I don't really see value in watching it all, it mostly results in fairly little enjoyment, mainly on a seasonal basis, going through more interesting shows throughout the years can be far better. Especially now, as the percentage of vapid fan-service shows seems to be bigger then ever.

I feel like this would also help the public perception of anime. I feel like most people (in the west) think that anime is all trashy, perverted garbage, and it does not help that there are a bunch of shows that reinforce that view. Not that i have anything against fan service in general, but that there are good and bad ways to do it.

As someone who actually doesn't watch anime, I can say that the preponderance of shit anime is definitely a problem for me. I used to watch anime years ago, until I burned out on the whole thing and just gave up. Too much repetitive, formulaic trash. I know there are good animes, but once I got fed up I just never bothered to try to find it anymore. I keep meaning to give it another try, but even after roughly 10 years there still isn't a very strong draw in for me.

I made a sort of compromise: I listed the shows this season that either get recommended to me or that jumped out, and set them for specific days. All I hear is Anime is turning into what Steam is for games; Tons of saturation with zero control. I don't want to play 100 games to find the "good games" in them. I play the good games people already found, the gems like Undertale, or the big titles that have a good chance of BEING good already... The anime I've watched, which is a hansful, are all from YOUR recommendations mixed with my interests to best weed out the chance of wasting my time, which I HATE to do (because you put it in clear terms in another video time is not to be wasted.)

yeah but the problem with that is that you have to find the good big titles too; whether you liked fallout 4 or not you can clearly see a mixed reception alongside Civ VI (which currently has a far smaller playerbase than Civ V), and you'd have a hard time convincing anyone that either Call of duty: WW II or Infinite warfare were good games (both massive).

Before I discovered your channel, I didn't know names like Trigger, Gainax, Madhouse, UFOTable, A1 or any of that shit. To me it was all just "anime". I couldn't tell you the difference between Inuyasha and Clannad, other than the drastically different settings and genres they inhabit. The only way I knew to find new shows was my MAL recommendations, and suggestions from a friend who had seen way more shows than I had. I'm honestly a huge fan of your idea to give endorsements to top creators to talk about the best shows. That way, people like me who don't know what to watch, and have a channel they trust, can have a way to watch really great shows and cut the bullshit.

'No one is watching Love Live' Digi, I feel like you've made a major error in this video. At it's core, I agree with it, too much garbage is being made. But you're looking at it from a western anime fan perspective. Which is only natural, because you're a western anime fan. But just because something isn't popular on My Anime List doesn't mean it's not unpopular. I live in Japan right now and Love Live is still *massive*. At the end of the day, the anime market panders to Japanese audiences. What they need to do is start figuring out a better way to make their anime more profitable to their own people. (Also Classicaloid is totally underrated and deserved to be made, just saying)

What you're describing as a better alternative is how Hollywood currently works. A studio makes one movie a year that costs $250 million. They bet all their resources. They put all of their eggs in one basket. And because of that they don't take risks, and when one of their movies flop, it hurts. Wouldn't it be better to make twenty movies with a budget of $10 million that consistently make their money back, and now and then one of is a surprise hit that makes ten times its money back? Wouldn't you feel more secure about the future of your business that way? I would.

I feel like it's the 1000s of hours that no one asked for is how we end up with the few hours of genius no one expected. If it wasn't for that anime could easily become like most of Hollywood. Just a couple every a year, all passable, nothing amazing other than the animation. I'm not trying to say that anime is so much better than Hollywood or anything, but it was the unpractical nature that attracted me to anime originally. If there were less shows, the amount of variation would would also be less. We would more than like end up with 10 SAOs and nothing else

We are experiencing within these past 2 decades what LITERALLY every other creative narrative medium suffers from once it can be consumed on a large scale. High saturation. When you think all the way back to the printing press think of how much more saturated the book market became only a few decades after it's invention. The reason anime has now taken off harder than it has before is the rise of the internet, computers and cable TV. Before, anime had to appeal to certain audiences to secure time slots on stations and guarantee profit. Now any smaller studio with good tech set up can produce clean looking anime for minute time slots that may be within any given channel that's willing to support them, let alone entire channels purely dedicated to anime or internet consumers. The book, music, movie, and TV industry have all already evened out moreso in terms of saturation and it shows that things the general public consider or are told are "good" will always rise to the top if they deliver to some degree. The big advantage now though is that if you want to consume any of those industries and find the right shit for you, it's possible. Discouraging the production of anime based on niche or production cost will always be a flaccid point in today's market.

