Rei is a hybrid human alien clone of Shinji's mom Perfectly normal
@JamesEDonaldson8 жыл бұрын
+Cool There's a crazy theory that Shinji is also like Rei. When Rei dies the next clone gets her soul, when Shinji kills Kaworu, the current Shinji becomes the next Kaworu. Sounds bonkers but kinda makes sense if you look at 1.11 Kaworu as EoE Shinji and 3.33 Kaworu as 2.22 Shinji. Makes random scenes like Kaworu looking at the old burnt Watermelon patch in 3.33 suddenly very important.

I think Shinji telling Misato she is "unladylike" is a justified response to her always telling him to "man up" or "act like a man" throughout the series. Not just her, also Asuka, but mostly Misato when trying to make him pilot the EVA. So I see Shinji's 'sexist' statement as sort of a sarcastic one, saying "oh so you always want me to adhere to gender stereotypes? Well here, let me judge you by gender stereotypes". Shinji makes another sarcastic response later in the series relating to this. He gains a lot of confidence after scoring high in the ratio tests and while trying to argue his point to act alone in a mission he reminds Misato that he was going to do a "man's job", or something similar to that. He was taking her gender stereotyping that has been happening throughout the series and flipping it on her for, finally, his own sake, and Misato is quite annoyed but accepting after he says this, because she knows its her fault for always telling him to conform to gender stereotypes that he is finally going to use her argument in a way that doesn't benefit her.
@Trixiethegoldenwitch9 жыл бұрын
+Yagami Raito Very interesting and solid point. I didn't really catch that Misato had been telling Shinji to man up, but now that you point it out it's pretty salient.
@trident272-m6q9 жыл бұрын
+Digibro Thanks :) I only noticed it myself the first time I rewatched the series. There's many lines from Misato and Asuka that tell Shinji how he should be more manly. Misato is usually just trying to motivate Shinji, whereas Asuka is usually just shaming Shinji for being wimpy or shy in everyday situations. Kind of speaks for how that sort of gender stereotyping can happen at home or at work.
@Zaldermenia9 жыл бұрын
+Yagami Raito Well, to be fair, although his 'unladylike' response was indeed sarcastic and telling on how she treats him, the point when Shinji later on says 'it's a man's job' (resulting in Misato's saying he'll be reprimanded later for said statement) was that he consequently failed miserably and got sucked-up by Leliel, the spherical black/white shadow angel--I think it was more a depiction of how relying on hubris and bravado can take someone down, no matter who they are.
@trident272-m6q9 жыл бұрын
+Zaldermenia I agree with you. I see that scene as containing both a depiction of the dangers of relying on bravado as well as containing a sly dig at Misato to make her acknowledge how her gender stereotyping can be an issue. It was the bravado Shinji was running on that gave him the confidence to talk back to Misato and remind her of her harmful gender stereotyping anyways. He never would have spoken up about it if he wasn't still overconfident from scoring high in the sync-ratio tests. I think both our interpretations are valid and can be accepted without picking one over the other :)
@Zaldermenia9 жыл бұрын
+Yagami Raito Oh yes, definitely! I'm sorry if it seemed like I was disagreeing; I was indeed trying to complement. That bit was quite obviously showing how both Misato constant pressure on Shinji (based on gender roles) makes him believe something he's not ('a real man') and how when he tries to actually be that (by replying to her and charging into action), he fails miserably at the task at hand. It's quite sad really, just when he gets to actually attain some self-respect and pride, he's dragged down because of it...

Rei's comment that she's "connected to all people" was also probably a reference to her being the vessel for the soul of Lilith, the progenitor of humanity (spoiler alert). As a first time viewer of the series, cryptic comments like this were definitely a cause for curiosity since they seemed very odd coming from a character who was anything BUT strongly connected with other people.

