I love that for you guys, a house built between the 1840s and 1860s is "Super Old"! For us here in rural France that's like the day before yesterday :)) But that doesn't take away from some of the great finds you make, the bit of paper in that old compact was a real treasure and your enthusiasm is so infectious!

I hope you get this comment. People like you make detectorist have a future. You understand the simplest things overlooked by some experienced detectorist. Also you had compassion and knoledge of that old structure. And you understand your permission. Good job happy detecting.

If I found a skeleton key like that, I’d walk around and check out the oldest building in town to see if any had a keyhole that looked like the key might fit. I watch a fair number of these type of videos and I cannot understand why so many folks with metal detectors don’t seem to think of having a spray bottle of water or alcohol to clean some things off without rubbing sand and dirt into them.

People who've never gone detecting don't understand just how rare it is to find a skeleton key, especially one that nice. Yeah it's not a treasure chest, but it's still very exciting.
@lynnpaul68086 жыл бұрын
Hi. I used to do metal detecting for fun in my backyard. The house was built around the 1840"s. I found a huge dumping spot on my property with old bottles, etc. The one thing I learned was I found a large cent penny 1865. I washed it off. And OFF came the top layer of that penny. So always let them sit and dry then use a fine brush to dust it off. I'm no pro but when I saw this coin it brought back memories.

While I've never had the time for it, being aware of many 150+ year old cellar holes made me curious. What I can't understand is the apparent maniacal response when finding an object of absolutely no value. As I'm old enough to be your grandfather I assume my confusion is a generational thing.

Research can pay off big time. But it isn't always the rule. A farmer in England asked a detectorist he knew to help find a hammer he'd lost in a field. The detectorist found the hammer, but along the way he also found several millions in Viking gold and silver. The only research he did was to ask the farmer where in the field he might have lost the hammer. .

@kristenharral47076 жыл бұрын
Trevor Nunya it's a possibility it could have been a women's cosmetic compact. Some had lipstick, perfume, rouge, etc. and some had oil blotting papers to absorb oil on the face. (Which were also made from rice paper) they were popular in the 20s- early 50s. Some even had a chain on them to be carried like a purse.

I can't imagine how it first got thus misused, but you, the Hoover Boys and other U.S. detecting channels all seem to refer to any old key as a 'skeleton' key. A 'skeleton' key is actually a term used to describe a sort of master key that will open any lock in a building, and possibly others elsewhere, too. It was a locksmith's device, or a master key, as used by such as chambermaids and porters in hotels, capable of opening or locking any room. The term has also been applied to 'security' keys that do not have fixed 'teeth', but a slide into which various bits with different tooth settings for different locks could be affixed. What you found there at 3:25 is a big old key, and not a bone in sight. .
@jiroscoptic42285 жыл бұрын
Well back the those big keys opened all the doors to the house hence a skeleton key
@profsakharov11915 жыл бұрын
@@jiroscoptic4228 Sort of begs the question why you'd be locking all the doors in your own house. Doors to the outside, yes. But surely you wouldn't lock the bedroom doors, the kitchen door, the door to the lounge? And with those very large keys that come up occasionally you'd have to have huge, ungainly locks on every door. .

You know JD, I often ponder on the reasons why people would let a well built building or home go to rot away and I have now come up with two reasons people might do that, apart from the several obvious reasons. Number one, there are Bad memories attached to the person that lived and or died there and or number two is the family believes the property is haunted or something similar. A possible number three would be ground or water contamination of toxic poisons, that cannot always be seen by the eye. What a shame, eh? That house is certainly well built.

Honestly, this IS clickbait, but you can't even complain, its masterful clickbait. The thumbnail with title only shows "DIGGING DEEP HOLE FOUND HUGE TREASURE CHEST" because the full title is too long to fit in the thumbnail text. Still clickbait though.
@JDsVarietyChannel7 жыл бұрын
It's always important to put any relevant keywords in the first part of the title. Otherwise you just shoot yourself in the foot. As you mentioned, a large portion is excluded in the sidebar. I think it only shows about the first 40 characters. Even in a manual search, you only see the first 70/100. Most people click on videos before they read the whole title anyway. So I don't think it makes much of a difference. I have many similar videos that have less than 10k views. KZbin is goofy. =P

Looks like a minelab E-Trac. Great machine from what I've seen. Little pricey at $1600! Garrett ace 300 is a very good entry level machine with a lot of nice features For its price. I personally used an Ace 250 when I started detecting, and did very well with it, as it payed for itself in about 6 months just messing around at parks and playgrounds. I've been using a Garrett AT Pro for about 2 years now, and love the thing! I believe prices are coming down on the AT Pro now that the AT Max is out. Save your nickels and get an AT Pro. You won't be disappointed!
