How dig a lazy bed ⬇️⬇️⬇️
• How to dig beds fast a...
In this video I will talk about what We have learned after installing over 300ft of lazy x permaculture beds turning most of the lawn into vegetables growing beds.
We are very happy with how our potatoes, garlic and onions are growing so far but have been a little disappointed with our brassicas. We will try address the issues with these plants, mainly the slug damage in the coming weeks.
It’s early still in the season and we still have a lot of space in our beds, one of the crops combinations that I am most interested in growing in our lazy beds will be squash, corn and beans.
I hope you enjoy our videos.
Thanks

You should look into melon pits for when you plant those I haven’t done one but they seem good!

Thanks Barry, really interesting. What do you do with stony soil? Just getting started with a garden here in East Cork myself and have stony soil on a slope. I'm going to lay down cardboard and then pile on horse manure in the shape of lazy beds (domed) and go from there. Will see how I go.

Hey Orla, best of luck with the garden. i recently moved away from using horse manure because of the amount of weed seeds contained in the manure, i just found there was way too much grass and nettles growing from it that it was hard to manage. I’d recommend hot composting your manure first if possible but i know sometimes this isn’t an option. I’d keep a look out of FB marketplace as theres always people looking to get rid of topsoil, you could add a 6-8” layer on top of your cardboards and then add as much compost as you can make each year on top of this.

Hi Barry, I’m after turning the sod on a 20 x 3ft bed. Before I put on my compost should I loosen up the soil or will it be ok to plant straight into. I plan on using it all for potatoes this year.

Also what is the purpose of the layer of straw on top?

Hi Niall, I’m delighted to hear you’re turning sods for planting. Lossening the soil is real necessary, push the seed potatoes into the sods and when you dig out the potatoes in the summer you’ll be lossening it anyway. I usually broadfork my soil once a year during the winter before I add more compost aswell but again not necessary especially with potatoes. The idea of the straw is to “earth up” the potatoes, ie exclude the light from reaching growing tubers that are above ground level. I planing to plant my own spuds today aswell.

@@BarryFresh thanks Barry, I left my chickens at it yesterday after I turned the sod and they loosened it a fair bit anyway! I’ve access to a lot of manure and top soil so I’m putting on the manure today and then when it’s time to earth up I’ll bring in a bit more topsoil. Thanks for all the videos, it good to see videos specifically for our climate, in Mayo here and the volume of rain we get really needs to be considered when planning the garden.

Hi Barry. Any plans for the lazy beds after you dig the spuds out?
@BarryFresh

The plan is to succession plant the beds with a variety of different crops for autumn and overwinter but I’ll have to see what the beds are like after the potatoes as I’ll be earthing up the potatoes with straw. Maybe leeks, winter brassicas, rocket, beets and or even a cover crop.
