use them on my Christmas trees, dotted all over the tree. I've spray paint them sometimes and sometimes leave them natural. I also use my pampas grass plumes in my Christmas trees! There's so many uses you can use the dried flowers for. Good luck

@@TracysHomeGarden The Firelight is gorgeous dried. They turn almost a soft purple! Drying some Little Limes as we speak! It just hit me yesterday that the Little Lime never turns white and the name of Limelight is true to it's name. I must be slow lol

Lol…me too! When the “Little Lime” first came out, I thought it was a “smaller” version of “Limelight”….but looking back, like you, I should have “actually read” the names properly….lol…PW do such a great job naming these two - “Lime” then the “light” (white). Whereas the “little” “lime”…they pretty much stay a “lime” color except for the “smaller” panicle size compared to the Limelight. I’m looking forward to the “punch” of the Little Lime Punch next year. I want to know how “punch” their panicles will get in fall. I definitely agree with your regarding the almost “purple pink” hues on the dried panicle hydrangeas…both on my Firelight & Vanilla Strawberry. 💚🪴💚

On the Limelight, they are not all standards are they? If standards are different is the height and width different?

The Limelight’s I have are all standards….the larger two in ground are 5 years old…and they are 5 ft wide (canopy) and 7 ft tall. They are also constricted by the fence so they may not be as wide as one in an open area. I know my parents has a 10 year old Vanilla Strawberry tree that is about 7 ft wide & tall. So my Limelight may still grow wider.

Is it just us? We are a Philadelphia PA (Zone 7a) landscape company that’s used, among other Hydrangeas, Little Lime and Bobo. For us, Little Lime quickly achieves 6-8 ft and larger. And Bobo, well I’m not sure how large it would get without significantly pruning back in spring, but we’ve noted fast growth (2 years, planted small) to five ft before pruning. Has anyone else had similar experience?

I have also heard of this in warmer zones 6-7….similarly, Lavalamp Flare grows to 5 Ft now for me…the tag says 2-3 ft. I guess, climate has a lot to do with how fast they grow.

Hi Brian, No, I trained all the Limelight trees myself. The two in the back garden were trained 5 years ago. I have one in the planter that was done last year. It is still in the planter but it is now placed at the front garden.

Thank you Sharyn! 💚🪴🙏 I would definitely do some very light trimming (ie. weak and flimsy stems now if they get in the way or break)…otherwise, it’s always best to wait until late winter because we always get some winter kill or broken stems….also, pruning promotes the plant to put out new fresh growth (which is not good for the plant as it prepares to go into winter and any new growth will not do well)…so it is best to do any real pruning just before the spring growth season.

Thankyou that is what I thought but wasn’t quite sure. I bought a limelight tree in the fall of 2019 and only trimmed the flowers off dead headed at the end of fall. Then last year I left the flowers on and didn’t trim at all. It was very pretty in the winter. Then I only trimmed back a couple branches lightly in early spring. The flowers fell off and I still got plenty of new blooms. Barely trimmed it at all. It’s beautiful this year. But I was wondering if I trimmed it more at end of winter if it would get taller. It is only about 5 ft. Tall. I know trees grow taller if you cut major branches off the main one but they look too big to trim off already. I’ll try to trim back a little more at the end of winter. Yours are beautiful. I love mine! I purchased 2 Strawberry Sundae hydrangea bushes and just planted them. They are doing great so far! I think I am getting hooked on hydrangeas 😍 My next purchase I would like to buy a Strawberry Vanilla tree. 🤍💓

Pruning back will definitely encourage longer stems on the panicle hydrangeas…give it a try and you’ll see that the Limelight will soon reach 6-7 ft tall. I had a couple of Strawberry Sundae before and the panicles are dense and fluffy…very pretty as well….as the color was gorgeous in autumn. 💚🪴💚

I Tracy my name is Maxine,I am also new at hydrangeas but I absolutely love them..I tried to grow them years ago but no luck they just never came back..I live in St,Catharines Ontario.Canada ..today it is August 21and just two weeks ago I planted some summer everblooming hydrangeas,already had two planted them last year in may and then I cut them right down didn’t know what I was doing but what a surprise,my neighbour was absolutely amazed because in may this year they were in full bloom and a lot ,should I trim them right down again even the new one ☝️ Help

Hi Maxine, Are they Macrophylla Everlasting or Endless Summer? From the blooming time frame of May, I’m guessing they are one of the above Macrophylla (mophead) hydrangeas. If they are, don’t prune them back….wait until after the last frost day (usually near the end of May) to prune the dead stems back. We were lucky to have had a warm past winter and that was why they bloomed so well for us this past May. The year before that we had such a bad winter that they didn’t bloom for me in Toronto. I do hope this coming winter will be similar to the last for all of us in southern Ontario….otherwise our Macrophylla hydrangeas will have a hard time blooming.