I'd argue Shinji isnt sexist towards Misato but pointing out her flaws and that she is immature and can hardly take care of herself - considering her lifestyle the first day he got there and how she acts when not at work. And, in living with her and working with her he sees past her sexual appeal - unlike his friends. In this he sees her for her and not for anything else. His friends are largely fawning over her because of lust and not knowing her personally - Shinji even tries to point this out to the two boys when they are saying something is wrong with him.

I mean, it's possible to do both things. It's possible to be sexist while also thinking you're offering good faith criticism. And yes, at the same time he has seen her in a far less attractive context than his friends, seeing her at her best. Both of their reactions are ultimately wrong because they focus only on one of her aspects. In this specific situation, Shinji doesn't see the caring, the bravery, the idealism and strength of character hiding under those flaws, while his friends don't see the flaws.

I love this video. Everything pointed out are why I have such an 'artist crush' on Anno. He uses his medium to tell something original and thought provoking in an industry that can't find a strong footing without pandering to (let's face it) sexist perverts. And this is even after he's already struggled with his own personal hangups. He just keeps doing it. He doesn't quit. In Studio Khara, it even looks like he's getting spunkier. Fighting back, you might say.
@violetraven83236 жыл бұрын
I could not agree more, my cynicism towards anime has skyrocketed as response to the floods of shameless pandering and shallow-at-best writing. I always come back to the classics and there creators, as there the final true hope in this industry I feel. Hayao Mizaki(creator of Ghibli's spirited away and so much more) and Hajime Yatate(creator of Cowboy Bebop) are amazing, yet Anno's my man. Due to him never failing to call out the pathetic fetishization and escapism in the medium, that's reached hellish epidemic levels. Along with just admiring his persistence, if I was drowning in a depressive state-like hell would I even CONSIDER slaving over a project barely anyone cared about. But yeah, Anno's so admirable and his work and him as a human being just makes him so near and dear to my heart . And encourages myself that if he could do it, I at the very least have a shot.

Please, for the love of god, definitely keep making these. It's the entire reason why I finally jumped onto this series. I watched your first video, and then watched the episode, and I was blown away at all the details I knew I would've missed if I had just watched the episode, and nothing more. I'm getting used to the routine of watching an episode or two and then immediately afterwards, watching the video on your channel that corresponds with it. This allows me to further cement my own raw, personal feelings about the episode right then and there while it's still fresh in my mind, and well as bear witness to a more detailed, analytical aspect of the episode, which I no doubt missed for the most part, because small details (The kind that appear small, but have larger implications) usually go unnoticed by me, so I feel like these videos help me obtain a new kind of experience overall.

One of the subtle things I like that show that the awesome sides of Shinji, Misato, and Rei are notably different from Gendo's blatant confidence in the beginning is that while Gendo let go of the plug door lever for a second due to the burn, Shinji doesn't. They both look pained the same way, making it all the more obvious the disruption to the parallel was intentional.

The characterisation is really what makes Eva stand out for me. There are other important elements as well but if not for that I don't think it would be memorable as it is. That's what makes it different from most other anime. The characters in most series just aren't believable at all. I know they're cartoons so it's not going to be completely believable, but even so there's very little effort to give characters at least some realistic traits.
@BestWayKilla9 жыл бұрын
Funny, because to me, the characterization is the absolute worst part of EVA. It basically created, almost to a man, the single most unlikable collection of people ever assembled. If that was what they intended to do, then they succeeded like no one has ever succeeded before or since.
@OrtegaSeason9 жыл бұрын
BestWayKilla Whether characters are intended to be likable or unlikable doesn't have anything to do with "characterisation". the two things aren't related. Characterisation is the process by which the character's mind-set/character traits are communicated to the audience ie the extent to which the audience is made familiar with them.
@BestWayKilla9 жыл бұрын
+DeCipher That might be so, but I didn't exactly find that to be believable. At least 90% of the characters are, in my opinion, completely irredeemable. That's fine for a few characters, but the vast majority? I don't see EVA as the brilliant commentary on the human condition a lot of people do. In fact, I find just about every character to be laughably one-dimensional
@OrtegaSeason9 жыл бұрын
BestWayKilla" At least 90% of the characters are, in my opinion, completely irredeemable." - How are you defining irredeemable? " In fact, I find just about every character to be laughably one-dimensional" - You're kidding right?
@BestWayKilla9 жыл бұрын
DeCipher Nope. They basically found the most basic, stereotypical psychological themes (mostly Freudian, which anyone who understands psychology at any length disregards completely) and built characters around them. All they accomplished was creating a bunch of people with crippling personality disorders. I find them to be just awful people with awful personalities who project their own problems onto one person, that being Shinji. As far as being irredeemable, I find the characters to have no redeeming characteristics that would make up for their personalities. Other than a handful, none of them resonate with me at all. I'm sorry I don't revere EVA as the brilliant work of art a lot of people do, but that's how I feel.

