I gotta say, I think I agree with your recommendations 9 out of 10 times, and the ones I disagree with are a matter of taste, not because they're bad (or good) shows. I found your channel a month or two ago, and I've been slowly working through your list. The shows you recommend that I've dropped have mostly been cute girls and mecha shows, both of which I am just not interested in due to genre, and not because of show quality.

When I find something obscure to like it usually gives me a boost in enjoyment that I don't get from more mainstream stuff, and I'm often kinda disappointed when obscure stuff I like get more popular or mainstream, even though I love recommending stuff to people myself. So I guess there's a sense of identification and belonging there. And I guess when you identify with stuff you like it creates this sort of space wherein you feel like you have a certain safety and authority. It becomes your 'thing' and your place where you don't need to worry about competition from as many other people. And the others who you know already know about that thing or is there are easier to recognize as kindred spirits or something. So when something gets more popular the identification looses meaning and the space becomes more and more crowded with competition and people you don't acknowledge in the same way, and you lose the ability to show other people the cool thing you discovered since they'll already have heard about it from someone else. I guess my point is, that to me, being a hipster doesn't mean liking lots of obscure stuff, it's more like when you like obscure stuff to feel better about yourself. And then how much of a hipster you are is to whatever degree you let that influence your feelings and decisions. Though maybe I'm just projecting when I say this, since I speak out of what I view to be my own hipster tendencies.

I haven't watched the original Dragon Ball anime since I was in grade school (I'm currently 22), but I have been reading the manga recently, and I would definitely recommend reading it. Toriyama is brilliant at choreographing a fight on paper; there is a strong sense of flow and continuity between each motion. The panel compositions are simple and easy to follow. I like One Piece, but sometimes I feel like Oda crams too much stuff into a single panel, so I kind of lose track of what's going on. I never get that feeling reading Dragon Ball.

I actually found your channel from the Asterisk rants/analysis, and happen to personally love Sword Art Online. Once I started watching more of your videos realized the nature of your opinions and analysis, though, I watched those and enjoyed those too. I didn't actually disagree with most of what you said, though you also didn't change my mind on the matter. We just weigh things differently. When you made your comment in the Asterisk War and SAO comparison video, about that single image from SAO being better than the entirety of Asterisk War, that really struck a chord with me. That's along the lines of something I would say. You're honestly the first anime critic on KZbin I've been able to stand following, but I wanted to offer a counterpoint to your comment about people following from the SAO videos--you've gained followers from trashing The Asterisk War as well!

I wouldn't worry about such dumb labels. I've been posting in the 3x3 threads for years and at first I used to be called pretentious, then hipster and lately boring. The last two kind of contradict each other so you can see those claims are really based on biased and produced by people who get angry and insecure too easily. I mean I remember how someone got really irritated because he claimed someone else was a hipster for him putting a tile on his 3x3 that according to him was "trying to be as obscure as possible", it was actually just the Laughing Man logo from SAC. Also, I know that list you posted at the end and I think there are a lot of interesting works there if you can enjoy anime just for unique visuals. But then some are just great in general like Rose of Versailles.

I did this with my list and it was between 96-260. That most likely has to do with my love for Shojo style anime as I notice even the popular slice of life anime are higher on the list in rank. I decided to check some of my favorites which are very obscure among my friend groups (to be fair, anime is unpopular among most my friends) and discovered that I'm not an anime hipster, either. Koe no Katachi, #127 in rank and #147 in popularity, one that I found through an Imgur post and a lot of reverse image searching. Its rank doesn't surprise me, it's really fucking good; its popularity did, though. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, #917 in rank (barely top thousand) and an astonishing (to me) #68 in popularity. It's been a while since I learned No Game No Life is actually quite popular, and there it is at #121 in rank and #15 in popularity. Akatsuki no Yona at a cozy #262 in rank and #198 in popularity. Actually pretty high on my favorites list, at #6. Shimoneta's a tad more hipster at #1,448 in rank and #236 in popularity. Not a shining star, but not too bad, either (it at least ranks higher than SAO II, _thank God_). And basically everything else I've ever liked sits higher. Does this mean I have a really good taste in anime or something? Must be, half of my decisions on next anime are informed by your videos.

