Digital Fagogo - The Samoan tuiga

The Tuiga is one of the most valued and recognisable measina of Samoa - and holds the mana of Samoan culture and often the wearer's ancestors on the tapu part of the body, the head.
In this exploration of the stories and history behind the tuiga headdress, tuiga maker and designer Bronson Seiuli shows us how the tuiga is constructed and how intricately it is placed and often woven onto the head.
For Samoan taupou's and manaia - the tuiga is the crowning glory of the cultural attire for a taualuga, or a ceremonial occasion as seen in this beautiful piece.
Digital Fāgogo is a Pacific storytelling series, looking at the ancient arts of the Moana which are brought to life through the skills of 8 different creators of Pasifika taonga.
From the tuiga of Samoa, to plaiting skills from Rotuma, the tikanga of lei making in Hawaii and the weaving of the Cook Islands - this series aims to connect young Pacific Islanders with their heritage arts and culture.

yes hes correct abt some things but i just have to say this the tuiga hair is always like close to the Taupous shoulders it should never go high like some other tuigas and the sticks on top of the haird should not be tht long but his tuiga is nice bcse like theres not much hair yet but its the other hairs i saw and the Taupou going down on her knees with the tuiga on is sa it is a sign of defeat and basically rude. I was taught these by my mother who is from Sapapali'i malietoa family and tuilaepa family and safune i Savai'i and also from Upolu my mom did not like it bcse of the meanaings and bcse of how its represented in a different way tht is rude and is unacceptable. These tuigas some people said was influenced by something else and now the tuiga is kind of losing its main purpose and main definition and tht is royalty and the strength in the Taupou and the family tuiga.

Yeaah... i think people tend to forget that the Tuiga is a crown not a headress....Back in the old days only the Tamaaali'i, Tamaa'aiga, Ali'i/Tui/Tupu and their sons and daughters, the manaia or the taupou wore these, the Masiofo/Faletua wearing Selu tuiga and the Tulafales/Tausi wearing pales. All three are different crowns but conjoined, they build the Tuiga fau.

I'm planning on making a tuiga out of my mother's hair. I just don't know the traditional way to hold the bundles of hair and the steps of maintaining it. How do I bundle the hair? How to bleach it in the sea? What to use to bind the hair?

Tufts of hair (fua) are gathered and the ends of the fua are tied into a loop (Fa’atavaitui) with either afa (coconut fibers) or fau (hibiscus fibers). Multiple fua’s are made and tied together with fau and placed into the sea attached to a pole so that the hair doesn’t float away. This would be one of the ways of the bleaching the hair or using a coral lime mixture and rubbing it in the hair and setting it out in the sun to dry until it is the desired color. Both processes required weeks to months before being completed