Your videos are always so insightful and you point out such interesting commentary on the anime you're analyzing, and your Eva videos have been some of my favorites. I particularly liked how you talked about the characters being ordinary people doing extraordinary things rather than just extraordinary people. Episode 7 was where I really got a sense of the characters just doing their jobs and what they had to even though it was seemly heroic and slightly crazy. For me, Misato and Ritsuko went to that meeting it really gave the sense of "this is just our job" since they both were unhappy about it and it was a pretty mundane thing compared to the shenanigans of the previous episodes. Great video!

i was talking with cherax about what it means for a piece to be a deconstruction of a genre. we started off with the question: is nichijou a deconstruction of slice of life? to determine what a deconstruction is, we examined two pieces: evangelion and madoka my definition is that a deconstruction subverts the core foundation of the genre while keeping genre's presentation intact. cherax offered that a deconstruction was a recontextualization of the genre's core foundation. i proposed that madoka deconstructs the magical girl genre by twisting the core element of magical powers from being a blessing that uplifts and empowers the girls to being a curse that destroys and kills them. two other subversions are: the ubiquitous magical creature turns out to be the slave master as opposed to the companion or assistant, and, as you stated, that the work follows a series-long-arc, as opposed to the episodic norm. the presentation is kept in tact via the girls themselves, transformation sequences, etc. i proposed that evangelion deconstructs the mecha genre by deemphasizing core element of mechs battling mechs, and, as you have so eloquently show in all of these videos, focuses heavily on the characters themselves, their interactions, chemistry, feelings, motivations, faults, and humanity. i've heard it said that fans of the mech genre will watch anything so long as it has cool looking robots destroying each other. evangelion presents us with relatively few battles, and they are all concluded quite quickly, with the humans, in all their glory and all their weakness, take the center stage in this work. the presentation of evangelion as a mecha anime is achieved via... the titular mechs. the core foundation of slice of life can be found in nichijou's english title: "my /ordinary/ life". azumanga daioh is a phenomenal example of slice of life at its most distilled. i believe that nichijou subverts this by presenting the extraordinary as ordinary, and vice versa. cherax offered that nichijou may be more of a parody of slice of life than a deconstruction. what are your thoughts on these three works as deconstructions?

If feel like while I do agree with this show's stance on humanity, I feel like I can take it one step farther. I believe that each human, man, woman, child from anywhere in the world IS exceptional. Not can be, not could be, IS. We are a vast, amazing kind of thing that as far as we know, as fr as we've seen, is totally unique. The amount of terror and hate we wage is vastly outdone by our capacity for compassion, love and life. The fact that we even have the devide between good and evil is an illistration of just how morally upstanding we are, or at least that we strive to be.

This, so much. It's sad that people think Evangelion is a show about how humanity sucks, because it's the opposite. It's a show that doesn't shy away from representing humanity's problems, but it's also a show about how all of us, despite having problems, fears and neuroses we pretend we don't have, sometimes making bad decisions, or not managing to understand each other, are fundamentally capable of great things, and we SHOULD have trust and faith in each other and ourselves - and it's when this trust and faith lacks that bad things happen. They don't happen because we as humans are bad, they happen because we as humans don't realize we CAN do better, and we should try to. For ourselves AND for others.