MAL is not the mainstream. MAL is people enthusiastic enough about anime to go on the internet, sort through the japanese names of anime, find everything they've seen, and score everything they've seen. So many limiting factors obviously means that you sort away a good chunk of people. I don't expect the average 10 year old who watches shounen jump adaptations to be on mal, and that is not an insignificant part of all anime that gets watched. Also, looking at the extremes of the spectrum, like the top shows in popularity, and the shows at the top of your list are obviously going to be unrepresentative. more understanding can be had looking at all the 7 to 8 shows on your list, and comparing it to the MAL population, than from comparing all your 9 and 10 shows. Terrible methodology, probably right-ish conclusions.
@fidomaster4478 жыл бұрын
MAL basically represents what a majority of people feel about an anime. Even if these people are not on the site, most people who watch anime are generally pretty into it, and often will have a list. Also even if there are casual viewers who have only seen a few anime, most of them are the popular ones they have easy access to, like Death Note and other shows via Netflix, Hulu, Toonami, etc., which again, very popular and generally well-liked. I can't think of an anime that people I know (who aren't into anime) have seen and have had vastly different opinions on the show than the MAL consensus.

I mean, a lot of people would probably call me that, since my disdain for a lot of mainstream stuff is pretty distinct. I more often than not refuse to watch a lot of mainstream shows, and I mostly stick to the cult hits. But there's a really good reason for that. The cult hits are the ones that tend to find their niche, the ones that know exactly what they want to be, and thus they're the most focused, directed, and visionary works. Since they don't have to worry about balancing the desires of a large audience, they can just be whatever they want, which often leads to higher quality storytelling.
@erebuspratini26838 жыл бұрын
My guess about the "hipster" label is that it's not so much about if you "prefer obscure stuff" and more about you "frequently disliking stuff that is popular at the moment". Not that I agree or not with that label (taste is subjective and all), but you focused more on the first half of the argument and the "top overall" list doesn't cover very well the broad range of anime that was recently released (it can take a while to more recent anime to caught up in terms of popularity with older anime).

I appreciated how it didn't escalate as excessively as DBZ and I felt it had a much stronger story and characters in general. I do still have a fondness for DBZ though and it's satisfying on a more shallow fun level, while in my opinion dragonball while still fun too is a little more emotionally satisfying. Dragonball Z was a real endurance match if you watched it on Toonami. They'd air a saga or so and then have to go back and re-run the ENTIRE show they had so far while they dubbed more episodes. I've probably seen everything up through the first Frieza fight at least 4-5 times because of how many times they re-ran the show from the start. I really enjoyed both DBZ and Kenshin as a kid. Kenshin is still totally worth watching. DBZ I would say I liked the original dub more than the Kai version, but that may just be nostalgia talking.

Could you make a video on what is directing? I always hear stuff like this show has interest directing or good directing and no one elaborates. I've been watching anime for 7ish years and consuming anime review and discussions for just as long and still have the weakest idea of what directing actually is. Is it camera angles, use of color, making sure your animators script writing and music creators don't fuck up? I don't know because no ones ever elaborated and just use the cheap cop out like saying "this show had interesting directing" to tack on to the pro list of a show with out explaining them selfs.
@Trixiethegoldenwitch8 жыл бұрын
I recommend watching Shirobako for at least a general sense of what every anime staff member does. I do think that "good directing" is a cop-out, but it's also kind of everything, since a director is ultimately in charge of everything on a project. I think people usually just mean cinematography though, and can be confusing directing with storyboarding in some cases.

To add onto what digibro says, a lot of times the elements of good directing is only evident if you've absorbed multiple pieces that a director has worked on and gotten a sense of their stylistic flair. For example, Ikuhara's work involves complex thematic ideas told through metanarratives and surreal symbolism that represents abstract ideas (the apple and penguindrum in penguindrum, the interspecies divide, court, and "phantom wuthering" of Yurikuma, and the fairytale that begins every episode of Utena). However, this method of thinking only really applies when we have an "auteur" director, specifically a director whose style bleeds through into every work they direct: some good examples in modern american film are Wes Anderson and David Lynch while in Anime we have Masaaki Yuasa and Hideaki Anno as some other examples. It's not really evident in a vacuum, e.g we look at just one movie or show and say "good direction", but rather something that comes out of a study of a director's work.

1st, let me say you make GREAT videos. Do you come off as an Anime Hipster?.... sometimes. the only way I can say that you come off as an anime hipster is how you Name Drop. An analogy? Well, if we were discussing A Stephen King book, you would also name drop the Editor and Distributor as well. But I guess that's just an in depth love of the art form that goes deeper than most.

