I finished Shenmue 2 this week and went straight into the Shenmue 3 Demo. Overall it’s a pretty seamless transition, outside of the changes noted in the video. In fact I was impressed by how much more some of the content in the demo makes sense given the clues put in place at the end of Shenmue 2. At first I found the herb collecting to be an odd addition, but it’s very much a part of the story at the end of the last game with Shenhua collecting and talking about herbs for her father. Overall I’d say this is looking to be as good as we could ever expect in that it’s keeping true to its roots and not presenting a new concept trading off an old name.

It's in that tough spot of "if you modernise it too much then you lose everything that made it what it was." Given how much time has passed, it's in that awkward spot of damned if you do, damned if you don't. But being a Shenmue fan, I've got to say, I'm impressed they managed to capture the essence while modernising it just enough where it needed to be without losing what makes Shenmue beloved by its fanbase. I don't know how it will go for a mainstream audience, but speaking as a fan? It's everything I could want it to be...I'm hugely impressed by that demo. I've gone back and played it many times this week and have loved revisiting it every single time. Screw the haters, this will be the game I will play in November non stop.

@@danmann861 💯I respect that Yu Suzuki went for the approach of making this a Shenmue game first. We have too many examples across games now where the developer chases the bigger audience at the cost of its core and when that fails it pleases no one. Least we not forget the Diablo mobile announcement. I'm sure there's a world in which there's a perfect marrying between the core experience of Shenmue and something which appeals to a much greater audience, but finding that right execution is both expensive and tough to do, from what we've seen of Shenmue 3 so far it looks to me like the needle has at least moved in the right direction. Perhaps Shenmue 4 will find a way to push it further thanks to building on top of this tech.

i honestly would have loved if sega helped as the publisher and such, imagine the yakuza team helping make the game under the creators guidance, man i think that would have been epic, def hope that happens for the next entry
@roskelld
@roskelld 5 жыл бұрын
@@melxb You raise a good point. One thing I did note that was missing from the demo was SEGA. The capsule toys and lack of SEGA in the world does leave a void, no more Virtua Fighter toys, no more arcade cabinets to discover (not SEGA ones at least I guess). It would have been great to have more of their support on this, both in license and like you said, maybe help from their team's skillsets, especially the Yakuza team. Maybe even access to the Virtua Fighter 5 code base to work their combat from. SEGA feel like a confused company these days, not as backward as say Konami, but it feels like for every good move they make, there's always a number of missed moments upon which they could capitalize on.

@@roskelld exactly 100%...but fanboys will as usual crucify me, least they did when i mentioned this on earlier footage before and they came in trashing yakuza as well smh...i dont get how anyone can hate/be critical on yakuza, but love shenmue with all its faults and call them oh that's part of the games charm, yet ignore the same for yakuza while technically being the same, but more polished lol...plus not like i said without the creator at the helm...i mean i get nostalgia and all, but come on esp in new entry and for new gamers it will feel dated/budget, what's wrong with the attention to detail/lore the yakzua devs put into their games and with the creators direction if anything could really push the genre to new heights...i think it would end up deeper, more chinese lore/things to see and interact with...plus the characters would be that much more expressive and animated, would just add to the immersion and atmosphere...with all that said hats of to what they/creator did with 3 with the budget/team and all, hopefully it sells and succeeds where he does get greater support and budget going forward, esp seeing how the next entries will inevitably fall on next gen platforms, demanding more or least peoples expectations of games will have risen more

Fantastic video and very in-depth! I've played the demo a number of times now (probably too many), and I find it incredible how Yu and his team have managed to capture the overall feeling and essence of Shenmue. The attention to detail returns and remains fascinating. It really does make me question why current gen open world games think that going bigger is better. Everything I personally wanted has been met (and exceeded) in the demo and I hope that new old & new fans of the series will enjoy it too! 46 days to go!!

SheepheadCG still looks like a AA game tbh. It’s easier to keep gameplay more focused with loads of distractions with a smaller open world. With a bigger open world it’s more about exploration and a sense of wonderment. It’s a strange craving that can’t be satisfied with smaller worlds.

I never played that much Shenmue, but I'm pretty impressed by how closely they seem to have captured the feel (awkwardness, jank, and all) of the original games. This really feels like a graphical update and fitting continuation of the series. Strangely enough, I think the limited resources and relative lack of polish actually may have helped maintain that trademark Shenmue weirdness. If the game had leaned too hard into more accepted, modern game conventions, I don't think it would work as well as a direct sequel to a nearly 20 year old game.

I'd slightly disagree on the combat being mashy. The higher level monks (White Tiger and Gold Tiger) actually punish you for mindlessly mashing I've found. I mean sure, it's not the Virtua Fighter engine, but I found the combat to be rather solid in the demo. Not the greatest fighting system I've played but has a surprising bit of tact to it. Anways, the rest of the demo is damn impressive. I'm impressed they've managed to pull it off on such a modest budget. Thanks for the vid, John...and I look forward to the final analysis next month on launch :) Very keen to see how the PS4 version runs after seeing the buttery smooth PC version in action.

