We've seen quite a few small in-house studios being shut-down despite them creating arguably better products than the "houses" they belonged to. Giving awards to Astrobot could be a step towards reversing that process. Or at least an attempt to remind AAA scene that investing in small teams and giving them time to do their own thing is still viable

If you take out all references to other IP's and the PS5 console in Astro Bot, you're still left with a great game. It feels really disingenuous to not acknowledge that Team Asobi simply made a very well crafted and tightly paced platformer with a lot of creativity and soul believe it or not. And despite what they said on another episode of this Podcast, Astro Bot's gameplay is incredibly elegant in it's design and transitions to new gameplay mechanics. It's not a incredibly innovative game, but in it's genre, it is excellent.

I want to agree nowever if ypu did that hou are left with what? 60 generic bots, no mothership, not space craft and half of the levels disappear or have no platforms to jump on ( the “sacred Symbols” would be gone 😂 ) Meanwhile, AstroBot was my GOTY pick so suck it losers : P

I know these guys are typically cynical and I expect that from them but damn. They seem entirely unable to see anything that Astrobot does that's not related to nostalgia. It's a genuinely well-made game and beloved by those who love 3d platformers as a high point for the genre. The nostalgia bait is there, but it's sprinkles. These guys are only seeing the sprinkles.

@CosmicShadowMari0 Marty usually acts as the voice of optimism in these instances. I think if JM8 replayed Astrobot and looked at it through his design lens (more than usual) then maybe he'd appreciate just how well made it is? Who knows!

I wish there was a category for weird games like Mouthwashing which is personally one of my favorite games of the year. That thing is an absolute trip and I wish more people knew about it.

Elden Ring Nightreign isn't trend chasing or anything Bandai forced them to do. The director said that it's just something he thought would be fun, and Miyazaki even agreed with him.

Yeah this felt really tone deaf by wind breaker. I love rogue likes games and this honestly looks fun. I'm cautious but they were just way to negative.

Bandai Namco has a bit of history influencing From Soft when they are the ones publishing their games. Like, it was BN's decision to have a dark souls 2, and to have Miyazaki not be the director of it. Miyazaki isn't even a sequel type of guy. It was likely BN that also contracted them for a Dark Soul 3 as well. And now with ER is is VERY likely that BN wants just a little bit more squeezed out. Likely to fulfill some contract that was made with From. A DLC and a popular co op mode doesn't seem too far fetched for a massive publisher to demand of a successful dev team. From can of course say that the idea is their own and Bandai didn't have influence beyond "give us a multi-player hero shooter with a closing arena type thing for ER" way back at the start of their publishing demands for Elden Ring many many years ago, and the game directors are being as creative as they can be with the direction they take the request in, calling it completely their own original style that they actually like and hope the players will to

I can totally see how as a reviewer you would seperate the released game from anything that went on behind the scenes. It does still inform my purchasing decisions when I hear that developers weren't paid enough or forced to work inhumane hours or they used AI or whatever. That's just something that I don't want to support with my money. We as consumers kind of have to vote with our wallet and working conditions will never get better if we continue to give money to the worst offenders just because we want whatever new tosh they're making.

FF7 Rebirth was easily my goty but I'm happy for Astro Bot winning. I feel like it sends a better message to the industry too. Speaking of good messages, I think Geoff did a decent job addressing the criticisms from last year and some of those passionate speeches from people in the industry really reflected that

Personal thoughts on Astro bot winning was it felt very clear who the 3 real choices out of the nomination were. Astro, ff7re, and metaphor the were top choices but didn’t see Jrpgs winning despite metaphor being my personal pick they just don’t let those type of games win

Honestly really didn't like the elden ring game segment. They felt overly negative and doom and gloom and hated for no reason. Was really annoying listening that part. Just feels like they don't even know what they are talking about half the time and just went negative. I want to like this channel but i keep getting disappointed with their takes. Ps. This is just venting with my opinion. Not saying I'm correct. Just how i feel.

I wanted FF7R to win but I'm happy astro bot won. It was a solid platforming game with tons of charm and some difficulty with the challenge levels, unlike most of the rubbish we receive these days. I feel some of the online criticism I see is unwarranted, "it's just an ad, you're paying to play an ad" or "it's just nostalgia bait". It's a celebration of playstation history not as much as Astros playroom but still, would you call going to a museum an advertisement for history? Or say you're just nostalgic about the pyramids? 😅

Going by what Sven said, it seems astrobot won because it was the only one that didn't fired anyone in the comany? his ending speech was weird. Edit: had the wrong name oops I thought it was all about getting the awards done before christmas sales, while Oscars and other film awards don't really care about that sort of thing. Also I believe steam reviews as bot accounts ain't that big on steam, dunno if it;s the 2-step verified or whatever that makes it not easy to make accounts for bot but steam review let me know if there's funny business.

Tbh I'm not surprised Astrobot won considering the competition. Just general word of mouth on that game makes it sound amazing. Everyone who has played it seems to love it. It seems to me like it's going to be one of those games which goes down as a "classic". None of the other nominees had that kind of buzz. Wukong honestly just looks like just another souls-like, but prettier. The real bullshit was the "best performance" nominees. Troy Baker giving out the award instead of winning it felt so wrong.

I never bought a ps5, just because Canada wants 1000$ still. But also there is nothing for a ps5 i want, graphics mean nothing, fun and gameplay that i enjoy matters more. I still play on my ps4, but i do think that the ps5 is a useless shoebox, my wiiu has more original Games. 😅 So what fps this that or graphics this and that, its hogus bogus. Just have fun.
