Hey everyone! I thought I'd do a little sit down video today sharing some of my favourite tips to help improve your photography. These "mistakes" are things I used to do when I first started photography almost 15 years ago now. When I started working on my skills of each of these tips I have for you today, I saw a HUGE improvement in my work. Let me know which one is your favourite in the comments :) Also I of course have some behind the scene snippets and photos that I've never shared before from a couple of different shoots in this video too! This is the camera equipment I was using for each of those shoots in order:
First I was taking portraits of Amanda with the Sony A7R4 and Zeiss 35mm f1.4. After, Hayley and I were taking photos in the water with the Fujifilm GFX100 and manual focus Mitakon 65mm f1.4 lens - this is SUCH a magical lens!!
Finally I have 2 outfits with Aroha - first I was using both the A1 and A7III with the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 and the last shots of her sitting down are with the A1 and Zeiss 50mm f1.4.

I definitely struggle with posing / prompting non models. Using a mood board or inspiration board has been such a big help with that! Having a shot list included in the board with short prompts to jog my memory for easier transitions has been a game changer so thank you for your helpful advice! Love your videos!

Very good advice. what I would humbly add is to do not hesitate to ask the model/subject for what poses or compositions she/he would suggest. That is, it is clear the concept/plan for the session should come from the photographer, but I sense an experienced or half-way experienced model might have significant knowledge including of what angles/style of photos work better with her in the past. Do not underestimate the contribution of the model beyond freezing for the photos.

Fully agree with one lens, one prime lens. When getting my new full frame camera, I sold all my zoom lenses and went back to basics: Zeiss 55 mm 1.8. Fantastic lens with a high res sensor, amplified with DXO lens corrections and denoise. I had to learn to zoom with my feet. But I learned to know my lens and intuitively chose the right position and distance after a while. My portrait shots became so much better; the bokeh was brilliant, the lens so light with the Sony mirrorless body. I then bought a few prime lenses for travel, but today I shoot the vast majority with the “nifty fifty”. And I feel so much prouder with excellent photos with this challenge. Isn’t this what photography is all about? Joy of life?

I love hearing from people with the same experiences! I completely agree, I tend to have more fun at a portrait shoot or taking photos while travelling when I limit myself to one lens.

I agree so much with everything you said about having only one lens (a prime) at the beginning. And I also sometimes felt sick of it, but now that I have more than one, I still mainly use that same one. 50mm 💕 Maybe I should stick to only one other focal length for a while 😂 At least when possible (i.e. not at weddings). I bet it would give me a lot more knowledge and better handling when it comes to choosing when I will use each

@DanielRodriguez-fg5ll

Hi Julia. I am new to photography and your channel helps me a great deal of understanding what I want for my photography. Your opinions and videos of 35mm lens made me decided to buy my first prime len with 35mm lens. I got the sony a7iv kit set but have been shooting mainly with the 35mm lens for the one len challenge. I find myself to become more creative to try to shoot things differently with a fixed focal length. Explore different angles of the same subject. There’s a lot to learn and have fun with. I still got the kit lens to play with. Your videos are informative as you provide real world usage, how you progress and get better at photography. I am glad I found your channel.

Julia, you made a statement in this tip segment that I find true in so many people in the arts. Most of us are introverts. I am a musician and play the french horn and I am also a photographer. It has been through the musical journey that I have somewhat come out of my shell and have put forth an effort to get to know people and interact with them. I still find it awkward doing the same thing with my photography. I enjoy your youtube videos and have gained some insight into what I need to correct in my photographs. Thanks Julia for everything love you 😽💞💞

Open aperture for shallow depth of field (lower f numbers like f1.4) and fast shutter speeds. Use auto iso and set it to to a minimal shutter speed of for example 1/500s. For track sharp pictures also use a camera with fast and precise eye af (for example Sony A7III, A7IV, A9, A9II, A1, A7r7III, A7rIV) and switch on image stabilization. Set it also to af-c and eye af. Also use a quickly focusing lens such as the 50mm 1.2 GM or the 135mm 1.8 GM.

Always have your shutter speed double the frame rate! For example: 24fps - 1/50 shutter. This will keep your motion blur authentic and smooth. So basically if your image is overexposed using this rule, then use a filter! If you have any questions I have some videos on my channel that might help you out! :)
