That's a great seed: society vs economy. I might argue that we've gone even further and replaced economic productivity goals with financial yields.

We've converted the output of human life into %'s 1's and £'s instead of remembering that the purpose of creating those measurements was to discern impact of the quality of that life. The human-output is often seen as more important than the human-cost which is often missing from these equations.
