Eine Leinwand, Farbe und 15 Minuten Zeit: Fred und Luca von Giant Rooks malen für uns das Cover ihrer aktuellen Single „Morning Blue“.
Nostalgische Momente und Aufbruchsstimmung bilden das Gerüst von “Morning Blue”, der aktuellen Single der Giant Rooks. Es ist die erste Veröffentlichung der Indie-Band seit zwei Jahren. In dieser Zeit hat sich das Quintett jedoch nicht ausgeruht: Erst ging ihre unbeschreiblich schöne „Tom’s Diner“ Cover-Version, die gemeinsam mit AnnenMayKantereit entstand, auf TikTok viral (wie ihr hier nachlesen könnt) und die Band spielte eine Nordamerika Tour inklusive ausverkaufter Hallen.
Im Zuge der Veröffentlichung ihres neuen Songs waren Sänger Fred Rabe und Bassist Luca Göttner bei uns zu Gast, um das Cover-Artwork von "Morning Blue" auf einer Leinwand zu verewigen. In "Draw Your Cover" wird es, ganz anders als von den Bandmitgliedern anfangs angenommen, dann doch kein "Alleingang" sondern alles andere als einfach, laut Fred sogar "ultra schwierig" - denn die Zeit wurde zum Ende hin dann doch etwas knapp. Außerdem teilt Luca eine herzergreifende Geschichte darüber, wie seine Träume als aufstrebender Maler in der Luft zerrissen wurden und er folglich "den Pinsel an die Wand" hängte.
Nostalgie auf Funk-Pop Sounds
Die Single "Morning Blue" ist funky-poppig und mitreißend. Mit einer eindringlichen Hook thematisiert der Song eine Nostalgie zur Heimat und damit ständig das Gefühl zu haben, zwischen Welten zu stehen. Dauernd auf dem Weg zu etwas Neuem zu sein und dabei nicht richtig ankommen: Das ist sicherlich auch, wie sich viele Musiker:innen und auch Giant Rooks selbst fühlen. „You know I’ll be on my way to you / I wanna feel like I’m supposed to”, singt Fred Rabe hier mit Wehmut und fügt am Ende ein "Oh we’ve come so far / But couldn’t reach the stars” hinzu. Im Blauen des Morgens bleibt das Gefühl, immer wieder aufbrechen zu müssen.

F: hello, here's Fred L: and Luca F: from giant rooks. We put on our painting clothes today - more or less (not at all). We released our new single "morning blue", today we will paint the cover for DIFFUS. You can start with this, I'll look at these "instruments". AHH, diffus, standard cutlery. An 8, classic 12, yeah I know all of that!! L: I'll start already. F: is that the right colour? L: cmon, we don't have that much time. when was the last time you had a paint brush in your hand? F: we we painted our practicing room. L: oh, yeah, shit, that's true. F: May I help you with this? L: of course! F: with the basic acrilic rose flare L: I'll be able to do the base, but then you have to take over. F: anyone who wasn't good at art didn't attend school. It feels like everyone always got a 1 in art, right?! One didn't have to do much. L: eyy, I can tell you a story about that. F: okay, Luca will tell us a story now. L: I was a very enthusiastic painter when I was a child, I used to love painting actually. Then I was really unmotivated, I think it was 6th or 7th grade. we got our grades, and we obviously had to go to the hallway. I would say that I was one of the best in my class at drawing. Maybe not at participating in class but- F: - else as well. L: Else as well. And then I went outside and she said: "yeah, luca, that's pretty good already, I'll give you a 3 minus. For a 3 it wasn't quite good enough." F: what, in art?? L:" for a 3 it's not good enough!" Eyy F: And now look at this, kurti picasso ! L: for real! F: how he applies the pink! If only he knew that you would be here at "draw your cover"!! L: after that I quit painting. [...] F: usually, if I would paint a picture, then I would start of with outlining with a pencil. There's no pencil here so I would say- L: straight in! F: exactly. We don't have much time, but the good thing is it's only two colours, black and pink. L: one colour we have already. F: then we're halfway done already! L: perfect! F: that will be a solo effort (?) [...]. One time we were in oslo on tour and we had one day off. So we went to the Edward munk museum. We all loved it! It was crazy seeing his original paintings. I think we were all fans of his work, except Johnny. This is where his legendary phrase came up. he said to our technician, Daniel, who didn't like it that much either, he noticed that. And then he went: "Daniel, how do you like it?" And he said: "oh, idk" and Johnny was like: " I haaaaaaate art" . This gets recited a lot now with us, his phrase "I haaate art". [...] L: the difficult thing is that we actually only have to paint the shadows. F: yeah, that's really difficult! L: like, the space between us you could just paint a black area. I just noticed that I made the hand way to big, I'll just keep on going. F: it's not that bad. At least a 3 minus. L: for a 3 it's not quite good enough. F: that's pretty good actually! I get what you were thinking here. [...] F: how do you like your hair? L: they look great! Even better than on the original cover! F: actually, I just thought, you should let our fans draw this. Our fans are really great at painting and at designing merch, jackets,... Hold on I'll show you; this hoodie! I thought to myself: "why are we here?" There's so many people who are a lot better at this. [...] I just ruined an eye. That eye really didn't turn out good. But I was pretty content until now. L: I'm pretty content as well. F: how do you like your eyes? L: I look like I haven't slept in 5 days. F: yeah, I'm sorry. L: it's alright. Johnny is difficult, the glasses. F: it's not getting better. ah no, it keeps on getting worse! You'll go over this again later. L: I'm sorry Johnny, but this is not getting good... F: catastrophic! Your cheekbones, noo. Shit, what am I gonna do now? Nevermind, we'll go over it later. L: especially the shadows.. F: although, L: that's good! That's good! F: what have we done. L: I usually would need silence to do this. F: me too, this doesn't work under time pressure. L: with red wine next to me, classical music... F: usually this would be an easy task, drawing a few faces. However under time pressure... I love the Frank Ocean cover, I think it's my favourite cover. L: they're all awesome from Frank ocean. Shit, what am I doing here. F: can we get a little time extension? L: didn't they say "two times 15 min"? F: ah, okay, did they really? It's really hard giving an interview or talking. L: for real, I'm really concentrating right now. F: me too. Especially if they tell us every half minute how little time we have left. Oh man, I thought we would be better at this. L: I'm drawing like a toddler. F: we started off well, and we've dropped a lot. The first face turned out pretty good. Let's try doing the others a bit better now. But 15 minutes, what can happen in that time? L: you don't write an album in 15 minutes. F: diffus are trying to get us in this format. But we won't let them do it, we will paint the whole day! When I just looked at all the paintings of the others, I thought "hahaha, they painted THAT?!". And now I have to admit that in comparison we are in the lower third of all paintings. L: I agree. F: the will was there, we tried! Wait, it's okay, it's getting better! L: it's actually getting a bit better. F: oh, yes, baby. [...] Wait, what??... Wait, this nose is a bit shapeless. L: that's true. *Show painting* F: can one open an iPhone with this?... What do we say about this...we aren't completely disappointed, considering the time. L: I thought it would be worse. F: it's a solid 3 minus. L: for a 3 it's not quite good enough. F: for a 3 it's not quite good enough, you'll come back for that again.
