The psychological genre is also pretty dead. I am talking about pure psychological thrillers and fever trips and not 'mental breakdowns' that Re:Zero tries to do. Though that one was of the best aspects of the show and not even badly done I just want another psychoogical TRIP because that is my favorite genre. I think the region problem is also a really big problem because it just makes trouble instead of helping anyone. Less people will want to have crunchyroll because it is not worth it, and animators are underpaid already and this doesn't help at all. Considering they will get shit from crunchyroll anyway. I really support the idea of induvidual patreons and kickstarter projects. Gladly would pay for that.
@TrentLouison8 жыл бұрын
I think I get what you mean. I would never call Re: Zero a psychological thriller show. Subaru's struggles are more about finding the will to move forward despite how everything likes to work against him at times,. He does undergo horrifying events that change him but those things aren't really the overall focus, just a part. I'd consider it more of just normal Thriller. That being said I am all for another Paranoia Agent (Watch it if ya haven't yet)

1:00 I had the best timing at finding this video. Toei just did it again today. They have announced yet another Digimon Adventure, but this time it's taking place in 1999-2000, which means that the status quo literally cannot change. I love Adventure as much as the next guy, but I've had enough. I can't brain how this new series can be good. It's even going to be focused on "solving problems in the real world", which I see as "monster of the week filler slice of life". I don't know. At least we have good games now. PS: The series has been confirmed as a full-on reboot with a different plot taking place in 2020. The animation actually looks pretty decent and they are changing the music and all. Who knows, it might be passable after all.

Licencing based on region stems from the fact you can most often only sell the distribution rights to one company. Companies who distribute physical copies usually want the internet distribution for their regions as well, meaning Crunchyroll needs to make special deals with those companies separate from the original animation studio to get them for those regions. We're lucky in North America because the US and Canada has rights sold for both as a single market, and pretty much anything that didn't end up on Crunchyroll ended up with Funimation, and now their deal has merged their libraries in a way. It's all about money, and the small distributors want a piece of the pie from Crunchyroll.

It's funny how I have heard people complaining about magical girls shows before Madoka when the shows were a lot more varied. It wasn't just Precure and more shows similar to Madoka (like Magical Girl Raising Project). If you wanted something somewhat light-hearted you could find something like Magic Users Club or Doremi. More serious shows like Princess Tutu weren't as extreme as Madoka, but someone who's not into typical magical girl anime could probably enjoy it. I'm more just annoyed by the ones who take so much from Madoka with shock value, which wasn't the only standout factor of the former anyway. Even with magical girl manga this problem exists.

I think the main issue is ironicly how powerful and influential Madoka Magica is now... It made TONS of money, lead Gen Urobuki to get admitted to make Fate/Zero and Pyscho Pass which I think made even more, and showed you can put 8 levels of detail into a show and still have it work which I recall from somewhere ONE (of MOB psycho and One Punch Man fame) took a lot of inspiration from. Basically, "its better then most shows, so we must take from it!"

+Julian di Jorio Pride? In animation? In *JAPAN*? If pride is working people to death for shitty salaries, they've got plenty of that. This is a _big_ problem in Japan and it has been for years. Animators work long hours to the point where overworking is a risk to 1 in 4 animators, and they get paid far less than they deserve. I don't think that's in any way noble or prideful. If donation helps push their salaries to something acceptable, I would say that is something to take pride in.
@RokuroCarisu8 жыл бұрын
Fall Sacrificing your life to a greater cause is _still_ widely considered noble in Japan. Mostly by those who profit from said sacrifices though. Just like the peasant soldiers of the past, the workers of today are basically being told that if they give their lives to further their superiors' goals, at least it won't have been completely wasted. To die from serving your boss is made out to be better than to have no boss to serve. And even people who should know that this is bullshit are still buying into it, because an integral part of Japanese cultural ideology is the strife for greatness. Those who don't have the chance to do anything great themselves still want to be part of a group or support a person that can, because they believe their lives would be worthless if they don't.

