Extended History of Starland Vintage and Unusual:
Built in 1909, the building in which Starland resides originally served as three storefronts for the neighborhood. A grocery store, restaurant, & barber shop.
But some notable ones are a drygoods store, bicycle shop, television & radio repair, a wig warehouse, & more.
From 1965-1982, Vocalist Eddie Frierson, a member of The Hy-Tones, owned a barber shop in the storefront where Starland’s counter currently sits.
Eddie was heavily involved in the Civil Rights movement and known as “The Good Trouble Barber” his group The Hy-Tones were the house group for the TV show “Night Train”. This show featured musical guests such as Jimi Hendrix & James Brown during it’s short tenure. Paving the way for shows like Soul Train.
In 1980 history was made with the opening of The Women’s Room, Nashville’s First Women’s Only Bar. Starland has been added to “Nashville Sites” walking tour map. Highlighting historic LGBTQ sites throughout Nashville.
Since 1983 this building has served as an Antique or Vintage store. Long time Nashvilllians may remember shopping at The Art Deco Shoppe or most recently Pre to Post Modern. In 2021 long time Pre to Post Modern dealers, Lynda & Chad, took over the space fully and Starland was born.
