Different Types of Renaissance Masses - How to Tell Each Mass Type Apart

What's the different between a paraphrase mass and a parody mass? There are lots of different types of masses written during the Renaissance and it can be confusing to keep them straight. In this video, I'll explain them all and share an example for each.

A small note on an otherwise fantastic resource: a 'cyclic mass' refers to any mass that contains the 5 movements (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) connected through a unifying device, but this doesn't necessarily mean that it becomes unified through the use of a motto. A cyclic mass, in other words, is a larger category that could potentially include a paraphrase, parody, motto, soggetto cavato, or freely composed mass. Hoping that's not too tedious, just wanted to point out. The video, on the whole, is excellent.

Parody masses are probably my favourite, especially when the source material is already wonderful. The Missa ‘Mille regretz’ by Morales and the Missa ‘Praeter rerum serium’ by de Rore are two of the best in my opinion. It’s no coincidence they are both based on original material by Josquin!

I listened many masses. This give me mind-blowing and pyshodelic feelin. It's more harmony than melody. Sometimes is very rough for listen. Masses have 5 part, but sanctus has 2 part: Sanctus and Benedictus. I love when masses have many voices. Example: robert carver missa dum sacrum mysterium a 10. Thank you for Antoine Brumel - Missa Et ecce terræ motus. This so mind-blowing! I still learn listen this music. It's magnificent, but same time can be very rough for listen. Baroque masses is not too rough for listen in comparation of renaissance masses. (English is not my first language, and I don't know how grammaticly correct is this.)

Right! I wish I had a resource like this! That Taverner is so gorgeous. Did you know that it created a whole sub-genre of English instrumental music called "In Nomines?"

@Keep it Classical the whole In Nomine phenomenon is so interesting and well worth an episode, I think! I find if fascinating that that one snippet from Taverner’s Missa Sine Nomine randomly spawned a whole genre. It will give you a good excuse to delve into the amazing obsession C. Tye had for the form.

7:20 to parody a piece of music should not make anyone believe the composer is less original or “les industrious “. Sometimes the duty of referring to a previous composition while being original at the same time is more of a labour than dealing with 100 % fresh materials

I think missa brevis is short mass. About 20 min.

The congregation is not given "bread and wine", but the body and blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ under the accidents of bread and wine. If you´re talking about a Catholic mistery, at least give the Catholic explanation.