All of these are very different from stuff like Haikyuu or Kuroko no Basket, (which although I really enjoyed both, aren't quite as good as the others I listed in my opinion) and worth seeing in their own right. Major and Hajime no Ippo are both really good shonen anime also, and I would definitely recommend checking both out if you ever get the chance.

You might want to check out Kaiji which is about a gambler betting his life, One Outs which is similar but with baseball, Major which follows the life of a 5 year old kid until a fully grown adult playing major league baseball, Chihayafuru which is kind of about karuta (a mostly exclusive Japanese card game) and about a young girl trying to become the world champion, and Ping Pong which, while it's honestly barely "about" ping pong at all, is still pretty great and stunning to look at. They're all very different from the sports anime that just exist to sell merchandise, and are all very enjoyable stories in their own right. Kaiji in particular is a ton of fun to watch in my opinion.

I don't care if it's present-day or sci-fi, as long as it's realistic and well thought-out. The last such title was Psycho-Pass. Distribution is the biggest obstacle, especially if you're distributing physical copies. Despite geek culture as a whole becoming more accepted and experiencing increasing mainstream attention, anime is still that weird cousin few want to hang out with. Somehow it's still a niche within the geek niche & you'd never know if it would be worth the cost of selling DVD copies in a given region In terms of digital distribution, streaming subscription services seem to be a working solution but credit is a pretty big barrier to entry that discourages a lot of people as credit is simply not an option for some or they just don't trust the internet. Perhaps if people could buy a physical coupon like the iTunes or PSN Store cards, that could serve as an alternative for people who are willing to pay but don't have credit. Though distribution costs would still be a pain in the ass. Also you'd still have to deal with people who'd rather not pay a cent and use free streaming sites.

I am not sure how I will be able to handle people in the industry dying. When you say "Anime fan for life", that means you literally live and die with the industry you grew up with. Knowing that the voice actors the same age as me may or may not die before does scare me. I can only hope that their voice is carried on by a new generation of voice actors. Not just voice actors, but I hope that animators are able to pass down their techniques to the younger generation so we never lose the old animation styles. Luckily Shirobako gives me hope that will never happen.

It's fun to watch anime in English since their very good. Dubs are getting better and better, and I would much rather watch anime then read it when a dub is available. Dub fans have no problem reading sub-titles, but we prefer watching things in our native language. If the dub is the same quality as the sub, then I'll go for dub. If it's a bad dub, then I'll go with the sub. Nothing more to be said. Plus English is a world-wide language, pretty much every country speaks it.

Mugiwara Ricky Lots of ignorant sub purists assume Japanese actors all sound great by default due to "yelling" and "emotions", but they don't seem to realize how exaggerated most performances are and assume it's just great acting. They haven't got nearly enough knowledge of the Japanese language to understand what constitutes good and bad acting. And as such, they don't ask for much when it comes to Japanese voice acting. If the seiyuu can emote properly and their voice sounds appealing to their ears, that's good acting. This is what I find to be most absurd. In Japanese anime acting, lines are most often either spoken quietly in relative monotone or screamed at the top of the actor's lungs, without much in between. This is in contrast to acting in the United States/Canada, where the goal is to sound as natural as possible (regardless of medium, and notwithstanding speech quirks that interrupt flow like stuttering or talking over each other), so those extremes are comparatively rare. But when people go on to say that this Japanese version has 'good acting' despite having no understanding of what constitutes 'good acting' in Japanese and that this English version has 'bad acting' even though very few of the criticisms brought up have anything to do with acting ( which is true )... well I just find that a bit weird.?