To be honest, it seems pretty much like a love letter to the fans of the series. I am super happy of everything at display here, to be honest it wouldn't be right without awkward dialogue either! xD However, I'm worried that the game will continue to have a really niche audience of old people (like myself. xD). @Sifer2 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel the same. It's great they are going for so much fan service here. Even throwing in forklifts to some backwoods village just for nostalgia. But if the game is too authentically janky I worry it will turn off new players, and not sell very well. Which wouldn't be a problem if this was going to end the story but it isn't. Dunno if I can handle another 20 year wait lol.

@@Sifer2 yeah definitely. One thing that strikes me is how many different systems they have been able to create with UE4 to make the "shenmue"-experience come alive again. Perhaps it will be easier to justify the next installment?

This isn't going to appeal to a wider audience at all if it's as janky and awkward as the prequels, and this is coming from someone who loved them. I feel like if Sega had made a Dreamcast 2 or Dreamcast HD in the 7th gen, this is what it would’ve looked like (and I don’t mean that in a bad way). It’s definitely got that unmistakeable AM2-ness about it, in addition to the visual charm (“blue skies”) of Dreamcast-era Sega titles. Sure seems like a great exception to the saying, “they don’t make ‘em like they used to.” Clearly they still can when motivated to do so. Something that I think would also be really great is if Sega saw what’s happened here and gave other iconic Saturn & Dreamcast series similar new installments (ergo a new Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon (maybe if the Switch remake sells well?), or things based on the universes of Skies of Arcadia, NiGHTS, Burning Rangers). They still have so much really good stuff to pull from that hasn’t been revisited beyond at best an occasional re-release. Shenmue III should easily prove that people still want new installments just as much as the Sega AGES poll from 2018 showed that people also want remakes.

It's gonna be so worth playing :) There has been a massive amount of work put into it since inception to the point it's hardly recognizable from what we first saw. I can't wait to step back into that world. It felt so alive and dynamic when I was younger it felt like if I didn't play the Shenmue world was just going to stop..

Great video and fair comments throughout. I'd disagree about the fighting as I find if you button mash against the higher opponents you get killed. Considering the budget, the way the game looks is stunning and the amount of depth that will be in this game will make some AAA titles look like lifeless junk.

Wow, this looks so much better than I could ever imagine based on the previous trailers and demos. It remarkable how long they have come with the graphical fidelity and presentation since the 2017 Gamescom demo. Really looking forward to playing, this demo basically convinced me of a pre-order even I'm not a huge fan of the original games.

Anyone else find the skin and eyes in the Shenmue III demo a little... dead? Like, their skin was flush with life and colour in Shenmue II, but now its...super pale and the eyes are lifeless a little. Shenmue II had vivid eye colour, it was stunning really. Now their eyes are extremely dark and skin is almost a sickly pale. Just my 2 pence. I look forward to comtinuing Shenmue!

Those models on that Passport disc in Shenmue 1 were beyond amazing, and still are and that's a fact and that was made in fricking 1997-1998 insane man. Its also to this day still the only game I have ever played where it snows, then as days go on snow disappears, its also the only game I have ever played at least in Shenmue 1 and 2 where the more you practice moves not only do they get stronger but as they level up even the animation looks different and improves which is insane.....Details like that are why Shenmue 1 and 2 will hold up in any era and always be special masterpieces.

Running Bear I’d believe you were it not for the small detail that 2018’s Shenmue 1&2 Remaster came out on Xbox One. Such a weird choice to rerelease the previous games on a console that’s not planned to have the new one, right? It’s a reverse Kingdom Hearts 3 situation for XB1 players here where all they got was KH3 but not the Remasters. So weird.

@@AlexRN Releasing Shenmue I&II on Xbox was SEGA'S choice, to just make as much money as possible. Shenmue III is in a different situation, it has a different publisher and Sony has put a lot of money into advertising and distribution for the PS4. I wouldn't count on an Xbox release but certainly don't completely rule it out. I, myself would lean on it never coming out on the Xbox unfortunately but it would be great if it did

I said the same thing about the Xbox version not releasing at the same time as ps4. I hate when game publishers make multiplat games exclusive its very anti consumer and really alienates your game from previous fans and new audiences. Its makes no business sense at all.

I was a backer of this game but I didn't expect much from it because, you know, it's an indie game and it's 20 years already, not to mention how horrible the models in the 2015 & 2017 trailers were... (I requested a refund when I knew it was Epic-exclusive but that was another story. Just want to say I totally understand that the devs needed funding, so I have nothing against them) Anyway I was really really surprised at the quality of the game. It feels EXACTLY like the old Shenmue we loved. Think about it. To make a proper modern sequel on a tight budget to a 20-year-old masterpiece that almost bankrupted a major game company is no small feat, and Yu-san actually delivered that. Bravo!