Hey Digi, I can't help but wonder, how do you evaluate anime in depth? I mean, do you watch it more than once or do you evaluate it based on what you thought or what you remember from watching it on the first time?

I always find it weird hearing this question because it honestly depends on where you live when you say "Your taste is mainstream" or "Your taste is hipster-like/non-mainstream." For example, Dog of Flanders. Well-beloved in Japan and some European countries. If I said I loved Dog of Flanders, my tastes would be "non-mainstream" because I live in America, where not many anime fans would have heard of it. While I understand it is an old show, but it does show how licensing in specific locations affect what exactly becomes mainstream. Ever think how things would be if Cowboy Bebop or Gundam Wing or Dragon Ball Z never got licensed in America? The mainstream of America would look quite different and the term "hipster" would be relative to that mainstream opinion. But honestly, my friends just think you are a hipster because of appearance. Sunglasses, full-beard, and being an otaku room makes it look like you are a hipster. Though when they hear you like K-on or Gintama, that throws out the hipster image completely.

I would recommend you watch Dragon Ball in Latin american Spanish with subtitles, it sounds better than the original japanese tapes and it's pretty well acted and it wasn't censored

Tbh I think the shit audio quality of Dragon Ball adds to the charm of it. It has such a nostalgic feel, even though I never grew up with it.

Come on, most people who say you're an anime hipster don't take their opinion as seriously as to mean anything other than they think your /glasses/ and maybe ex-beard are hipster, not your taste. And yeah, like many other people in comments, I watch you because you watch everything and have pretty good analysis of huge shows, and also smaller shows. For someone with a full time job, this is a pretty useful channel to know what I might like to watch in my limited anime time.

Sort of Digi, but I'm self aware of this and still love your videos because they're interesting and entertaining. It's kind of your whole shtick and is what makes your videos so interesting to begin with. What I've noticed is you create a narrative and "cherry pick" to strengthen your argument, while ignoring (or overlooking) anything that might contradict it. When the video is over I'm almost convinced you're absolutely right because of how well spoken and articulated your argument is. Yet, when I really think about it I began to find flaws in your narrative and end up disagreeing with you on a handful of topics (perfect example is the "turning your brain off video"). However, I'm not arrogant enough to scream "unsubscribe!" because your views don't have to perfectly align with my own to enjoy your content. Actually I like having different opinions being presented to me because it's a way to challenge my own positions instead of just having them validated and reinforced. Keep doing you Digibro, I watch your videos almost everyday for your genuine personality especially the "After Dark" channel. My post maybe seem a little unrelated to your original video, but in some ways it's not. You create a narrative and run to the hills with it, and perhaps don't take enough time to look at the counter argument of your position (or how it could be contradicted). In some ways this unwavering dedication to your opinions comes off a little elitist, but it doesn't mean your taste in anime makes you a hipster, and is one of the reasons I watch your channel to begin with.

If you ever go back to Dragon Ball I'd recommend giving the anime a shot, there's not a ton of filler, and most of what is there is written in well and if you haven't read the manga you'd have a hard time telling where filler began and ended. Also, some of the filler episodes are just fantastic. Who knows, maybe by the end of it you won't hate Masako Nozawa as Goku.

Digi, for some time I have a question that is bothering me a lot and I think it would be perfect if you were to answer, there are many series that people classified as "edgy" At this point people say it so much that lost its meaning, but I would like you to describe exactly what it is "edgy", which it is and is not. People already use it only for use at this point I would appreciate an answer to this, which is bothering me for some time.
@Trixiethegoldenwitch8 жыл бұрын
To me, "edgy" mostly means when a show is going out of its way to be violent or to have dark themes, but doing so in a shallow way that less explores the themes than using them for shock value/to look cool.
@ivangalv8 жыл бұрын
"using them for shock value/to look cool" That was the answer I was looking, that explains clear and simple.
@electricant558 жыл бұрын
The problem is that this is sarcastic meaning of edgy. Edgy means simply innovating, pushing the genre forward, on the bleeding edge.

Digibro, your taste are normal (Compared to most anime watchers) but you've got through so much anime that what you like encompasses what most people like, so when someone likes a certain anime you've probably already seen a better executed similar anime, thus they call you a hipster for not agreeing with their subjective opinion. MAL rates on popularity. So Mainstream can be defined as mob consensus, it's subjective as individuals have varied taste though all like good things . The mainstream can also refer to what's in the current season or other arbitrary decisions factors.