Has digibro stopped reading comments? idk but I'm still going to post my thoughts. 1. Sailor moon crystal season 3 has improved a lot in it's production especially the animation. There also have been a few Saint seiya released after omega. Didn't watch soul of gold but it got a score of 7.26 on MAL, an improvement over omega. 2. There's a few magical girl shows this season, definitely less comapared to the 2000s but I wouldn't say the genre is dead yet. New fans aren't into mecha I guess, just like how most anime fans from the 80s weren't into super robots and Tatsunoko's superhero shows which lead to the decline of those genres. 3. I agree with light novels being formulaic and similar. However, light novels are already becoming less popular with only 2 light novel adaptations this season. It's not easy for a shitty light novel to get an anime adaptation anymore. I also wish for light novels to go back to being weird and experimental again. 4. Completely agree with you on copyright take down, but undoing region locking is more complicated. You forgot the fact that crunchyroll is not the only company licensing anime. There are companies in Europe who only license shows for specific countries and there's also China, Taiwan and SE asia who are arguably as big of a market as the west for anime. The owners of the anime usually sell licensing rights to more than one company to get more revenue. Getting worldwide license is not easy and most shows won't benefit from giving crunchyroll worldwide license anyway. 5. People die. It's sad but unavoidable. 6. IMO entertainment in general is undervalued. I vaguely remember an animator on twitter said that the horrible working conditions in the anime industry are over exaggerated, I can't seem to find that tweet so take it with a grain of salt. Even if it's over exaggerated, it still doesn't dismiss the horrible working conditions still present. Also, studios like polygon picture are working towards having better working conditions and have been successful. I don't see this problem going away anytime soon but there is still hope. Crunchyroll gave almost nothing to the creators because the money they spent on licensing goes to the corporates instead. The product's commercial success is irrelevant to the creator's pay if they are just contracted to make the product. Buying more blu-rays won't increase the creator's pay unless the studio is part of the production committee. However, crunchyroll and funimation have been a big help to anime recently. Crunchyroll has contributed in funding Ojisan to Marshmallow, Kizaniver and just announced that they are producing a show with Shingo Natsume and Mitsuo Iso as key staff. Funimation also contributed to dimension w's funds. I do think now is the time to support them more than ever.

I think it was Bahi JD who was the animator who talked about the industry not being as bad. The other place is inb the Casrtoon Brew comments of the DBS debacle that talked about it being also exaggerated.

I'm hoping Digibro didn't actually forget about the companies and licensing stuff, and just didn't mention it because doing that would make the video longer. +Imran Ahmad It's getting old because these shows aren't doing much of anything different. Being a fan of the genre I usually check out whatever I can find online, but what I'm seeing is practially the same thing constantly. "Dark" deconstructions or just seinen orientated shows where girls constantly die due to the system being rigged/a spin off from another series. I would rather see a middleground where more shows in the genre that come out have a balance of both serious and lighter toned moments than what is out now.

I mean the reason for region blocking is that the majority of companies bank on making more money by spliting up the rights for diffrent regions. And if crunchyroll isnt willing to pay that or if they are out bid for that region then nothing you can do. In the past as well (and still in some case) companies would sell would bundle ditgital and home video rights in one, and in cases where the buyer was only intrested in the home video rights the ditgital would just be sitting there. Happened alot with Manga UK.

DJ - D20 My friends laugh at me for liking anime, and while it's a joke most of the time, it gets me thinking about how outsiders think of anime fans. Especially the older people who don't understand it and why it's popular. There was a period of time before I turned maybe 11 or so where my parents wouldn't let me watch anime simply because they saw a part in one of the Naruto movies I was watching where blood splattered on the ground. And the rising popularity of fan-made doujins and pornographic images of anime characters didn't help. But now I do it anyway, although they seem to be fine with it. I guess my whole point is that people tend to see one tiny bit of something and immediately assume it's the entire thing. Which is a big part of why people find anime fans weird. This really goes for any form of entertainment media though. Sorry if that was long and kinda got off track.

I must inform you about something for what you say around the 9:00 min mark, about how Japan treats copyright. Not everyone takes videos down, only some companies. They are doing it in a smart way by blocking it in some countries, and the second way, by adding adverts on videos so that, with all the free advertisement they get, they also monetize the video they are striking by letting em stay on KZbin. I think that it's a really smart thing to do, unlike some companies who are still intent on striking down op videos which are free advertisement, even for older animes. I guess it just differs from company to company, from publishers to publishers to be more precise.

