Because the people who disagree are inherently bias and are only looking to confirm their bias and completely ignore counter information. Those people will list "a million" ways they are the same while ignoring other people listing "a million" ways they are different, focusing only on the similarities just so they can prove the rest wrong and "win" the argument. People as a whole dislike being wrong, love being agree'd with, and want their likes/dislikes/feelings/thoughts to be validated by others. Sometimes I even sometimes feel the need to say SOMETHING about a topic I have an opinion on because sometime sit feels like, if i dont actually put my idea/thought/feelings out there then it feels like I never had them in the first place.
@CtisGaming7 жыл бұрын
Everyone understands that aligned plots and elements don't make two series equal. The problem is that doesn't actually answer the question of "why do you like Log Horizon and not Overlord?". It's basically asking for the same type of video explaination that Digi first did to introduce how Log Horizon handled its subject matter better than SAO and receiving the answer "I have a lot of other reasons" instead. It's unsatisfactory, is nebulous, and a long form way of not actually answering the question.
@shino42427 жыл бұрын
But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if he did or didn't go into detail because the shows ARE different and simply have a similar premise/genre. So I don't see why it's so baffling he could like one and not the other in the first place. Essentially, I don't undersatnd why the question was needed in the first place.
@better86557 жыл бұрын
Log Horizon, and Overlord treat their situations differently. One actively tries to get away from the MMO rules, and change them. The other keeps with the MMORPG rules, and even uses JRPG mechanics. I personally love both series for different reasons. I'm intrigued by the way the world works in Overlord, and enjoy the learning about the game mechanics within. Log Horizon is more character driven, and I have more interest in what their motivations are going to do to the world, rather than the world itself.

Log Horizon is a story about characters stuck in a game world, trying to live long enough to get out. Overlord is about an online god who finds himself physically transported into a game world that he now plans on making his bitch. Literally the only thing they have in common is the "in a game world". Personally I love Overlord, and kinda like Log Horizon.

I was kinda thinking that too. I like Overlord but its still somewhat trashy, SAO trashy. Its just some people just dont have the ability or knowledge to recognize bgenrlly bad or generally ood anime in terms of combined factors of story, animation, cinematography and the elements that make each one. A lot of times just experience watching media can fix that, your shit tastes, but you can go learn about through in depth study and be better.

To be fair, even though the comment is just a jokey meme, its actually relevant considering one of the thing digi pointed out about asterisk wars that bothered him was how the narrative setting didn't seem to match the actual visual setting we're given since the city seems like a thriving utopia while constantly being told by main girl how fucked the city is. And this is in no small part due to the background always being bright and "happy" looking. the backgrounds make the world seem totally fine. more than fine.

When you get down to it, almost every single creative decision between these two shows in narrative, style, character design, presentation, and everything else are polar opposites, almost as if they were mirrored images. I totally understand the background debate because I've always been very partial to painted backgrounds, although they are frequently cited as not blending well with the characters (such as in this very video). I don't necessarily mind the combination of artstyles, nor do I think they have to blend well together, as long as they feel appropriate for what the show is trying to accomplish individually. Hai to Gensou no Grimgar had relatively sparse character animation, but made up for it in stellar watercolor scenery of the town and goblin hideout (which themselves look like actual locations with layouts rather than individual floors) and a folksy acoustic guitar BGM created entirely by (K)NoW_NAME, the same band who would later go on to create all the tracks of Sakura Quest. Granted, I am a complete sucker for folk songs on string instruments, (Children of the Whales is killing it this season), but Grimgar's individual aspects work well with the show's overall appeal, and I consider the character animation to be its worst aspect anyways.

I had the same experience. I liked one anime (Toradora) and felt meh about another (Just Because! from this season) and wasn't sure why. Both stories are high school romance dramas, but the main characters of JB! are generally well adjusted kids who seem relatively normal and have relatively middle of the line concerns (moving schools, romance, clubs, what to do after college, etc). Toradora on the other hand features two extremely maladjusted kids with Ryuchi and Taiga. Their main concern is learning how to connect with and get along better with their classmates, as well as learn to connect with their crushes. It's something more obvious than background art, but the same concept of "shows that fit into the same overarching genre aren't necessarily similar" fits.

I will have to consider it then, but having Prime is SO GOOD (for a household, single/solo-living is different) that it it's surprising to me people consider the cost of Prime WITH Anime Strike, rather than separate. Cause most functioning households (in America) already have Prime. Other services (Netflix, Crunchyroll) thus cost slightly more, offset with how very much they offer. But if the only good thing they have is MiA it's not worthwhile.

