'Digital nomad' visas are easier to get than ever - especially if you're rich

Money can buy many things - a tasty meal, a nice car, a luxurious home.
But what about a long-term stay as a digital nomad on the beautiful Indonesian resort island of Bali? Well, for people with $130,000 to spare in their bank account, that could become a reality too.
Digital nomads are "people who choose to embrace a location-independent, technology-enabled lifestyle that allows them to travel and work remotely, anywhere in the world," according to one firm that links independent consultants with clients.
As of June 2022, more than 25 countries and territories had issued digital nomad visas to draw remote workers, whose number has increased since the pandemic started.
The Indonesian government, however, is taking a slightly different approach through a "second home visa" that permits wealthy foreigners, professionals, investors and retirees to stay in the country for up to 10 years.

As someone who's been following the new visa, I doubt there will be many takers. You can already get a visa to Indonesia as an investor without freezing 6 digits in an Indonesian bank account. Also, this visa has nothing to do with "digital nomads", so not sure why that's being pushed here other than for the hashtag.

Many countries offer digital nomad visas which are temporary, more often a year or two, and do not lead to residency and citizenship. Unless you plan to return to your home country to live, I recommend avoiding digital nomad visas and aim towards countries that offer residency and a path to citizenship.

For example, if you decide you really like a country and want to plant roots, it is best to have residency as it opens doors and opportunities within that society. However, if you prefer to be a long-term tourist without the strong connections to a particular place, then the digital nomad visa is a great deal.

What happened to the definition of a Digital Nomad, usually characterized by locating to 'various' location, tend to be volatile in their location decisions. From what I hear in this video, it is just about those leaving their country of birth (West, most dominant) and re-locating to Indonesia, while keeping a job that is possible online. 10-year visa is longer than the expat periods that my organization has (maximum terms of 5 years)

The only thing they got wrong with this digital nomad segment is that ' it's all about rich people with 100K ' not true at all. you can get 6 months digital nomad visa with possible renewal if you just have 10grand ( USD or aus can't remember ) in the bank. Not true. The six month digital nomad "visit" visa (B211A) is a 60 days visa that can be renewed twice for a total of six months. It's not a six month visa that can be renewed. The only other option is the Second Home visa, which requires proof of $140k USD. This lasts for 5 years.

This only works for freelance workers. During the pandemic we had several employees who wanted to do this. However, by doing work while in another country (even if it's online for another country), you need to pay income taxes in said country. Meaning that your employer will need to set up a separate tax administration for coworkers living and working in Indonesia to pay taxes there. Which is generally just not worth the effort.

Yes, this is the main issue with this, however, what we found, is that there are solutions in the grey area (VPN for example). In reality, for a few weeks or 1-2 months, nobody really cares, until you are not doing something illegal. And no tax officer will ask you with your laptop on the beach if you are sending private or work-related emails.

Some companies would let you do it for 3 months after that is when they'd have issues it just depends. My current company won't allow you to work anywhere they don't have an office, but they randomly do have one in Ireland. My company before this did allow people to do this. My Australian company that I work with let's their employees work somewhere else for half the year, but US tax code isn't beneficial for us. Overall I think a lot of the "nomads" in Bali that promote it are influencers which is totally different than the rest of us.

I'm not exactly sure CNBC know what exactly 'Digital nomad' really means... They are focusing on "digital" part but totally ignoring the 'nomad' part. If are staying in one country for more than a year (even 6 months is too long for me) than that can't considered "nomad" you are just working abroad. The true nomad does not buy properties and rarely stays longer than 2 months in one country mostly living in AIRBNBs or similar set-ups. The whole idea is to change locations cause you get bored doing the same things. That way you can avoid double taxation (for sure you are already taxed in your own country no matter what)

There is a peaceful country in the lap of Himalayas...Nepal. It is safe, the view is wonderful, foods are mostly fresh and organic and locally grown, Air quality is pure to breathe (expect Kathmandu may be), Internet of upto 400 mbps is accessible, people are friendly ...and overall cost of living is way cheaper (100$/ month will be more than enough to have a proper balanced diet for dinner and breakfast). And another 100-150$/ month as rent in a reasonable place to stay. If you are nomad or want to work from home, just check this place. A true heaven.

As a digital nomad based out of the USA are people considered an itinerant by the IRS or do they keep a home or apartment? Obviously keeping a home or apartment that you are never at makes it less efficient/more expensive. @@nlbqi4 Prices are driven up because rich foreigners come with favorable exchange rates and consume more goods. Store/business owners are happy because more money comes in, but consumers (majority of the population) are left with hiked up prices in goods, housing and services. Also, nomads will stay for a year or two and then leave to the next trendy beach paradise, meaning the business owners will thrive for one-two years and then face near zero demand because locals stopped living and consuming there and just go broke (happened in my hometown). Also, nomads' consumption is very different to locals, it often leads to more waste being produced and overwhelming local sanitary services. This is not to mention practices like sex tourism and hiring of cheap labor which due to the lack of regulation the local governments enforce leads to a situation nearing slavery.

In Indonesia if you deposit 130 K dollar or 2 billion rupiah..you would get interest return about 4 million rupiah or 250 dollar a month with 3% interest....4 million rupiah it's about the minimum wage of our workers...if you life in rural...there is accomodations with only 1,5 million rupiah/ 100 dollar a month ..that's include air conditioner...that's homestay called " kos - kosan"..

Over the years of traveling I’ve met lots of “ digital nomads “ at the hostels of 5-10 euros a night. Not all of them are successful, lots of them working 4-8 hours glue to their computer. Usually they go to more affordable countries none of them could live In Australia in that kind of money.the one who can you don’t find them in hostels anymore the rent a flat somewhere in the world and stay longer. Asia is very affordable to be in. when you get pay an ok salary, but even there if you want to have high standards living you’ll need to pay more. It’s very easy to live in India you can get long visa, and it’ll affordable but also price tag be accordingly. It’s like driving fiat dreaming about Ferrari

I was born in Australia and can’t afford to live here. I want to move to Thailand and many Thai people want to move here. Must be great financial incentives to immigrate here because so many working citizens are sleeping in tents now. The homelessness can’t be hidden anymore; not even in ‘well off’ suburbs. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side but I guess you can plant some wherever you go.

you can get an European digital nomad without any money only making 2k per month, the issue is that you are forced into their tax net, europe has some of the highest taxes in the world.

I'm rich yet still trying to figure out how I can live in thailand. Thai companies dont want to hire foreigners who earn well in their home country as they are considered expensive. Even if you are rich, these visas arnt worth it if you are taxed in both countries. And alot of countries dont have long term tourist visas for people who are rich and even when they do, you spend all your money on the visa than the stay itself which also males it not worth it. So even bu saying there are options for rich people, the problem is the hoops that you need to go through to get these long stays are just not worth it for the rich.

You misunderstood the law, apparently. The law is used to punish sexual abuser. You will be called by the police if and only if the girl you slept with go to police and tell the police that you are a sexual abuser ( of course she has to bring all the evidence. You are not guilty as long as it is not proven) . As long as no one goes to police, everything is fine
