Digging up a Survival - Bug Out - SHTF Cache after 1 year - Desert Survival Bugout Cache
I return to dig up a survival SHTF bug out cache I buried along the route to my bugout location I over a year ago. This was a hasty sustainment cache with minimum preparation. It was a bit of an experiment to see how the cache would hold up over the winter (all 4 seasons) and if the items I put in it would suffer the conditions.

Just a suggestion - if burying water do it in a separate cache so if water does burst it does not ruin food and other supplies. Bury them side by side.

Happy to see someone putting useful stuff in such a cache. Some food, water, toilet paper is mostly more helpful than a ton of guns and rifles and thousands of rounds. Unless you hide that stuff to start a war. Excellent choice. Great idea and all water- and dirtproof. Thanks for this idea.

It's good to lay some artifacts in the hole so you can tell if you are digging in the exact spot. Pieces of broken ceramic and/or some types of plastic. Avoid metal in case metal detector clubs are in the area. I used florescent orange trail marking tape in the holes. one shovel head deep.

@@worddunlap Actually, if you have metal in your cache it is smart to put metal junk in the ground as a decoy, so say for example if someone goes by with a metal detector, chances are you can throw casual searchers off with decoy junk layered at various depths, took that tip from a former Army Special Forces operator

Good video. I had some caches that were buried for 9 years. Longterm requires more effort. I used 5 gallon buckets with rubber gasket lids. I live in central Ohio so we get a lot more rain than your location. What I learned: Buckets that I buried on their sides had water leak into them. I buried some buckets near a pond. All but 1 had water leak into them even though I had them buried upright. My marker for the cache was the largest cottonwood tree. Beavers actually felled the tree after 7 years so my marker was disturbed. Other cases were buried on top of a hill that had very little activity on it for years. The state came in after 6 years and mowed and cut down trees making it very difficult to locate two of my caches. Tree and plant roots grew over my caches which required an ax and a maddox to dig them up. A lot of extra work I did not plan on when I buried them. I buried aluminum hand trowels at each site. Half of them I could not find when I went to dig up the caches. Notes: Pack items in sealed mylar bags or vacuum sealer to water proof them longterm. Use multiple markers for each cache in case one is disturbed Check on the caches at least 2 times per year Do not bury buckets on their side Thanks again for the video!

Proves that the seal on your 'cheap' container do work well enough in the high desert, and buried deep enough for nothing to freeze. That deep would take long term, deep below zero temps for a few months to effect the liquids. So, what's the brand / description of your jug?

Instead of a screw-on lid , I will use glued end-caps on both ends of the pipe. With a decent surface prep and sanding, the PVC glue will make a perfect seal. Melting the material together. I am even thinking of filling them up with Carbon Dioxide (CO2) or Argon (TIG welding gas) , right before sealing them. Both gases are heavier than air. Their large molecule size will also prevent them from escaping through any porous material. This way , anything inside the pipe should last for centuries ;o) Although I have read that PVC is an unstable material, which will breakdown over time. It might be better to use ABS-plastic pipes instead.

Good vid. Very few people have done hideys in their locale, testing them, and making appropriate modifications as needed for safe and short/long term storage. Now that you know they work, the more you can stuff them with maximum gear and goods. Person in UK did hidey in a forest area, and returned in year, and almost all was mold and mildewed from humid soil and weather/seasons. Location, location, location ... and a damned good seal on your container (!). Desert and desert highland areas are the best of storage locations for weather/seasons. Vastly different for other locales and weather/seasonal conditions. Rifle, pistol, and individual ammo cleaned and wiped down with gun solvent and gun oil (or rifle grease like military - wipe off later [with also stored wipe down cloth towels] for multipurpose use). Ammo in ammo containers, mags, or clips put into HD ziplocks or mylar (absorbers and desiccants). Ammo breathes, and gunpowder gassifies with age and humidity into nitro (same smell in used military ammo cans). Same ammo still found from Civil War, WW I, and II can still be buried in ground, be viable, and with contact explode (nitro gas and gelling of the gunpowder). Must stop humidity and breathing, ... or allow full breathing of dry ammo. Gunpowder in higher heat locales can out-breath and become dried and dead gun "salts", outgassing all of its volatiles. Only valuable in throwing ammo "from your hand" at the target! Either keep the ammo vital (dry, breathing in short term storage and replacement) or no-breathing atmosphere (absorbers and desiccants, dry in a non-oxygen, non-humidity container for long term storage). Mylar rifle bag with/without gun solvent/oil or grease, or dry rifle storage with absorbers and desiccants. Put rifle and ammo into PVC tubing with PVC cap ends (not the plastic inserts). Duct tape cap edges and you (your locale) will be good to go. 24" deep and horizontal in the zone of aeration (airy soil layer above zone of saturation - water level saturated soil).

Most farm supply stores have food grade plastic drums of various sizes. I bought several and even found pickled peppers from Greece with the juice vinegar still good. The last ones I bought were from India and were used to ship prescription medications in a watertight internal bag. Wash it out and wipe with a sponge and it's clean add some heavy duty trash bags and youre good to go. I store animal feeds in mine but that can change in the blink of an eye. These come in 10 gallons 20 gallons 25 gallons 30 gallons 40 gallons 55 gallons and 60 gallons

You proved it. I promise you if you dug that up in a bad world it would be a slice of paradise. Having cache resources is the most overlooked and misunderstood concept in preparedness, when in reality it should be the first thing considered when confiscation and relocation will surely be on the agenda after an event. I often put photographs in with my cache to keep my mind and will strong. This is a perfect example of an along the route resource cache that would definitely provide strength and options. We use something similar when we go elk and deer hunting since it allows us to have food and water in a handy place in case we get decide to spend the night away from camp. We will also hang six or so gallon water jugs in trees a couple of days before a hunt so we can travel larger areas and still have plenty of water for ourselves and our horses.

I would use 2 containers. 1 for liquids and one for dry stuff. Then, put some kitty litter descant in with the dry container. If any liquid did freeze and split a container, the dry stuff would still be good.

yah that and a knife and small axe maybe - but this looks very good. And it kept so well despite the 'elements'. And it was not destroyed by peopel who found it. So you did a very good job there. Congratz again!

To discourage would be treasure hunters with metal detectors: scatter old rusty bolts, nuts, drill shavings, pop can lids, etc. about 6 inches to a foot deep in an area 10 foot radius around your stash. Put an old smashed beer can about 3inches deep on top of a rock about foot deeper which is a foot or so over your stash. Scatter drill shavings in the dirt around your stash sparingly around a foot deep. It will drive them nuts!
