As a former parachute rigger stationed at fort Benning, I never ran into a difficult officer. As a matter of fact, I would classify them as the “go to GI Joe” as most would carry their own equipment, stand at attention to me, and even said “hooah” when I told him to get out of my face. Forgot to mention that this was all during my time as a rigger at airborne school and all the officers were students so their rank meant nothing during their time there and they knew better than to piss off the person that’s packing their chute. 💪🤟😇

The best officers I had to deal with were previously NCO or enlisted. The one's you called a Hybrid. We called the academy grads -" Ring Knockers" because they really wanted you to see their academy ring and know they came from West Point. But I have to admit, I was pretty lucky, 90% of the officers I served with were top notch squared away. RANGERS LEAD THE WAY 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅

I can relate. I started out as a private E-1 BCT and then 11B AIT at Ft Jackson. Went through Infantry OCS and commissioned a Medical Service Corp officer. When I finished Podiatric Medical School, I worked the emergency room at Ft Dix where most of my patients were basic trainees. Having been a trainee once myself, I understood what phase they were in, what their schedule looked like and how an extended profile would affect their training. If the next week was just classroom, it had little to no effect. If they were going to marksmanship range, they could still participate with some modifications. Long marches were out of the question and could be waived. PT was also modified. Class C profile. No running, jumping, stooping or prolonged standing of greater than 30 minutes. In short, I could appreciate their needs better than if I had never been enlisted. My NCOs knew of my past enlisted status and had greater respect for me.

To tell me about the division of responsibility between commissioned officers and NCO's, my father (a WWII vet) asked me this: How does an officer start a field generator? He answered his own question with: He tells the sergeant to get the generator going. As a young officer I learned to honor the hands on, train the soldier work of NCO's, while I worried about employing and taking care of my unit. Thank Heaven for good sergeants.

I served in a different sort of Army. I was a Regular Army enlisted man in the ‘60s when there was a draft. Even though I joined the Army, rather than being drafted, I was a citizen soldier. Not in the Army because I wanted to be, but because I was required to be. Most enlisted were citizen soldiers who were going to serve their terms and then get out and go back to the world. Because of that, I didn’t necessarily buy into the whole officer vs enlisted man thing. It didn’t really make sense to me that I was supposed to snap to attention when a guy with a gold bar walked into the room. That is not to say that most of us didn’t play the game. Most played it well and with honor. We all came in as E-1s. No instant promotions based on schooling. I was a good soldier who made E-5 in less than two years. I took my job seriously and did it well. The Army changed my life for the better and I grew up. But it was never going to be a career for me. So who did I want for an officer? The West Point officers bought into the whole thing and took themselves way too seriously. Those from OCS were a complete coin toss. Some were great and others not. But generally speaking, ROTC officers were the most uniform. You pretty well knew what you were going to get. I’m sorry there is no longer a draft. I think citizen soldiers were good for the Army and the Army was good for them. I believe that a citizenry well leavened with veterans is a very good thing.

In the Swedish Army all officers have to start from the bottom. Same bootcamp as all enlisted soldiers for 3 months, then working E3 to E5 for about 10 months and after that the officers academy for 3 years. There is no option to go straight from civilian college to the officers academy.

Observation: They used to call "hybrid officers" mustangs - and I think there's a mustang association in the army. About ten per cent of officers are mustang - 25 per cent in the Marines. They used to be looked down upon, until the brass recognized their worth in unit cohesion and effectiveness. I think we've had a few that have made Marine Corps Commandant - and probably Army Chief of Staff. Just guessing. I've never served, and having hired a few vets in my time, I think that's something I missed out on. There's an awful lot the armed forces can do for a person.

@@jacko2575 there's always going to be somebody who'll give the rest a bad name - regardless of career field. But it is a risk whether you go green to gold or seaman to admiral. I hope our military tries to address this. When you're chosen for flag rank (and I went to high school with a guy who ended up as a major general in the USAF) you get sent to what they call "charm school" in army slang and "knife and fork school" in air force slang. One of the best things about that socialization process is that they make sure to take you down a peg. As in, "yeah, you made flag rank but there are ten others we could have chosen instead of you, so don't get arrogant".

@@mfisher1952 COL to 1 star is actually 50%, literally a coin flip. Making full bird in some ways is harder than getting a star which is just a numbers game. To be LTC/COL you actually have to distinguish yourself. CPT/MAJ, you just gotta keep showing up and not screw up and you'll get it. Also the all the other 90% of officers look down upon that 10% OCS/prior enlisted/Mustang officers, the major thing propping us back us is that we know we got the support of joes and thats something they hate because a lot of them don't until they earn it.

My father was a reserve officer in the Yugoslav army if you graduated from college before joining the army, the army usually sent you to reserve officer school after 6 months of training he became an NCO/sergeant, and when he finished training 12 months later, he was promoted to second lieutenant during New Year's Eve, he saved the entire company (and a little more) of soldiers from prison If you came back drunk from a night out, detention followed and then punishment after the weekend when the officers returned if you were in the army, you know what the punishments and crappy jobs are in such cases On the way back, he saw groups of drunken soldiers, he ordered them to form a column and they left the village as a column (the barracks was about 1 km from the village) he lined them up and ordered them to put all the wine/brandy bottles on the floor then everyone got a sip of wine, the bottle went around the soldier's until it was empty and they had emptied all the bottles, then he ordered a movement towards the barracks when they arrived at the entrance, he ordered "quick march" when they arrived at the door as a "unit", with the commanding NCO, the guard opened the door and stood in a salute according to protocol, and the duty officer saluted the marching unit everyone escaped the control at the entrance, until the end of his service he was the most popular NCO in the barracks

