indeed there are many ways to install software in Linux. I personally use Endeavour OS just because I am no very savvy regarding linux. I have distro -hopped quite a lot, but only Debian or Arch based distros. I would suggest Arch if you are savvy enough and not bothered by the possible issues due to upgrades. IMHO, Arch and Arch based distros (Manjaro not included) (I have used Endeavour OS for an year plus without issues) (but I have used Arch a few years ago before I switched to MX Linux) depending on the distro, I would vouch for Endeavour OS as an end-user with minimal terminal knowleadge... but what that means... it's anyone's guess. anyway, to each his/her's own, anyone may see and understand what i've said here according to their own experience. I thank you for you channel and your efforts to share your Linux experiences. this is most important! thank You!!!

From what I heard about Arch it's not user friendly and it's also a lot different from Ubuntu and Debian based Linux. Because it does not use apt it uses another package manager and also different commands. The same is also with Fedora that uses something else. I have gotten used to what I am using now and it's working very well for me so I don't want to change to something else. Arch is quite hard to learn and more for advanced users. Also it breaks with some updates I have heard. So I am not going to switch to it. I am going to stick with the Ubuntu and Debian based distros because at least I know how they work. Also they are very stable. Debian only users stable packages and Kernels and so does Ubuntu from which a lot of Linux Mint's and other Ubuntu based distros updates come from. So it is better to stay with that rather than Arch or Fedora which also has it's problems. I think both Ubuntu based Linux or Debian is better for new users who are coming over from Windows. Linux Mint I find is the best one of the lot but Debian is also worth trying. If you are looking for something where you want to install your own desktop. There are many choices of desktops you can install in Debian. And Debian also provide long term support. Debian Bookworm will be supported for another 5 years.

@AndreaBorman in my opinion, arch is not that hard to use given the extensive arch wiki that rivals that of the typical man page advice given for debian users. Even most other distros borrow the arch wiki since its really well written. Its rolling release cycle should cause problems in theory, but in reality it doesn't most of the time, as despite having the latest software, the testing repos would have sussed out most of the incompatibilities. As long as you read the Arch news (I use informant package which forces you to read all news before upgrading), most breaking changes or package name changes would be mentioned. Also Arch package manager and release cycle has benefits of being super fast to get new features and bug fixes, which is particularly helpful for patching. As long as you minimize critical packages from the AUR (which is packaged by the community) the chances of incompatibility is low. I have been annoyed by how debian and ubuntu due to how the stable release cycle works would end of life their repos and move it to archived needing me to change my apt repos to a new one. Arch doesn't do that. Neither do I need to add PPAs for non-free packages or edit any of my apt config to enable non-free repos (e.g for Nvidia). To note, rolling release cycle have no need for LTS, installation of the distro lasts forever since the repos are never archived. All I have to care about is mirrors of the packages.

@@derpythecate6842 No Ubuntu does not archive their repositories at the end of their support. Neither does Linux Mint or Debian. Linux Mint 20.3 and all of the Mint 20 versions are supported until 2025. So you can use it until them. After that it is true that there is no more support and you won't get any more updates. So you will either have to upgrade to Mint 21.3 or or do a clean install of it. Linux Mint 21.2 which I using at the moment is supported until 2027. But there is a new release of Mint coming out which is Linux Mint 22. Linux Mint release a new version ever 6 months I think but all of them are LTS versions. Meaning they all have long term support. Debian 11 is still supported I think as I know Debian have a longer term support for their older versions. But it is better to use the latest version which is Debian 12. As 12 now supports non free software and drivers and it also has a long term support date. Debian 12 is supported until 2028 which is quite a long time. As for Arch I don't think I could use that as it is not like Debian or Linux Mint. It is very different. Also I have gotten used to Linux Mint and now Debian. If I use Arch I will have start all over again learning every thing from scratch. What I have heard of Arch it is not very user friendly for new users or new users who are coming over from Windows learning Linux for the first time. At the end of the day I just want a n operating system that works as well as one that I like. I hate Windows 11. Windows is no longer what it used to be and no longer user friendly. But since I have switch to Linux I am finding it much easier to use and manage than what Windows 8 (which was what I was using before) ever was.

@@AndreaBorman if i use sudo apt upfate and upgrade doesn't it update firefox and all the apps too?
@AndreaBorman11 ай бұрын
@@moshesabovich9362 Yes it does. The "sudo apt update" checks the update servers from Ubuntu or whatever distro you are on for everything. The "sudo apt upgrade" command will upgrade (that is update) whatever software needs to be updated to the newer version. Depending on if there are any updated versions or not. You can also check for and install updates through your update manager or software center. On Linux Mint this is the Mint Update Manager. Ubuntu has it's own update manager, Software Updater. Or you can use the Gnome Software Center which also works on Debian. I hope that helps.