It was Digi stating his dislike of Overlord in spite of the similarities to beloved LH that made me ask. I get that a lot of small details in character/plot/execution can totally change an anime from the superficial similarities. Alas, I don't have to time to go try an anime which has a negative connotation (from someone who's recommendation/taste I trust, but don't blindly follow) without a compelling comparison on why I Might like it. I was about to bring out my personal taste on not dealing with Manga, time/cost comparison, when I realized you said LN. That's much more up my alley, and like all good novel to visual conversions there is stuff that gets left behind. It really irked me that Kizumonogatari didn't showcase Arraragi's internal monologue nearly as well as the series did. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look at getting ahold of the LN
@aquaka7 жыл бұрын
In the last 8 years or so I have ran into the problem of getting frustrated when recommending anime to friends. I have been watching anime since the 80s and have always been the "anime guy" to my friends, but lately I have been realizing I watch media for different reasons that most if not all my social circles do. They watch media to relax, be entertained, or "turn their brain off". While I watch media to get something out of it, maybe strong feelings, maybe make me ponder for a time, or some of them, change my life and the way I see and think of things. This has lead to people around me being drawn to shows I consider less appealing , SAO, Akame ga Kill, Re:Zero, all the FATEs, etc , while I am pushing towards things I consider awesome such as Anything Trigger, slow burns like Monster, Rakugo, comedies like Konosuba or even shonen like My Hero aca, as opposed to their new favorite show Black Clover... ughhh. I feel 10 years ago I used to be able to recommend anime fairly accurately because back then anime that had substance was also entertaining and vice versa, so both audiences could merge. Not saying that shows with substance today are not entertaining, they for sure are. But we have a sea of ONLY flashy and entertaining anime that has allowed for numbing down of the audience from seeking something with a little more depth.

I feel like the people who don't understand how you could like Log Horizon while not liking Overlord haven't actually watched either of them. Overlord, at least what has been shown in the anime, is about a single high level player who was transported into a world that is very similar to the game he was playing-at least to the extent that all his magic, skills, and items still work. It has very little to do with politics, especially the politics involving a massive group of immortal players who have to figure out how to get along with each other and the neighboring kingdoms at least until they figure out how to leave...and that's assuming they'll still *want* to leave by the time they figure that out. I like Overlord, but I like it for very different reasons than I do Log Horizon.

Overlord is my favorite animu franchise BUT the anime and manga adaptations really don't do it justice. They cut out a lot and make it more about the action. The original LN is really, really tactical with huge paragraphs of tactical planning and exploring the lore, etc. I was just talking with a friend about how a scene was butchered in the manga because it was about subtle actions during a meeting hugely affecting the mood and tension of the room which doesn't work at all when the main character of the scene is a bug man that can't display any emotion: in the LN the scene is from his point of view so you can see how he's feeling. At the start the bug man is so nervous he like twitches slightly when he kneels and that makes everyone shoot daggers at him, they couldn't portray that with any clarity in the manga. I just wanted to say that because I'm crazy about the series. I really like it but I can't blame anyone who doesn't like the anime because B O Y the LN is hard to adapt without destroying the pacing.

It's a shame that you couldn't watch Shinsekai Yori because of its esthetic. It has its own atmosphere i guess. :/ I hope you will give it a try one day, maybe... ^^

Now that I have gotten the factors of makes a show enjoyable, I would need to remember to search for them when I’m enjoying a show and want to know why I am enjoying that show.

I wouldn't mind seeing an after dark rant vid about the differences between Log Horizon and Overlord. Preferably inebriated.

Digibro - a public plea. I noticed that Musekinin Kanchou Tyolor is listed as 3 eps in, and also Great Teacher Onizuka is listed at 24 eps in. Please, consider watching to completion especially Tylor. That anime is so different, and may be a classic example of an anime that gets better the more you progress. At first it doesn't look at all special. When you finish it, you'll be a different person. It is something totally unexpected and NOT FOUND outright in the medium, packaged in the form of quirky space anime. To say that Tylor is underrated would be the dictionary definition of the word underrated. Thank you if you read this.

Holy Shit the timing on this video is just too good. Tomorrow I have to tell my friend why I don't like 'A silent voice' even though I like other animes in that genre with similar story lines.

Grimgar has Paint backgrounds

That moment when for a moment you think he forgot about the point of the video and just wanted to talk about backgrounds for a few minutes. I do really agree with the point of the video though, there are a lot of small things that go into basically all pieces of art, and hyper-focusing on one thing that makes a big difference just to make the point wasn't a bad idea at all, even if it wasn't hyper-effective.

Speaking of backgrounds and how people can like a series for its background, I absolutely loved Grimgar's backgrounds, it's a real shame that the studio that did those backgrounds went bankrupt

For me background art is nowhere near the most important thing to like or dislike about an anime. So your message in the video kinda missed although I got it and agree with it. Maybe do directing next?

@Digibro I love that you're constantly trying to justify your opinions, and I use your videos as a paragon of self-awareness. Keep being awesome!

Will you ever break down what makes good things in anime good and bad things bad? I've always been interested in your thoughtprocess or what you compare, say, the background art to be able to tell if it's good or bad.

I've been having gripes with the issue of people asking me what genres I'm into. I don't consume more of one genre than another, and have works I enjoy in all of them. This seems to confuse people a lot though. I had a teacher get confused when I told them I didn't like Steven King because I liked Lovecraft. They had assumed I liked all horror, when I really just liked the aesthetic choices of lovecraft. I don't care about concepts as much as I enjoy how concepts are carried out. I've thought about that a lot so this video really resonated with me. I have a lot more to say on the topic so maybe soon I'll make my own video on it.

I always had the idea that people *preferred* and that was the end of the story. Until I started using the internet properly and looked into "fandoms" and enthusiasts. I also got familiar with the concept of HATE.