Anime needs world wide appeal and they need to monetize that. They already have world wide appeal it's their own fault they don't make enough money. +Jepze Which is sad when you have shows like Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, and Ghost in the Shell.
@SE_Lin8 жыл бұрын
You can easily make it so people stop thinking that. My parents still aren't the biggest fans of anime but they'll occasionally chill with me as I watch an episode or just walk in during scenes, and they totally get it. They know I'm not watching kids shows. At a family event my Mom literally explained to my cousin how anime is different from a traditional cartoon when she asked about it, just from what she'd seen of it in passing. Imagine if an anime like Cowboy Bebop was broadcast on a network like HBO. They would hype it up, post trailers for the premeire, and maybe play two episodes every week. There's tons of people who'd get interested, watch it, love it, and have a newfound appreciation for anime. It just needs to actually happen, and I think at some point it will. HBO probably has no interest in anime, I'm just using them as an example. Imagine how insane it would be if HBO put a lot of money behind an adaptation of let's say... 20th Century Boys and then broadcasted it just like it was Game of Thrones. That would take the Western world by storm.
@Arlesmon8 жыл бұрын
CGI on itself is not a bad thing. Since studios like pixar and dreamworks use it and their works look gorgeous. And if we're talking about the japanses using it then i bring advent children to the table, since the animation looks good and still hold up to today's standards. The problem with that is that the anime studios aren't experienced in this method of animating, since there have been times when it's done well (AOT in the backgrounds, advent children and if you want fate/series, japanese video games). So the problem is not the tool, but the user in this case.
@Punisher94198 жыл бұрын
Go back and watch the first Toy Story film and tell me CGI holds up as well has hand drawn animation. I don't have a problem when CGI is used in places to cut costs with like cars in the background and characters in the background. I do have a problem when an entire show is just CGI. I have that problem with films as well.

You are really bringing the right points about Anime Digi. The work conditions in Japan are horrible and atrocious. Too many animators, voice actors/actresses and directors are being overworked and underpaid, and as long as this standard of practice is continued and encouraged, then Anime as a whole will suffer greatly and will never see a radical change or be reformed for the better. This pratice also leads to the reasonings of these deaths and passings of these famous people that we've heard and loved in some of our liked and appreciated shows, and this cannot continue lest we want all Anime as a whole to dramatically go extinct. Japan really needs to change their ethics and really just focus on making standalone hits that build a profit than constant one hit wonders season after season after season after season. Thanks for this informative and well-needed video.

I'm beginning to hate the term "free advertising". The way it is being spoken about is so fucking narcissistic and shows the perceived entitlement that these people have, including you. Yes, their business strategies are stupid and beyond outdated, which you just later talked about, but please don't use the phrase "I'm [literally] giving them free advertising". There are already numerous people who already know who these guys are and surprisingly enough we are not their target audience. Some companies may actually gear their series towards us but a lot of these companies just don't care, business wise. They're incompetent businessmen who takes things at face value and whose principals are beyond outdated. Besides, they won't listen to the little man, anyway. If you haven't worked up to being recognised at their level, you're not worth listening to.
@NykowPalalum8 жыл бұрын
Plus, the "I'm [literally] giving them free advertising" feels like the videomaker offers something freely to the studio, while in reality, putting the name of a famous anime/movie/etc advertises the videomaker's channel.

NykowPalalum I've also seen random children on KZbin who make 30 views per video also use that as a justification.

Mu'izz Siddique Yes, but Digi isn't a kid with 30 views. He's got a good few hundred thousand subscribers and go in depth with the negatives and positives of whatever he reviews. Not to mention that he isn't just uploading the full episodes--he provides commentary and critique on the subject, which falls under fair use.
@muizzsiddique8 жыл бұрын
NocturneBeast Doesn't matter how many subs he has, the people who watch his videos are mostly already watching these shows and if people are flocking to watch these shows the views mostly come from piracy and/or streaming platforms like Crunchyroll which don't really give as much money anyway (as Digi has stated). What benefit, especially financial benefit, has Digi given these conglomerates and corporations? A few loose change? The fair use argument is one I don't have a problem with as I believe that should be put more into consideration when thinking about Copyright, but my problem comes from the narcissism that stems from "free advertisement". Of course, the biggest issue here is availbility and the incompetence of these old fashioned businessmen who don't want to expand their horizons to potentially more customers, but they see that as more work (when their entire culture also depends on offloading work onto someone else).

