The 10k + engines were indeed briefly a thing. They were not the ECR engines (at the time, yet.) These were one of the last high profile DEI experimental engine programs. They even tested them out with partner/customer Busch and Truck teams. NASCAR quickly saw the arms race building (due to materials and other ways DEI was achieving this) and implemented a gear rule that all but made the 10k + RPM idea a dead end.

I remember...in 2005 (particularly during impound races), the Dodge teams struggled to acclimatize to the new nose, although it started to come good at the end of the season and into 2006 (particularly with Kahne on intermediate tracks). However, in 2006, Penske (and Petty Enterprises) made the utterly baffling decision to experiment with running the 04 Dodge at intermediates based on Newman's 7th place finish and near win-worthy speed at Homestead 2005 running it (before Dodge stepped in), and as a result Newman and to a lesser extent Kurt Busch struggled uncharacteristically on intermediate tracks (when intermediates were previously Newman's best tracks (especially Charlotte-he looked like he had winning or at least top 5-worthy speed in every race there from 2002 to 2005)). This may have in turn caused the Ryan Newman/Matt Borland driver/crew chief pairing to split and ultimately Newman to leave Penske, while Dodge's subsequent overreaction to its issues (such as changing the Charger nose for 2007, just before the introduction of the CoT) caused Kahne's form to decline and Evernham to basically collapse. Given that above all else success in NASCAR is built on positive feedback loops and that it is no surprise that what made the Jimmie Johnson dynasty possible was that the driver/crew chief pairing of him and Chad Knaus was the only frontrunning one that remained intact from 2006 to 2010, I can't help but wonder would have been if Penske never attempted to run the 04 Dodge in 2006 (based on one good result in the last race of 2005) and instead worked more closely with Evernham to make the Charger nose come good (especially as after 2005 NASCAR would practically no longer run impound races at intermediate tracks, thereby rendering the Charger's biggest weakness irrelevant). If Newman's 2006 had been as good as it logically should have been (based on Kahne's results that year (especially as Newman and Kahne had similar driving styles at the time)), I can't help but think that he would have stayed with Penske and continued with Matt Borland as his crew chief, and that maybe in either 2006 or 2007 the #12 team (and perhaps the #9 team if Dodge did not change its nose AGAIN in 2007) could have legitimately taken at least 1 championship and 5-10 wins away from Jimmie Johnson (especially as the Dodge teams that did figure out the Charger nose subsequently discovered that the Dodge could, at least in clean air, lap 0.1-0.3 seconds faster than the Chevy and 0.2-0.4 faster than the Ford, and only really struggled in dirty air).

The Next Gen Fords definitely have a lower, more growling sound to them. I think it's a bit harder to tell a Chevy from a Toyota though. Look for any video of qualifying or testing at Daytona or Talladega to see if you can tell the difference.

Wasn't based on manufacturer or team really. It was all dependent on what set of headers and pipe configuration for the engine package/tuning. For instance the HMS cars were one of the first to switch up from X to H about 2004/5 on plate tracks because they found for more speed.