Anime has always been about the 5 titles (or so) a year that you would watch again. It was when I jumped aboard this trainwreck in 1987 and it still holds true. It's just that there is so much more dross (and certainly avalaible dross) that one has to sift through to get to those titles. I mean, back in the 60's, there were entire seasons where nothing new debuted and that only slightly improved in the 70's. But outsiders trying to get the industry on a more solid footing? That leads to Neo Yokio....

this!! this has been my stance on anime for so long and i'm so glad it's actually being voiced! finding good anime can feel like sifting through a giant pile of hay just for two whole needles sometimes. i just wish the industry would open their ears, take a look at what made popular shows popular to begin with, and try to turn themselves around instead of wasting all their time and money and resources into producing dime-a-dozen shows that end up never going anywhere. it's a weird kind of frustration.
@ausaskar7 жыл бұрын
The japanese anime industry is not a Command Economy where huge resources can be funneled into large promising projects to dominate and rake in massive returns. It's a Free Market, a wild west of investors, studios, production committees and others, trying everything and anything to stake a claim to any share of the market they can get. Kemono Friends was made in an apartment, on a shoestring, based on a DOA IP, destined to join that ocean of "shit anime no one likes" but the team played those odds knowingly and won. Doubtless there are also many who play those odds and lose, but that's just how pursuing your dreams goes there's always the risk of failure.
@TheRibbonRed7 жыл бұрын
But then alongside with the Free Market, the money that goes inside it dictates whether it'll succeed or not. Most trash anime certainly failed to make ends meet. And there's always a certain limit a studio can hold out until they had to close shop.
@ausaskar7 жыл бұрын
Companies(studios) coming and going is the name of the game, it's an unavoidable reality. So long as consumer confidence remains to keep the market pool stable, the industry is not in danger of a 1983 videogame crash.

Hi Digibro, thanks for the interesting video! Definitely something to ponder about. I think with a lot of entertainment industries (which includes films and video games), production companies had always been challenged with a balancing act, namely between being innovative and being strategic. Good companies would want to come up with brand new products to put them ahead of the competition, but experimenting does not come cheap and often they need to continue making products that are sure to sell, even if it is generic. I understand that this means the seasonal lineup of anime may become diluted with bad-quality or disappointing shows, and I can see how it might have been more efficient for production companies to put all their energies into 'best shows' instead of spreading themselves too thin. It is common to see the '80/20' rule everywhere in the world, including in Anime (look up Zipf's Law, where the concept was first coined in the field of Linguistics). But I think if there is a problem of 'too much Anime' being made, I think it comes down to companies probably needing to tweak their funding allocations (maybe they didn't reach the sweet 80/20 spot, and are doing 90/10 instead). I think there is good reason why production companies can benefit from making extra shows - other than the funding reason, there is the 'Law of Diminishing Returns'. This is a principle in Economics where the more you spend on something, the less you gain from it. If a company were to pull out ALL funding from its less popular shows and invest it all to ONE excellent show, the marginal gains (aka popularity/profits) you get from that one excellent show is not worth as much as the amount they invested. For example, you may invest $10,000 into a show and get $5,000 (50%) profit from it. If you invest double that amount $20,000, you may get $7,500 profit, which is only 37.5%. It might be better to invest in a few shows which are 'good enough' rather than invest on one show to make it 'perfect'. Another reason why there might be 'too much Anime' could be because it is an attempt to fill very small niches. Some production companies may experiment for the sake of innovation, but in the end they want to get some returns for their efforts. Maybe they made a new kind of show (like the sidecar one), which may attract only a small demographic with very specific interests. But as long as they receive some returns, they can justify the show's existence. Especially if no other company is making anything similar, then they can get 'First Mover Advantage', which in itself can be worth keeping the show running. Being first and having no competition means you are guaranteed to get 100% of the market (hey, more profit!), and whether the show is very popular or not, you are probably going to disappoint someone if you stop making it. But again, it is a very delicate balancing act, and I guess as consumers of Anime we can only vote with our views - these kinds of shows tend to be more popular and profitable, and those kinds of shows don't. Good production companies would be continuously learning about the best ways to meet customer demand.

See, Digi, this isnt a bad point that youre trying to make. I agree with it on a basic level. There shouldnt be 60 new anime this season. Its absurd, its hurting the staff that are working their ass off for minimum wage, but at the same time rejecting any type of other non-deep title just because it doesnt appeal to you isnt an excuse to say "well what if we took all that and put into the good anime". Thats a preety bad way to illustrate a point, plus imagine all the gems that would be lost in the process. The industry would hold back on many adaptations of actual good work and the probability of actual good work getting adapted would get increasingly difficult if the industry focused on only the "great popular anime". Even more, theres value to be found in even the ecchi, but as i said, i do agree that there shouldnt be 60 anime every season, i just dont agree with the solution and the way you backed that up.

