Tony, what are your thoughts on using a Rawal valve for capacity control, as opposed to a digital scroll compressor?

Hi Matt thanks for the comment! My understanding of the Rawal valve is that it is very similar to hot gas bypass except uses a mix of liquid and gas. In certain applications it probably does well to prevent compressor short cycling but our typical applications have very wide swings in the building load profile so we require higher turn down and precise controllability offered by digital and variable capacity compressors.

so, is the variable speed scroll compressor is whats driven in "inverter compressors?" If so, Im curious what would be a reason for a constant high squeal during such compressor operation? (Im trying to figure out why a window AC that uses this tech ... is quiet except for a high pitched squeal around 6.3khz)

Its like comparing a handicap wheelchair with formula 1 car, Copeland is the invertor of scroll technology, it will always be better, they have a huge line-up from A/C to LBP application, digital scroll, VFD scrolls, CO2 Scrolls etc.

Hello Tony, awesome video! I have one question though and its not very technical as the video is. My question, is it recommended to leave split ac inverter type running 24/7 or do I have to switch it off everytime I leave the house? Because of my understanding if everytime I leave I have to switch it off, it kinda defeat the purpose of the inverter compressor, right? Your input is greatly appreciated!

Hi, it is better to close it off, there is no reason to waste so much energy by cooling an empty house, as for defeating the purpose it is actually not, dont forget that an inverter compressor can go well over the 60Hz meaning that when you will come back home, the compressor will run at maximum speed (maybe higher that 120Hz in some cases) to cooldown the house again and then it will coast at a lower level (15-35Hz usually).

The guy above is somewhat incorrect. How long are you leaving for? What climate do you live in? If you live in a Hot and Humid climate its much better to leave it running. After all it will only start if the thermostat or whatever controls solution being used calls for it to start, and if you are gone for a long period in excess of a few days the humidity can ruin your home via Mold and rust/corrosion of certain metals. It takes much more energy and time for a system to cool the home from a higher temperature and humidity load vs maintaining it, a system is most efficient near its set point, i.e if its supposed to maintain 75 degrees F, its best to operate it near that temperature. Realistically there is no situation in which you should turn your climate control system off unless the building is being abandoned, or left to sit in a climate where humidity and high heat load is not a factor.

Inverter compressors are driven by them selves through a powerboard, a standard compressor and be ran through VFD.