I wish I knew how things worked economically for anime productions. In the US, animation is mostly made based upon a LCD for mass appeal. In Japan, things seem to be made for niche markets. My guess is that niche shows can make big merchandise sales off of a smaller amount of devoted fans. And yet the artists on these shows never make enough to feed themselves or remain healthy, and often must have another person to rely on for housing. I think the market is simply over-inflated. I wouldn't mind if it popped soon, if only because I want some higher wages to rise from those ashes.

I was going to reply to your "Most Boring Taste in Anime" video as it doesn't allow comments but all I wanted to do was to ask for advice because I enjoy you as a content creator and I think you delve way more into actually knowing anime than I do. Now I wanted to give you a setup of what I have enjoyed and what I have not enjoyed and I would just kindly ask you to try and see some consistency in my taste of what I should delve into next because I'd rather not waste my time. I'm going to do a list format from here. What I enjoyed: 1. All of the Tenchi Muyo! franchise 2. Date A Live 3. Re:Zero 4. One Punch Man 5. Ergo Proxy (I did go into this because it looked different and I found myself connecting and enjoying the relationships.) 6. Berserk (the new show, I have never seen the older one.) 7. Elfen Lied (was difficult at some points to captivate me and I didn't like the ending but it had it's moments) What I did not enjoy or what I barely even gave a chance to enjoy and quit: 1. Code Geass (I watched about half way through and quit from boredom or feeling like I could be watching something better.) 2. Attack on Titan (I quit in the first episode out of sheer boredom) 3. Naruto (I have a strong Bias against the styling of the characters and the type of personality) 4. Dragon Ball Z (Yet another bias against it for it's squat and yell inducing action) 5. Bleach (It's just such a "modern" name and it's absurd to call something by a cleaning product) 6. Cowboy Bebop (the name is soo absurd that I can't picture sitting down and watching it) 7. Akira 1988 (beautiful but probably the worst anime movie that i've ever seen) That's literally all the anime that I've seen besides the ones I won't watch like Bleach and Naruto and Cowboy Bebop. I don't know why but it's hard for me to construct a mental graph of new and old/good or bad anime. The whole library feels very convoluted on where to look for the things I like and I can just look it up but I get suggestions that just feel like they were plucked out of thin air like i'm in a desert. Any suggestions would be very gratuitous of you and I would very much not like to get halfway through something just to find out that I don't like it.

On the other other hand (three-handed story banzai) Spirited Away was one of the most freaking beatyful voice jobs I've ever heard in dubs AND local animation (which was actually pretty great up until the 90s). Patreon funding for shows sounds very interesting. I think the best way to do it would be on a show by show basis, not for the studios. That way the studios have like 1 or 2 episodes to convince the audience to support them, and if the work is good, people will start giving them money for it. Reward merit, let the shit fall through the cracks. Ultimately it would be the most honest way to go about it. Could of course lead to a lot of unfinished shows, depending on how they go about implementing it into their financial/budget plans. If they start banking on that money to actually make the show, instead of seeing it as something on top as a bonus reward from their audience.

Yeah the Patreon for anime studios would be a huge help. I mean seriously imagine just having the option for worldwide fans to just throw a single $ to their fav studio or just at the one studio the show made now by, they have the most interest. That would give them freaking millions fast. I hope some big wig in Japan sugests the idea & it spreads to become the future for the industry cause seriously that would be a perfect solution

Calvinfan i know its not a "set" but that is a term used for where he is filming. it looked so much more professional and after seeing that video i went to look at other videos he has done to discover it now regressed to 2003 vloging. i really think it hurts his subscriber count having the set look like a channel that is just starting up

Since this isn't his main channel, I can't imagine that he cares too much about that. This channel is mainly there to put random ideas he has out there

You've talked about A-1 Same-face before, how it's not bad looking but it's awful how it took over the industry. Has that trend slowed or reversed since then? Is it just not that bad of a problem. I swear I see it everywhere still.