JelloApocalypse once said that to find good KZbin videos, you must sift through the murky water and get the best 10%, and then sift through that less murky water and get the best 10% of it, leaving you with only 1% of the total content, which is the only content worth watching. The same is true for anime.

Certainly not for that yuribait shitshow that was PriPri. FLFL is still great though.
@YakoffShmirnoff7 жыл бұрын
4Clubs Flip flap had just as much Yuri bait as PriPri
@4Clubs7 жыл бұрын
Untrue. FLFL was definitely yuri, not yuribait, and was centred in the relationship of Papika and Cocona. The show never needs to go full Sakura Trick to make this point. And whether you want to accept this yuri element as figurative or literal, it's completely on you, but there is a clear and concise romantic element to FLFL. PriPri on the other hand has a pretence of being yuri but deals this element either heavy-handedly or superficially. PriPri's tone is all over the place because it never has a clear objective and lacks narrative focus. Whatever "yuri" is there is only for purely cynical reasons.

You hit the nail right in the head. Me, as well as most of my friends who are into anime, have almost completely stopped following current season shows on a weekly basis precisely because we don't have the patience to waddle through hours of garbage, so we'll just wait for the anime gurus like you to give us your list of the best shows at the end of the season/year and then just binge the fucking things in a day or two. It's kinda sad because it's been at least a year since the last time I jumped into a hype train or joined in on a discussion on 4chan or MAL, and that used to be a big part of the enjoyment I got from watching anime...

An actually good video on the anime industry, that's pretty bloody refreshing, given how vapid those videos tend to be around youtube. It somewhat seems like as long as the big corporate studios have money, they will just throw it at any show that seem to follow some trends and hope that it will stick. But will it ever actually change for the better, instead of just failing, given how corparate Anime industry is, along with any Japanese entertainment industries, it will just fuck up again imediatelly afterwards, it's built on rotten foundations.

Okey, I'll be brutally honest with you Digi- this sounds like a healthy market competitions. Multiple studios, creating a wealth of products, all competing with each other and most of them dying in the process. New companies should form, new talents spotted, new market venues explored. That's how free market SHOULD be! The alternative is, well, a world of monopoly where you only have giant producers that make the same shit over and over and over again. Look at Hollywood for a good example. If the studios are not making enough money by making these shows... They will stop. And when they do, when the market is figured out, we, the consumers, get shafted. I'll be perfectly honest here Digi, if you ask me whose side I take- the product creators, or the consumers... I will always have to go with the consumers! And in large part BECAUSE it makes creators disillusioned with the horrible nature of the free market. The more disgruntled people who tried and failed to live the American Dream, the bigger the revolutionary army gets and all that. Also you talk about there needing to be more faith in good ideas and forgetting that faith doesn't pay off. Faith is something you DON'T want. Faith is something you try to squelch. So although I feel sorry for people doing this... This is going according to keikaku my friend. Translators note: keikaku means plan.
@allhandor7 жыл бұрын
i agree with you. though the competitive environment is pretty brutal there is none valid alternative at this moment. In soviet Russia they put all talented staff to make one project instead of each of them making their owns but instead of making good final product it was often pretty bad, probably 'couse the project was flawed from the beginning. If each of them could pursue theirs own unique idea maybe some could be successful.
@allhandor7 жыл бұрын
but do you really think it's a fault of the studios , it's us the consumers that eat that shit. I myself didn't enjoy flip flappers that much. While i can see a lot of work put into that show it just didn't strike me as entertaining show. And I don't think Asterisk is relevant anyway, I only hear digi talk about it ( the irony ) .

This is a really confused rant(which I guess is sort of the problem with rants in general). If word of mouth is working because quality eventually gets noticed due to how the anime community works, why would you want to bloat the show's marketing expenses? If shows are already being made well and on time, why would putting a bunch more workers make it any better? At best you get a "too many cooks" situation, at worst the show dies because regardless of how good something is, it has to make its money back and employing more people means they're spending more money without any value necessarily coming from it. Even more importantly, why would you want people responsible for terrible anime working on good anime?

