The Blue Forest in Eden Valley, Wyoming is famous for agatized blue petrified wood. The petrified trees are buried in an oil shale that filtered mineral rich fluids through the wood giving it its unique blue colors. However, the oil shale makes finding and excavating these fossils very difficult. Furthermore, Blue Forest petrified wood is only found along the edge of the ancient fossil lake Gosiute. This means there are very few exposures of this ancient petrified forest. In today's fossil hunting adventure, we were lucky enough to find multiple exposures loaded with Blue Forest petrified wood which we took home to cut and polish alongside some of our favorite pieces we have collected from this locality.
Stay tuned for an educational video next week where we teach you how to polish petrified wood like this.

I admire that you're scientists with your qualifications and knowledge of paleontology and geology, you're explorers recovering things that haven't seen the light of day in millions of years AND you're artists and craftsmen preparing the finds. Between yourself and Cat you make a great team. Adding my hero Joe to the mix makes your videos a 'must watch'. Lol. I watch pretty much everything you guys put out here but these 25 to 40 minute ones are usually incredible.

Tell me about it when you have to walk outside in the hot weather. My wish to leave for 2 months for each 6 months , but instead the lack burning me out so I wish to leave for good . This warmer US Mojave desert smaller towns people do not try to help ease the residents at all and so they deal without and CA is lame . Assuming you're fine . Winters not lasting long as you wish . It seems local 'VIPs' think you tough it out so no fixing .

Some some collectors like petrified wood in it's natural state. If you break up and destroy pieces you don't intend to take with you, you ruin them for someone else. Why not try and plan ahead by looking at the agate in the center under a jewelers loop and judge quality that way. It can also save you some labor.

Helpful hints -- stopping and restarting the saw during a cut will often result in a ridge on the face of the slab ... oil can be easily removed from cut slabs by leaving them in kitty litter or oil spill absorbent for a few hours ... be sure not to breathe the oil mist when opening the cover!

Neat video and you're right, that rock cutter "Rocks". My favorite slice so far is the "sick" piece, as you call it, at 16:17. Joe, you have a smart Mom. Next time a Lady let's you know she has been scraped by a jagged rock, perhaps you could give her a couple seconds of sympathy. It reduces the pain instantly. No kidding. For what it's worth Joe, what you said about walking barefoot was funny (if you had said it to one of the guys). Free Advice from an elder. I Appreciate the Desert the most, from sunset til sunrise. It's cooler and every living creature comes out to play. Take a black light next time. Awesome. : )
