I always assumed the singer was talking about someone close to her, but now looking at the lyrics more analytically, it could be referring to her struggle with depression and the person she is talking about is actually her "old self" - the one that was happy and where everything was better. "Numbing the senses, I feel you slipping away" (perhaps how she abuses drugs and loses sense of who she used to be - or maybe the depression just numbs her emotions) "I died to be where you are. I tried to be where you are". (she thinks her old self is dead, and there is no hope for happiness again, so she has attempted suicide) "I dream you're still here. When I awake, you disappear... with all I hold dear" (She dreams of her old life, and when she awakes she's back to being depressed.) "Hidden companion ... promise us we were not lost from the start" (talking to her depression?) I still like to think it's about someone she loves because it's sort of more "romantic", but who knows.

A part of me really fears the day I can truly relate to this song, when someone I love and care for will cease to be. This song reminds me of the day my father passed. I was 11 at the time, and I cried my little eyes out, finding him dead. I tried to give him CPR, but he... was already gone... He... was sick... I didn't even get to say goodbye... I loved him so much. I still loved him. Every time I got him something, he called me his little nurse... I'd die to hear him say it again... I'd die to make him come back... I dream every night that he's still alive, only to wake up and be heartbroken, knowing that I'll only see him in my dreams now... Edit [4/21/2020]: It's been 4 years, give or take, since I wrote this comment. I was in 8th grade, I believe- I was still dealing with the trauma of that entire situation. Now, 4 years later, I've honestly grown numb to death. I never got proper therapy for what happened, and that's certainly messed with me. Yet... throughout everything, through depressive episodes, through suicidal thoughts... I've pushed through. I've stayed strong for the people around me. I'm now a junior. I go to a career-tech school, and although my grades haven't been the best, I'm trying my best to be able to go somewhere with my life. Quarantine's been hell, but I'm managing. I don't doubt there are people who have experienced things similar to what I have- and to all of you, stay strong. Find someone to fight for- even yourself- and push through the rough times like I know you can.

im gonna sound like a huge baby but I always think about my cat that passed away around 6-7 months ago.. he was sick, his livers were failing and we couldn't pay for his vet bills so we had to bring him to the shelter in hopes that they could afford his vet bills and he could find a good home but they killed him... One Thanksgiving in a parking lot I came across a stray Australian Shepherd, thin and exhausted. I got out of my car and called for him, blessed to find that he responded to "Buddy". I took him home, fed him, and took care of him for over a year. But he was unruly; he attacked my cats, ran away from home, tore through the neighbors' garbage and gardens, and wouldn't obey commands. I couldn't take always chasing after him, and my mother and I took him to a pound. You should have seen the betrayed look he gave us when we walked away from the cage. Days after, we were still crying. We loved him so much aside from his flaws that we decided we would try harder with him and get obedience training. We went back to the pound to adopt him back, but he wasn't there. We demanded to know where he was, and they replied that he had been adopted already. In three days time? I find that doubtful, and maybe it was just in my head, but I thought something seemed off. Still, he was a very sweet dog who loved nuzzling up to you and being your "buddy", so I could believe it. Two days later I saw in the paper that the shelter we took him to was only claiming to be "no-kill" and that they had secretly been putting dogs to sleep to cut back on costs. To this day I still don't know whether my sweet Buddy was adopted or put to sleep without being given a chance, and I have regretted giving him away every day since.

A year yesterday I lost my beautiful cat Buttons I tore my heart in two knowing he was gone it was 3 days before my birthday which hurt me even more it wasn't even like him to disappear like that I was heartbroken he was such a sweet cat loved to get cuddles and kisses he loved playtime he would always playfully attack our hands it wouldn't hurt but then he just disappeared my other cat even though she hated him and he chased her and tried to play with her she always lies where he used to lie all the time so I know inside she misses him too but we told all our neighbours put out posters look in all the bushes round my town nobody had saw him he's most likely dead he's been hit by a car before so if he was hit again he probably would just die RIP where ever you are my beautiful baby buttons :'(

I actually found this song back in 2014 maybe 2015. My grandpa had passed away and while I was so young and couldn't really understand the lyrics.. It still made me feel so emotional and I always felt better after listening to it. Fast forward a couple of years. It's late 2018. My best friend becomes my girlfriend. By the end of the summer in 2019 our toxic relationship is finally over. While in that relationship I finally understood the song and it had helped me a lot. I was in great pain. I hated myself so bad. I used to cut every part of my arm. Bite my lips till they bleed and wished I was never born. I thoughtI had no way to escape that nightmare. And here I am, in 2020. Better than I have ever been. Healthier, happier more open and honest. I still listen to this song when I'm stressed it reminds me that I'm still here and the pain I'm going through/will be going through is a part of life and will stop. I believe my grandpa would be proud of me. I know he would be proud of me

This song makes me cry, reminds me of my late uncle I lost 2 years ago. He wasn't just my uncle but also like best friend, he made me laugh when I was down, someone I turned to when I had problems with my parents. When he became terminally ill I was there till his last breath to say goodbye to him 😭 I still see him in my dreams sometimes so this song just captures the feelings i have but i don't see it as meaning suicide but rather to wanting to wish that I could go between reality and where my uncle is in a supernatural way. Might sound nuts but every time I see him in my dreams it feels like it's the only world I can still talk to him. His death changed my parents and they are trying to make up for our fractured relationship but I will always miss my uncle cuz there's no one quite like him 💔💔💔

I know this song is about the loss of someone from death, but I can't help but to think of it differently with the state of mind that I'm in. It makes me depressed, but I can't stop listening to it; it's something I can relate to, save some parts. Two months ago, my closest friend and I were forced apart, and we aren't allowed to talk anymore. Even more, I had ended up developing feelings for her; deep feelings that made me feel even more attached to her. It kills me inside, because I miss her so much, and I wish she was still here with me, and I dream about her every night. It's the only time that I really feel truly happy, because I wish I could just be with her one more time. "I'd die to be where you are..." This song hits me, and it hits me hard. I cry every time I listen to it. Something so beautiful and perfectly relatable for a lot of people, all in four and a half minutes... It's amazing, and that's all I can say about it.