Same problem plaguing Steam, the PS Store and the Xbox Store with digital games. No one's gonna play 70% of the crap that's put on there (with Steam it's probably closer to 99%). Indie devs have recently spoken about how well their games have been doing on Switch but that's cause there aren't as many indie games there (for now) and the other stores they put their games on are littered with so many bad small games that no one bothers looking for the good ones and instead just buys the big games they've already heard about, just like I go MAL when a season starts and only add shows within the Top 15/20.
@bloodmachine60497 жыл бұрын
Not really, this problem is far more impactful even.On steam, you have an unlimiten number of people producing game to an enormous buy limited audiance. In anime, you have a very limited number of people producing the enormous girth of shows for a yet smaller audience. It has limitations on both sides, not just one.
@TheRibbonRed7 жыл бұрын
True, but Steam's game devs has been complaining about that in relation to their ridiculously low income vs effort. Imagine how worse the Japanese animators has been in yet they've chosen to shut up about it for a long-ass time.

What you're suggesting would ultimately create an even more limited monopoly between two or three major studios, similar to telecoms in the US. I'm really not sure how you see this working any other way; if new smaller studios want to work their way up, they're not going to be able to outbid the large established studios for what you consider worthwhile anime - uh, mostly adaptations and sequels to adaptations, apparently - but they will get a chance to cut their teeth on other projects to at least build up a portfolio and show their talent. Studios like TRIGGER are nothing close to the norm, and even their original employer, Gainax, had Anno directing complete no-name forgotten shows for every Evangelion. It's not that your complaint isn't entirely valid, it's just that the alternative is the equivalent of Comcast animating nothing but safe top-ten-Jump titles. You even argue for consolidation - fuck no, someone from the US of all places should know how that ends up, with lazy lowest possible effort work because there's no competition. Just, no, my dude. You even then compare anime to live action television - come on, seriously? The medium that runs any daytime show all day? The complete opposite of what you're arguing for? Just a really badly thought out hot take.
@nidohime62337 жыл бұрын
Cryptic Corrrvus Speaking of wich, anime started as a competition between a couple of studios, Mushi Productions by Osamu Tezuka and Toei, they end creating one of the biggest crisis of anime industry but thanks for that many studios where born and maked many shows as we know today.

2 major counterpoints: 1. The mythical man-month. Even if we had a magical wand we could wave to know ahead of time which shows will be dogshit and which will be great (and it can't be emphasized enough that *we really, really don't*), the studios couldn't just transfer manpower and funding from the dogshit shows to the good shows and make the good shows that much better. Nine women can't complete a pregnancy in one month or make a 9x better baby. 2. The whole argument is based on numbers and opinions of Western anime audiences and specifically Western audiences with an online presence, but that's not how the industry makes money. MAL viewer counts?! Give me a break. Most of the money is from Japan, and most of the international money is from other Asian countries. Given that the West is only a few percentage points of the anime industry's revenue, for 1/5th of the anime released in a given season to appeal to us is frankly more than we should expect (and it's probably an overstatement--I doubt most of the anime released in a given season gets an English sub, dub, or MAL entry). It's not even enough to point out that our tastes don't cover all niches of anime consumption--in anime, *we're just another niche market*.
@ninezerotwo17787 жыл бұрын
Agreed; Digibro is kind of living in a bubble. The fact that the west is not even recognized enough to get seasonal shows broadcasted on niche channels indicates that the west couldn't be less of a bother.

It is free market competition. A lot of new startups will create anime with a lower budget. The Anime Industry is not a state run industry of Japanese Government that can limited productions and concentrate funding for select anime. As for how 20% of anime get 80% of the view, it is simply the law of Nature, The Pareto Law, 80/20 Rules. You can't fight this law of inequality.

"Imagine if we consolidated all of that talent and effort from all those lackluster shows and put them into the GOOD shows." That seems... an overly naive view of the problem. Maybe there's a reason they're so lackluster - like, maybe there is not that much talent and/or effort put in them? Sometimes too many cooks ruin the meal. You can't imagine that if a show is good just throwing MORE ANIMATORS AND DIRECTORS at it will make it incrementally better. It's more likely that it will turn the production process into a hot steaming mess.
@oo44wo937 жыл бұрын
I dont think Digi meant that in literal way. But you are right - adding to many people (especially with questionable talent) can even harm the final product.

So let me get this straight... Digibro thinks there's "too much anime" which is a bad thing because... 1) The anime industry sucks for some producers so the less people with jobs the better (???) 2) He can't watch all of it 3) Anime fans have shit taste So basically, we should have less options, less points of view, and less chances for truly original and great content to come out due to a half-hearted excuse, the creator of this video can't watch all of it to know if he should tell people his opinion on things, and because anime fans have shit taste (which ironically would be alleviated by more anime). Digibro, you're either on point or completely missing the mark with your videos. I've never seen anyone who has only golden and dog shit opinions on all things. The ending takeaway is good, but the justifications for it are paper thin.
