With the announcement of the BCS prizing structure for this year, most of us are celebrating the big additions, but a new discussion had begun - what is the core motivation for going to these events?

50% of the reason i go is to socialize with friends from my group, 40% is because i want to be able to say i won a tournament or at the very least got to the finals. The rest is probably because i want to see if my invesment paid off, be it money or hard work.

For me, the 1st gatekeeping to join an event or tournament is whether there will be entry fee or not since I need to manage my budget for transportation and/or hotel. That's why I mostly join Bushiroad events since the entry fee is mostly free and you still got participation bonus, although the bonus may not compare with the paid entry's ones.

Yeah, ppl forget Bushiroad events are free! Where in YGO, you’re expected to buy like 40$ worth of products as an entry fee into YOT and stuff like that.

As someone who goes X-2 in events and is constantly getting 17th or so in events I’m very happy and hype about this! It gives me a bit more of a chance to make top cut and motivates me to try harder! Really happy about this and super hype for the upcoming events

For the GLORY! I wish I had more time to play card games competitively now just to feel the environment and meet new people X_X

I remember pre covid, we used to get a mat, a bag, a deck box, and promos just for entry with no entry fee. Those were the days

I may not have topped a lot of events myself, but the reason I keep on competing in Vanguard tournaments is that I simply love competing in this game. I'm love playing games for the fun of it but Vanguard itself has a way that makes competing extremely fun and I love testing myself against other players and learning more on how and why they make their decks. It also gives me a chance to make new friends and to hang out and vibe with my current ones. And while I'm for getting some neat prizing, it's not the end-all-be-all experience. If I happen to make it that far for them, cool! But if not, it's not the end of the world. I just want to be able to compete friends and all kinds of players alike.

As someone who has always attended events almost yearly for both BCS and springfest Snice 2015, I have never felt like I was wasting my time. Maybe its because I go with my local community members as a group that helps, but I enjoy playing my heart out for games I enjoy ,meet new and old faces and makes memories for my love of card games. The new prizing is great but its not everything (Fun fact before bushi navi I collected my number for events and put it in my main binder)

Excellent video man. There's a reason why I've dedicated my life to tcgs and it's not because of prizes / compensation

A week late to commenting, but one thing I have the tendency to get caught up with when it comes to both locals and events are results, scores, win-loss, etc. Despite loving this game since 2013, I never got to play IRL ever till 2021, and then only started competing in 2023. Because of how much of a late bloomer I was, I got so caught up and extremely insecure with wanting to do well just to show how much I always loved this game, I get stuck in this rut that being passionate means the skills HAVE to translate, and the score will determine how much u love the game (or u are a "fraud"). That said, when I do go to events, it does feel like home and its great, as u do see p much everyone u know thru this game locally all in one place, which is nice in its own way. I will admit it does help me deal with this little imposter syndrome a bit better.

When I attended my first BCS last year I was more so excited to go on a trip with my friends, I didn't set my expectations too high since I was entering with MLB simply because he's one of my favourite units and ended up on 69th place with 4 wins 4 losses, had some amazing games and met some cool people. Events can be an amazing experience prizing aside. I can understand the importance of them like with anything competitive, players want some sort of a trophy to chase after to show off their achievements or to make some sort of a return on their invested time and hard work, but more importantly, don't forget it's a game. Enjoy what you're doing first and don't make prizing the the main reason for wanting to play something imo 😅

I plan on going to the Grand showdown for evolve in September, The prizes are secondary to my own enjoyment for the event. It's okay not to make your money back on things, saves the stress .

Even tho pricing is not everything is a real shame countries like Perú or Costa Rica don't have a sponsored invite for the winner of the event.

Due to how busy my work schedule is and the amount of money to travel for events, I usually have to pick between Springfest and BCS for 1 trip a year. Now, my friends and I set aside a solid amount of time and use it as an opportunity to hang out and catch up in person, but I do agree you meet a ton of people at these events and make new friends out of it. At the end of the day, this definitely helps with incentivizing turn out and hopefully if the player base supports this we might see more locations open up for more tournaments here in the States. (Come on Bushi, have one in DC.)

I think positively about this specific change to prizing. I have flopped a couple opportunities at top tables in this and other games, but if I am being competitive then I'm already thinking of my next opportunity at that moment. (and not disregarding what other good things came out from the experience). Even when South Americans have no opportunity to compete in Premium right now. I hope to have one in the future.

One day I actually wish to go to one of these events and compete, I'd probably practice hard for it day in and day out. Unfortunately that day has not arrived and the opportunity probably won't be open for a long time due to schedule, school, and not having the funding to travel just for this, maybe in the future

The last two tournaments I’ve been to (BSF and BCS Cali) I bubbled. X-2. This can be seen as a failure by a lot of people, a huge disappointment. I wasn’t disappointed though, they were some of the most fun events and trips I’ve ever been on.

The prizing is always meant for people who consistently top - it gives them a reason to play VG over some other game with much better prizing But yes, I do agree that prizing should not be your end all be all. If you think that even with the updated prizing that going to a VG event is a "waste of time" then don't go to the VG event.

First and foremost, I am going to a Vanguard tournament because I enjoy the game. I tolerate some of the jank that shows up occasionally because I enjoy the game. I will go out of my way to make it to a locals that's maybe a little further than most people would travel because I enjoy the game. I'm always going to play to win, but I'm driven to continue because my enjoyment for Vanguard supersedes my need for victory, and the fact that my committal to improving at this game can now also be rewarded on more levels than before is only a plus. I literally do not see any downsides.

Same here, but i got in touch with my local shop and proposed them to start vanguard tournaments. They didnt even hear about vanguard but they accepted. So if you want to play something you sometimes really need to be the first. Since then i organize tournaments by myself, attract people to the game, etc.. i started by myself, and now we are small community of 10 players, still trying to get more people So try, be first, you can hit or miss, but you will never know if you dont try

@@generationx4978 there is a lot of issues with this, first my local shops know about vanguard and I asked them to at least preorder for me and they said no. Also idk anyone else who has heard of it. And all my friends won't even give it a chance because area is Russian and sketchy plus it's not auto
@brownboy534

@@generationx4978how do you "be the first to play a two person game. So I run both decks like that guy playing chess in toy story? Idk anyone who plays and the point of locals is to meet those people. It's not as simple as "be the first." The most important question is, how do you convince someone to spend 40-100$ to buy singles or 25 to buy a starter constructed deck when 1 they have no idea if the would even enjoy the game and 2 there is no way to introduce them to it for free. (Btw area doesn't count because semi auto duelers are not popular with noobs)

How i started is, i bought 5 starter decks (bastion, nirvana, prison… they were like 5$ each) and gave them for free to new players. I asked some of my friends if they are willing to start some new hoby Asked few work collegues Made facebook group and advertised it Little by little friend asked a friend Someone reached us over facebook and so on

@@generationx4978 that's cool and all but what you fail to understand is that I work an alternate shift, even if I did all that. The only days I could participate is Saturday/Sundays but Saturday and Sundays are all magic events days here

I think a lot of the issue right now is with yugioh exactly. The game has been in a bad place for a long time, so there's not much else except prizing and seeing friends to look forward to.