Hi. I have 2 questions: How long i the "IDF Commanders course", and what is in it ? My guess is it`s something like squad leader but in general NCO & Officer training seems to be way shorter than in other western countries. How big are infantry companies ? I have read that in Israel there are only two platoons in a company and that a Palsar company for example is just about 20 guys. Thanks for your time.
@israteeg752
@israteeg752 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrd7067 Basic and initial advanced infantry training for regular infantry units lasts six months, however palsar and similar units receive additional specialized specific training, so their course lasts a year or more. Following that is a six-month regular service in squads, followed by a three-month IDF squad leader course. Those who excel in squad continue on to officer's course, which for infantry lasts another 6 months. So, in essence , your avarage platoon commander infantry officer would go through all phases above about a year and a half's worth of actual real millitary training and another 6 month regular duty in between . Can't discuss about palsar numbers , sorry. Regular Infantry companies range between 3 - 5 platoons.

I've got an interesting story of a butter bar right out of West Point . He first duty station was as my platoon leader at Fort Stewart Ga. A company 3rd Engineers. Now this was late 70's eary 80's. 2nd Lt. Morris was a good mixture of most of the things in your video. I was his driver on training and our yearly war games; usually about 45 days at Eglin AFB Fla. I drove a Gamma Goat , pre Humvee. At night some of my buddies and I would hang out on the edges of our company area and drink warm beer and smoke , ahem. If needed me for the next days mission, he'd walk up til he got a wiff and say, from a distance...Komar 0400 tomorrow and walk off after hearing Yes Sir. He told me one day as we're driving that loud loud beast, that his nickname at West Point was...Maurice the spaced - out kadet. He give about 40 classic rock records. But he always acted strack. My parents served 28 years in the Marines and the Army together, more so in the Marines from my dad. I’ve always wanted to go into the military. But after high school, my parents said they didn’t want me to live my life the way they had to suffer in the military in the ranks of enlisted. They told me to pursue a degree, which I did. I graduate this month and now i’m hearing all the stigmatism about O1’s. Truly I just want to be the best leader I can be, and I do understand that I can’t be a leader if I don’t understand what people went through or going through. My dad always says to talk to the NCO’s have good relationships with them because they are the inside ear to the enlisted. But he also said I can run into difficult NCO’s. It seems challenging always trying to prove yourself, even if they are enlisted and technically under me, they know more than me. So not only do I need to prove to officers I’m a good fit, also enlisted and show them I can be a fair and understanding leader. I can do it, and truly I’m excited to go in the Army but it feels like I’m going in blindsided.

I understand where your coming from , I was an enlisted before going officer and here’s the best advice I can give you. Your soldiers are people. The NCO’s are people. See them as such and they will respect you because yes, it’s their job, but also you never know what they are going through. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty and get down in the trenches with them. They respect their officers more if they see your not afraid to get in the mud.

Sounds like you’ve got a good understanding, I’m sure you’ll do fine. And I’ve been out for a while but I can’t remember working with any NCOs that I considered particularly ‘difficult’. I did have a one company commander who certainly was… lol. Either way, you’re getting the best leadership training and experience on the planet and I’ll stand behind that claim. You’ll have more leadership experience than 99% of civilians just in your first job. One little tip I’d recommend… when you show up to your unit, go up to your 1SG one on one, as well as SGM, within the first few days or weeks and let them know that you’d appreciate them telling you if you’re stepping on your dick and that you’re open to feedback. 🤙

FYI: as a past company grade officer, I will say this..... while in garrison, the officers let the NCO'S run the day to day operations. Now, in the field, that is the job / mission of the officer. Our duty is to the mission first and the men. I always took the care and welfare of the men in my charge very seriously. Their welfare was my responsibility and did so at every opportunity. When were we in the field or combat style operations, our mission came first. The men in my platoon then later in our company always responded to my orders to the best of their abilities. We had a mutual respect for each other.

That's a collage program called ROTC. You would want to talk to a represenitive at a collage you want to attend about joining the ROTC program for details on that.

As a "hybrid officer" as you called them, I think every officer should be required to serve as no higher than E5 before being eligible for a commission as an officer (even if they have a degree or come from West Point). The skills you learn and the crap you go through while serving as an enlisted soldier or NCO is invaluable.

As an ROTC commissioned officer I can tell you first hand as to the time spent ( several years) before getting said commission. I served as a E1, squad leader, platoon Sgt. Platoon leader, then Company CO while in ROTC. Had to go the the sane basic training program as any enlisted soldier. I went to airborne school while still a cadet. There were only two of us in the entire program while in college. Upon graduation, I received my commission. Then on the Infantry officer badic school, before going overseas in Korea as a platoon leader. It is not just about having a college degree. We all had to earn our stripes.

ROTC: Dear god, deer in headlights, undisciplined or extremely out of shape. Green to Gold or OCS: Depends, for the most part those from OCS were very professional. They were older , far older. Typically late 20s early 30s. NCOs going Officer I've had mixed experience. Some were absolute masters of their profession. Great, instructive etc. Some of the former NCOs were individuals to avoid, their personality and the knowledge of the system made them dangerous to the very individuals under them. Chaplains: For anyone going in, remember that Chaplains have 100% confidentiality. If they break it let people know and take the appropriate steps to ensure the integrity of that profession.

Out of shape ROTC LT? What years?
@johnshepard7630
@johnshepard7630 Ай бұрын
@@Flomo112 Every year, depending on the school. Some schools hold instructors who are there to just retire. Others have more resources to produce very high caliber individuals. But, remember LTs have a bad reputation, the majority come from ROTC. ROTC isn't known for its quality. Which isn't surprising, most are highschool kids with no real life experience. By the time they get promoted a few times they catch up.