It is an interesting take, but I am not entirely sure I agree with your final stance on Misato, Shinji, and Rei being normal people. - In the case of Rei, we are told by Kaworu in the director's cut of ep 24 that Rei is the "human vessel" of Lilith (the progenitor of human/"normal" terrestrial life) while also being made from the remains of Yui (a genius bioengineer and daughter of a prominent member of SEELE -- a woman who worked on creating the first evas and found a way to live inside Unit-01). - Shinji is in essence the child of Yui and Gendo, with the latter being the highest ranking person in NERV. The genius and ambition of Shinji's parents cannot be understimated. - We also know Misato being the daughter of Dr. Katsuragi (who developed some genius theory that the S^2 Engine is named after) cannot be overlooked. She is also a lieutenant colonel who ultimately takes on the rank of Major in the show. Not a feat that many reach, basically serving as 4th in command (after Gendo --> Fuyutsuki --> Ritsuko) of the organization tasked to "protect humanity." The equivalent of having these sorts of parents in the real world would be like having the most important scientists, leaders, and spiritual figures that were involved in the greatest human crisis of the time as ancestors. Not just inheriting their influence and environment from being their kids, but also their genes, and if more esoteric ideas are accepted [their intentions, goals, dreams, and spirit as well] To me, Evangelion speaks more to how the previous generation engenders a compounded layer of pain, suffering, and psychological issues for the current generation, which strangely gives them the ability to show that incredible "everyday people" courage in critical (humanity-saving) moments. I think there is a reason why so few people were ever chosen to be pilots out of the already small pool of candidates, why Shinji's sync-ratio is already so incredibly high from the start of the show and continued to improve (most of the time), and why Shinji (along with Asuka) seem to be the first humans to remember their identity and will themselves back to human form out of instrumentality. Of course, this isn't getting into Asuka and Ritsuko, who are obviously geniuses in their own right. Ultimately I think the point you were trying to make still rings true for the series, but we should not discount that these are extraordinary, legendary characters put in extraordinary, legendary circumstances. And how it [often] takes intense psychological trauma to surmount it

Curses! Why didn't this show up in my subscription feed?? The only character in Evangelion that I have the hardest time relating to, (yes, even harder a time than Gendo) is maybe Rei. I don't hate her or anything, it's just that her deal is just so out there. To see yourself as just sorta this thing that can be easily replaced. To only have piloting the Eva and no other hobbies. I just. WHAT IS THIS???? WHAT IS MY LIFE?????

Not to mention that NERV improvises, ripping the heat shield off an SSTO to serve as a shield against an angel's particle beam. How do they come up with this?

Great observations about the possible sexism of some of the characters, I didn't fully catch that when initially viewing this. It's also good to hear about the humanism of the series, considering how grim it can be. On the other hand, considering how things turn out in The End though, I wonder how the failed efforts of humanity are supposed to be viewed per the story. Kicking ass doesn't save you from being turned into a puddle of LCL?

Man, I'm really glad that I started watching this series! I do agree with you, seeing human/weak/flawed characters doing something badass feels all the more impactful: going through an emotional breakdown, then badass-ening(?) up, like in Re: Zero ep 7. Oh man, episode 7...but otherwise, I'm really like Evangelion!

Feels good to finally hear somebody else say something about Shinji's heroism. Sadly though, this means that I would absolutely be called out for plagiarism if I ever actually made the video I had in mind about Shinji growing into a battle-hardened hero and NOT being a pussy.

Just one thing: you said "In the end, when Misato stops the robot....", but If you watch the episode again, you can watch closely and see that despite Misato's efforts at bruteforcing down the pistons, the Robot was deactivated BEFORE it reached the white safe line. A bit later Ritsuko tells Gendo, it all went well, despite misato doing unnecessary stuff... In other words, JET-ALONE's deactivation was most probably Ritsuko's doing, but not misato's at all
